I am a local and I love this store. I don't rely on it for art, craft or sewing supplies, which can be found for less elsewhere, although it's good in a real pinch, but this is the best gift store around. They have Kazoos and silly putty, amazing tiaras, swoon-worthy decorative papers and gorgeous gift wrap. They always have nice and affordable jewelry, great hats, and usually a gorgeous garment or two for women. Whoever buys for this store has a great eye. Today while shopping for her birthday my 3 year old wasn't allowed to use the restroom because of "covid" in this store. Totally ludicrous like it somehow spreads in the restroom more than the rest of the store. She was crying and needed to go badly. I am very disappointed with this cruel treatment and won't ever be back. We had enjoyed this store prior and had brought guests each time they came to visit us. We are new to town and completely surprised by this treatment. read more

This is a nice little store with a good variety of high quality craft items. I always like to stop in here during Christmas time to browse their lovely selection of tree ornaments. They always have nice displays out for the holidays and the staff has been helpful and friendly to me. The only downside is that the store is small in size compared to the big craft stores in Ventura or Oxnard. That said, they provide a good variety of products here and make decent use of their space. I think they're a little high on prices, but when they have what I need without having to drive another 35-45 minutes, it's worth spending an extra buck or two. read more

Being that I worked at Ben Franklin 14 years ago , I might be a bit biased, but always fair. If you enjoy small town shopping with an old fashioned vibe this store is for you. Cindy the owner has done a bit of reinventing in the years following my employment, as she brought in decor from Bali, jewelry, and Much, much more. In the long run Ben Franklin at heart is a five & dime store except its got elevated Ojai prices, through the years it was our regular customers that kept the stores heartbeat thumping, along with the loyal staff that have been there for many years. The most popular items you ask? Anything in one of the sale fliers... But you better get there quick , small store, small stock room. Ben Franklin has been a parents go to place when school projects come up, a holiday lovers dream when it comes to decor, a homeowner/apartment dwellers dream when it comes to housewares, a kids dream when it comes to toys, and a crafters or sewers dream for fabric, beading, acrylic paints, canvases, and who knows what else... One week ago I witnessed, first hand, a random act of kindness. I had taken an out- of- town friend to do errands. We stopped at Ben Franklin, a locally owned store, for a birthday card. She is a senior citizen and uses either a walker or a cane. I went in to fetch a cart, and this nice young employee greeted me at the door after noticing that my friend needed a cart to lean on. We wandered around the beautifully curated store after my friend commented on the variety of merchandise from the practical to lovely kitchen linens, to yardage to gift items. As we checked out, that same employee helped my friend through the checkout with the cart, held the door until we got to our car, and waited at the other door as I returned the cart. This incident speaks volumes about his customer service training by the owner and his interpersonal instincts. This is the reason that I always shop locally. read more

If you're looking for craft supplies in Ojai, this is the place... the only place. Their selection is a bit limited, but that's just because they don't have the space of the big chain craft stores. The great thing is, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, so even if you don't see exactly what you came in for, if you ask someone, they can direct you to something they do have in stock that will work for your project. There is a clerk/cashier at the Ben Franklin store in Ojai, CA that went far beyond the call of duty. Her name is Kathleen and she helped me put a couple of picture frames together. They had complicated instructions and she took the time to put 2 of these frames together for me. Besides this, she has always been very friendly, kind, helpful, and enthusiastic about my projects. The cashier today (7/27) at 4:30pm left a foul taste in my mouth. She needs a lesson on customer service. I brought in a couple paints I needed to match for a craft project and asked her if she could point me in the right direction. She didn't greet me or ask if she could help instead she sighed and in a bitchy tone said she didn't know and that I needed to ask the woman in fabrics(who was lovely by the way). Unfortunately they didn't have the brand or the colors I needed. On my way out she accused me of stealing the paints I had previously shown her that were mine!
