This review is for Michelle. I was on a quest to find a new stylist as the last cut I got left me looking like my 2 year old took a pair of shears to my head. I found amazing reviews on Michelle and reached out. We had a FaceTime call first (she was going out of town) so she could see what needed to be fixed and I was able to hear what her plan would be to correct it. I loved it! I was on board and booked my appointment with her. The day of I sat in her chair and she proceeds to put her hands through my hair ... "ohhh yeahhhhh". We talked about the plan, she told me the steps she was going to do and proceeded to gingerly cut away. I also got a shampoo and blow-dry with my haircut. Loved that nice touch on massage! She left me looking 10/10 when she was done! She was so gracious telling me if there is something that needed to be fixed to let her know and she'd do what she could to get me in. I did make one quick trip back but that was not to her fault. We knew that we were going to have to do a grow out to really correct the issue since we are trying to save some length. I am that girl that either doesn't brush her hair in the morning (true story) and just makes sure it's laying nice by running some pomade over flyaways because I do not like using heat! OR I take 5 minutes and use that round brush blowdryer (get you one! so fast!) and the picture I posted was that day. I'm very happy with the results. She had alot to fix and she delivered! Coincidentally my aunt went to another butcher, I mean barber, I mean stylist and was in the same situation. I immediately sent her Michelle's info and she booked an appt. Michelle is an absolute gift! I cannot recommend her enough. I'm one of those people who essentially ignored their hair for a long time because I have no idea how to try something new or maintain it. I have to say... Michelle is most officially my go-to hair stylist. I love how well she listens to all of my ideas and manages to give me the best hair results. I'm beyond happy with her cuts, and now I'm really happy with her color as well!! I wanted to lift my hair color before the summer, but I was so scared of burning my hair. The truth is, every other hair stylist I've been to always complains because I use cheap dye for my roots and they have a hard time lifting my color. So, they use a strong developer and fry my hair. Not Michelle. She had me come in to give her a hair sample, just so she could experiment with it. I came in, and she ended up doing a sort of balayage. She used a mild developer, so my hair is still healthy, and she manage to lift the color a lot more than I expected!! We have a set plan for future visits, and I have to say.... I've never felt more confident in a hair stylist and in my hair. My hair has gotten so healthy since I've first seen her--given, a good portion of that is also self-care. But she always has all of the suggestions, and she doesn't just go to the most expensive products. She really tries hard to find affordable products that work. This review is long overdue! I went to the Local Salon for the first time to get a cut right before the lockdown happened and I'm so glad I did. My stylist was Amy Edwards and boy oh boy, let me just tell you what an absolute GODDESS she is. I'm a bit of a salon hopper (sorry!) but mostly because I've never found a stylist who's made me really want to go back. I found that in Amy. At the start of my appointment, Amy sat down with me and actually LISTENED to what I wanted, what I disliked about my hair (naturally frizzy and poofy, no shape to it), and analyzed it to give me the best tips and products to use for MY hair. So often, I've had stylists suggest products that I'm sure typically work for the average person but I've never found a product that helped me until now. I went in asking for a fringe-y shag that would make me look and feel like a rockstar and Amy completely delivered! I literally left the salon with the best haircut I've ever had in my life. I purchased the Davines curl building serum off of Amy's recommendation and it is my HOLY GRAIL. I use it every single day and it actually gets rid of my frizz and lets my natural waves shine (and my natural hair actually looks great! Who would've known?) I used to straighten my hair every day but I haven't even touched any heating tools since I got my cut (in february). My hair has never looked or felt better and healthier. (Pics posted!) Not only is Amy incredibly talented, she was just so fun and easy to talk to. I love this salon! And I love having Sarah as my hair stylist! I am a curly/natural hair girl, and have struggled my entire life to find someone who knows how to cut my hair. I had many hair cuts where the stylist would straighten my hair, then cut. Once washing, the hair cut didn't transfer to my curly hair AT ALL! Update May 2019: I have been seeing Kayleigh for almost 5 years now, so felt it was about time to update my review! I don't feel like I'm exaggerating in saying Kayleigh is one of the best hair stylists in LA! She is very knowledgeable about hair, and always takes the time to talk with you and give recommendations based off of what you are looking for. I went into The Local Salon with a half-styled, incomplete haircut and an ugly corn-yellow hair color (which was from a year's worth of bleaching). I tried out another salon in downtown LA and recieved a horrible haircut, which led me back to The Local Salon. I have always had great experiences, whenver I got my hair styled at this salon and never had any conplaints. Today, I tried out a new stylist named Ritchie and he surpassed all of my expectations going in!! I asked him to correct my hairstyle, as well as complete the color process and dye my hair iceburg blue. I've never done such a drastic color change before, especially with such a bright, vibrant color. But, he showed me each step and explained how the color would initially take effect. He also gave me some helpful tips to keep the color in my hair longer. The whole process took about 5 hours; but, all I can say is, the wait was completely worth it!! Between moving cross country, a lot of pool swimming this summer, and a crazy work schedule - I had not had time to handle the faded, tired mop on top of my head. She had my reference pictures all ready to go and talked with me about what she thought would work and what she thought would not work. She was very friendly and I enjoyed chatting with her while she was working. She also took a lot of time to explain how she was cutting and how it would change/impact the way that I style my own hair. She also told me about a few new products I am going to be trying out as soon as I can get my hands on them. I went to Sara for a deva cut and i love it so SO MUCH. I went in with a picture of what I had in mind and we discussed it and what i walked away with was so much better than what i had in my head. She even showed me a different way to "dry" my hair (microfiber towels y'all). She even recommended another stylist in her salon for "fantasy" colors (purples and blues). I have been to this salon three times and not once has my appointment been taken on time, even when I had the first appointment of the day. They always give you the same line about how "you're welcome to go down the street for coffee or juice while you wait." It's obvious they're used to doing to this to people. The parking is metered only, so this is super annoying. At my last salon, they would literally go out to the meter and refill it for you when you were doing a long process (if my stylist hadn't relocated to NYC, I would have stayed there forever). The first guy who cut my hair spent the whole time getting his scissors stuck in a hoop earring on a new piercing, to the point that it was throbbing when I left. I have 8 piercings in my ears and this has never happened. Even though the cut was good, I changed stylists. Next: I'm a woman with short hair. I've had two visits with the new stylist, and both times she made comments about gender, saying something "masculine" or "hyper androgynous" would suit me. And she's only ever used male references to describe what my look should be. It feels really weird to have a stranger tell you that you're androgynous or masculine or feminine. Not ask you if that's your style, but just assume that short hair = masculine woman. On top of that, she gave me the literal worst haircut I have ever had. After she cut my hair pixie short (ie would dry in 5 minutes under a blow dryer), this stylist sat me in a dryer chair for almost 30 minutes. She claimed that this was to "add texture" to my straight hair, which makes no sense to me and had zero effect at all. Plus, the entire time I'm stuck under this dryer, I can see her taking another client, which makes me think the style thing was BS and that she just double-booked herself. Plus, the whole time, I'm constantly watching the clock because I'm at a meter. I eventually just took the dryer off my own head because it was burning hot and tried to get someone's attention so I could let them know this was weird. When she finally got me in the chair again she apologized for "the extra few minutes" and blamed me, saying she "didn't think my hair would take so long to dry." Excuse me, I JUST WATCHED YOU cut someone else's hair! On top of a weird experience, this haircut is hideous. My friends have all commented on how bad it is and literally every time I catch my reflection I cringe. It doesn't style well, it sticks out in weird place, and is growing out worse instead of better. The bangs are choppy and do this weird upward dip in the middle so it looks like I did them myself. I'm all for an edgy look and am not afraid to try new things, but I have never been so self conscious in a haircut. My elementary students have even commented on how bad it is. I would come in for a fix, but I honestly don't want anyone in this salon touching my hair again. To be fair, I started here because a friend told me she loved this place and this stylist. I don't know what the discrepancy is--maybe she's not comfortable with short hair, maybe she can't get out from behind this weird image she has of me as a super masculine woman???
