I love Japan and I've been crafting with fabrics lately so it seemed logical I should stop in at SuperBuzzy, having only been in one time before, years ago. I was really delighted with all the fabric options and very happy that the majority of them seemed to be 100% cotton (as this is what I need for my projects!) They had lots of cute prints, whimsical prints and also serious/dramatic prints. I was a bit surprised they had no fancy, silky kimono fabric and nothing with realistic cranes (just one print of origami cranes... ?) The staff was very helpful while I was there and went out of their way to make sure every customer was greeted upon entering and also offered assistance directly as they shopped. This was helpful for me since I had questions but felt shy about approaching someone to ask them. Mostly this store sells fabric, and they have a heavy focus on quilting, but they also have some novelty things from Japan like cute erasers, Re-Ment figures, and similar. The prices were very reasonable - comparable to US fabric stores with perhaps less items on sale. I bought mostly sale fabrics and some novelty goods. I showed my creations to a Japanese pen-pal who lives in Japan and she didn't think the fabrics seemed "Japanese" to her but she's not one to frequent fabric stores and the way I see it, this store sells fabrics made in and/or for Japan. So while some of the traditional fabrics do look very "Japanese", largely you are buying cute, classic, or stylish fabrics *from* Japan. It's a subtle difference and one I am totally fine with. I very much expect to return now that I have a need for more fabric! read more

Moving to Ventura from LA led me to assume that there would be no good fabric stores within 60 miles of the downtown fabric mecca. I was wrong. Superbuzzy is down the street from me and it has next to ZERO synthetic fabrics. Most are high quality Japanese cottons and linens. I made several pillows from their fantastic fabric and am super happy. Will return. read more

Superbuzzy is the fabric store of my dreams!!! I live in Orange County but came up to Ventura last Saturday to visit some family. I am so happy I stopped by! The entire fabric collection is beautiful (and I mean entire), they carry patterns, kits and other goodies from indie designers that I love, and there are amazing quilt and apparel samples hanging around the store. There's also a couch near the front, which my husband really appreciated while I took my time looking around. The prices are very reasonable for the quality, and the staff is super friendly. I cannot say enough wonderful things about superbuzzy. My mom has been sewing masks and pillows after she recently retired. The kind woman, Chantelle, at superbuzzy has been incredibly kind and patient giving her advice on all of her project goals. Her patience and kindness makes these project feel doable, instead of intimidating. Also the incredible patterns superbuzzy offers are unique and beautiful. Their website makes shopping easy and safe during the pandemic. When I had a question about a certain material Chantelle was kind enough to go find it, pull it out and describe it to me over the phone. She also picked out zipper and thread to go with it. Although I'm not a quilter, I love this store. There are fabrics you'll want for apparel, quilting, and home decorating. The quality of the fabrics is head and shoulders above the big box stores. From the fiber content (mostly cotton) to the saturated colors, to the interesting colors, themes and prints, it's doubtful a sewer could come in and NOT buy something. In my two short visits I noticed batiks, juvenile fabrics, solids, coastal, whimsical, to name a few, in just about every color you could want. They also have a small selection of yarn, thread, patterns etc. The staff are very helpful and friendly. You can sign up for their email for notifications of events and sales. First learned of this place from my younger sister who was looking for Japanese fabrics online at the time. Kelly the owner is totally sweet and she offers a great selection of Japanese fabrics, sewing/fabric craft notions, Japanese craft books and other fun stuff. If you haven't yet been introduced to this world, this is a good place to start. Japanese fabrics are beautiful and beautifully made. Also, you are in for one pleasant experience if you've never seen Japanese craft books. The layouts, styling, photos and everything about these books is so different from anything you'll find being published here in the states. You can check out their website where they feature inventory and also sale items. In the past they have operated out of a warehouse and I have been lucky enough to visit her by appt a handful of times to purchase items in person. One time I went with my sister who brought my 4 year old niece. Kelly's daughter and her played together while we shopped, how cool is that? They are now going to open up a retail shop sometime in November 2011 (a different location than this but also in Ventura). It's exciting to see a small business continue growing especially in these economic times. Make a day of it and be sure to visit downtown Ventura while you are out this way where there are some cute restaurants and bars or stop off at the outlets in Camarillo if you've got the funds. read more

Superbuzzy has some of the cutest fabrics and craft materials ever! I'm new to sewing and wanted to pick up some materials to make a tote bag. Enter Superbuzzy. Their store is stocked with funky patterned and rainbow bright colored fabric and crafting supplies. Definitely something for everyone! The owner of the store was very kind and gave me a few tips on tote construction. Besides sewing and crafting supplies they have some pretty cute items that would make great gifts. According to their website, they offer a couple different crafting classes and even have private sewing lessons (might have to check that out!) Fabric-wise: 5 stars. Service-wise: 2 Generous compromise: 3 Caveat: the fabrics at Superbuzzy are all of a similar material and come in a large variety of unbelievably adorable and chic patterns. They were mostly a lightweight cotton-type material and some fleece as well. So, if you need something waterproof or velvet or silk, this is not the place for you. That being said, they come right on their website as being purveyors of modern and unique Japanese fabrics and that they certainly are. Walking down row after row of bolts, I could have spent hours (and hundreds of dollars) on these designs. This is no crappy Jo-Ann type store with cloying puppy and X-Mas tree patterns, nay these are truly chic and one of a kind. Delicate gold constellations on teal, gray and white whales on light gray. Totally gorgeous. And yet, I didn't buy a single thing. After having driven down from Santa Barbara to check it out. Because no one would help me. Welp. I even brought two bolts up to the cutting area intending to get two yards.... The woman working there was busy chatting with some other customer and after waiting for fifteen minutes (with no acknowledgment from the staff) I got bored. And irritated. Also, they really lack in the patterns department and seemingly all the sewing books they sell are in Japanese. And there are no price tags on the fabric. Not so helpful. Would I come back? Certainly, if I had something specific in mind and oodles of time. But the service disappointed in what would otherwise have been a five star review. read more

Wow! This is such a special place! There are so many cute, cotton prints here that is difficult to choose just one. The prices are a bit high for me, but I know that it costs a little extra to have such a special store here in Ventura. Best quilting fabric store on the planet, period. They have a huge range of Kona solids, probably all the colors available. I've even purchased fabric for a garment I made for myself. Great deals, standard pricing is very reasonable, and they also have a really cool customer appreciation program that gets you a huge discount on the reg. Also, you can peruse the store online and pick up in-store. What more could you want? Ventura desperately needs to support small businesses to give this town a little flavor. If you like vintage textiles and unusual mid century or retro prints, this is the place for you! My sister-in-law took me to Superbuzzy for the first time and I almost exploded from the amount of amazing fabric this place has. I was literally like, "LOOK AT THIS ONE!" every 30 seconds. This is THE fabric store. Don't even waste your time going to those chains where you maybe see one good fabric pattern - if you're lucky. The only problem with this place is you will want EVERY fabric. The hardest thing in the world is choosing one or two. Also - this place is STOCKED. It's not like there are a couple racks of cute fabrics. This whole store is racks and racks of amazing prints. If you're in the market for patterns, however, they have just a very small handful and it seemed like maybe mostly for kids and maybe a couple for adults. So get your patterns elsewhere and come here for your fabric. And if you're not in the Ventura area, they have a great website where you can order their fabric. read more

There are mounds of wonderful things I can say about Superbuzzy, but not enough time or space to do it! Let's start with the location: in midtown, nice & quiet, and great for a quick walk with my daughter when I need sewing supplies. The quality of the fabric sold at this store is unmatched anywhere else. The prices are higher than Joann's or Fabrictown, but a lot of the brands are Japan imports or top name brands that you can't find at other stores. The store's aesthetic is so charming and calm, I always lose track of time while shopping here & it's easy to leave with more fabric than necessary for your project! I love the shopper appreciation program! For every $250 I spend I get a $25 gift card back - a great way to keep the shoppers (aka: addicts) coming back! There are craft classes occasionally offered here and you can also buy fabric from the store on their website (something I plan to do after my family moves this summer!) Kelly & staff are super nice and this is why I keep coming back: The grumpy old ladies at Fabrictown and the unknowledgeable staff at Joann's have left me wanting more out of a fabric store. We traveled up from Orange County for some specialty fabrics my wife needed for a project, not really sure what to expect. Superbuzzy was a great surprise. Terrific selection and customer service - a fun experience. For the items she bought they showed more care in cutting fabric correctly (didn't know there was a wrong way) - and explained why it was important. With items you don't normally see in this kind of shop, it's really unique. The owner has gone to Japan to source some of the lines. Shop was cool also - an old retail building repurposed, loved that. As a guy I'm not so much sharp on fabrics, but this business very much impressed me. My wife can't wait to return. read more
