There is a lot of everything for any artist of all shapes and form. You will find lots for mixed media too and it could definitely take me 3 seconds for inspiration! If you're feeling down in the dumps from being stagnant... visit here and you won't be disappointed! Now the staff we encountered are probably the most perfect staff members for a place like Art From Scrap. They were so friendly and I felt at home amongst what some would call junk! So, considering that I found more treasures than your average typical artists... then the staff would be considered diamonds amongst the rough. Prices were well within my starving artist budget and I can say that the value of what was sold has me dreaming of returning everyday! They prepared a craft that was fun and accessible for both of my young girls, and most importantly they were truly INCREDIBLE guides-- patient, helpful, calm, and receptive. I've worked with young children professionally for over 15 years and was honestly stunned by their presence as facilitators. Despite what the signs in the store say, most of the store is not bulk items. This store used to have tons of bulk items. I would bring kids in with me and just tell them to fill a bucket or two but now so many items are individually priced that it adds up quickly and I can't do that anymore. This is quite an unusual business and the name says it all, "Art from Scrap." Basically, the store sells what most people would throw away in their daily lives, some may refer to it as junk. Items change all the time. On my last visit, there were large bins of wine bottle corks and art history slides, disregarded trophies, scraps of material, etc. I purchased a couple things - sample tiles. Totally cool. I like the fact that they are selling 100% recycled merchandise, so if you purchase anything there, you are also recycling and helping the environment, sort of. The employees are always pleasant and helpful if you have any questions. It is definitely a great place to purchase raw materials for an art project. The prices are reasonable, too. read more

I have used brass I found there in my jewelry and driftwood pieces I found there in a sculpture I created! And I can't say enough about how friendly and loving their staff are! This is a GREAT Shop. What this shop does is to present an eclectic mix of all kinds of things and make them available to the customers to use in their creative art projects or whatever... I would not do this store justice if I were to list what they make available, as I am sure it will be totally different tomorrow or next week. What I will say is, if you want to find inspiration for your next mixed media art project and then find some of the objects to create it with, this is the place to go. Or, just come in to walk around and see what they have... That too is also fun. You never know what you will find. Art From Scrap is located just a few blocks south of State St., which is the main street for retail and dining in Santa Barbara. So, you can walk to it or, of course, make the drive. Prices are kind of out of whack. I got some used glue and tape once thinking pricing would reflect it was a used product but when I checked out wasn't much cheaper than if I had bought it new. Recently saw some clay and glazes and prices were about same if were bought at Art Essentials. Maybe that's why product isn't moving and is getting boring. If your inventory is free maybe prices could be a little more reasonable as your profit on what you sell is 100%. I've poked around Art From Scrap for years and in the past I feel pricing was more reasonable. read more

I love Art From Scrap! I recently moved away from Santa Barbara and have yet to find anything nearly as good in my new (big) city. Art From Scrap is truly one-of-a-kind. I have wonderful memories of patronizing this business when they were located in an old hangar near the Santa Barbara Airport. The venue was as funky and cool as the vibe in general. As a kid, I made several art masterpieces with recycled goods from this place. It's a total treasure trove. Recycling and sustainability are the keywords here. The items have been gently used and are repurposed brilliantly. I've utilized their skateboard wheel shavings on more than one occasion. The variety of merchandise is vast and there is most definitely something for every project. The current location is in downtown Santa Barbara near the Garden Street freeway exit. While not as funky as the prior location, it's certainly spacious and still offers the same great selection of merch. The private parking lot is pretty limited but there is almost always street spaces within a half block radius. The next time you're in need of a fun element to add to your art project, give this place a visit. read more

This place is awesome. I went today for my first time looking for fabric to make advent calendars for Christmas. This is literally the only fabric store in Santa Barbara and I am so sad I only just learned about it! I was previously making all our Halloween costumes out of thrifted sheets and felt from Michael's. Anyway, I was surprised by the amount and variety of fabric and was able to snag roughly 2 yards of fleece, 2 yards of patterned cotton, and 2 yards of linen for $8. I didn't really explore all the other things they had but I did notice they have scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, ribbon, yarn, jewelry, and cards. The staff is really helpful and can help you find anything you need. There are only 2 bad things about this place. 1. The parking. They have about 4 spots in their lot and street parking was pretty difficult to find, so just give yourself time to find parking. 2. Store hours. Look them up before you go because the store is only open on certain days of the week. We will definitely be back! read more

Every time I go to SB, I hope it is a day that Art from Scrap is open! They have the most magnificent junk and treasures, which is perfect for stretching your imagination to repurpose into whatever you need. As an elementary art teacher, I very much enjoy the bulk bins. I bring my students materials and see what kind of awesome things they'll make. The workshops and classes are a hidden gem, my favorite was the printmaking class where I learned to carve a stamp. The new manager is the worst. She doesn't honor the bulk bucket and overcharges for many things for example 5 dollars for a small (empty) gift box. The store used to be wonderful with unique treasures at great prices. NOT anymore since nasty Nicole has arrived. She ruined a special store and it's too bad. read more

Need cardboard, paper, or fabric? The've got that. How 'bout glass jars, old frames, canvases, or colored beads? Yep. They'll have those, too, along with bits and bobs of old toys, holiday ornaments, jewelry, and other crafty supplies. It's a new adventure, each and every visit. Today's score? A brand-new pair of turquoise sandals. As usual, super random, but super cute! Sadly, they are closed Mon-Wed, and their hours are short: 11-6 Th-F, and 10-4 Sat-Sun, which means it's difficult for me to get in very often around my work schedule. But, I just love it there, and the staff always makes it worth my while to find time to come in, pointing out new things in the shop, showing me their newest creations, and helping me find whatever it is I need for a steal. read more

Tara and staff are so helpful and nice! I love looking through the (well organized) paper stacks and find beautiful envelopes and cards. There are many types of card stock, mats, even canvas. They always have tons of crayons in wonderful colors to use as is, or melt to create cool designs. They have lots of calendars with great photos as well! What an awesome resource. I knew of Art From Scrap when I was at UCSB, eons ago, but never ventured inside until a couple of weeks ago. They have all sorts of random materials, from tile to fabric to old postcards to tiny electronic boards to cardboard rolls... seriously, the variety is staggering. I bought leather scraps and some nice card stock, but I could've gotten away with oh so much more had I not restrained myself. Plus prices were super reasonable. It is fairly well organized in spite of it containing an assortment of miscellaneous items that are difficult to organize. I was thrilled to discover Santa Barbara has its own art/craft supply recycling shop. Art From Scrap just celebrated their 20th anniversary, and the inventory does feel like it has been building up for awhile--it's your basic crafty grandma's attic, and you're free to browse to your heart's content through the many bins of buttons, wooden rings, fabric cuttings, circuit boards, wine corks, broken jewelry bits, used paints and brushes, scrap paper, and so forth. They have a great bulk section where you can load up a small bag ($4) or a large bag (didn't catch the price) with whatever odd assortment of bulk items that suits your fancy. They let me have a half a small bag of corks for $2, so it's nice you don't have to buy more than you need of any item (in case you don't want your own home to start resembling Art From Scrap). Outside there are piles of wood and half full paint cans, pretty floor tiles, and more fabric remnants. Just walking around this place will get your creativity flowing. If you want to see this brilliant effort in its full glory, go on Saturday morning, when you will find, like a Marrakech bazaar, sometimes up to a hundred very young kids oogling over countless bins of stuff that you and I would recycle or trash, admiring these objects as the sacred treasures which, in their truest identity, they are, and expostulating with each other on their relative value. These conversations are worth more than words in their spirit, which all too many of us have forgotten. One could film a documentary here, but that would profane the experience - because, as has been said: "Music - it's in the air - once it's gone - you can never quite capture it . .." Three stars for the shop, five stars for the workshops. We were lucky to drive past Art from Scrap early in our Santa Barbara visit, and thanks to their website, learned that they run regular Saturday morning workshops for kids. Our daughter loved the workshop in which she assembled a diorama from ingredients found in the store's remarkable treasure trove of odds and sods, and both she and her dad also attended (and enjoyed) a quilling workshop the next weekend. The store itself has a very large selection of interesting found objects you can turn into works of art, but it's fairly musty and chaotic. We're lucky to have a similar shop here in Vancouver -- and while it's a lot smaller, it's also a lot cleaner and better organized. If you're a crafty type, Art from Scrap is definitely worth a visit. It was one of our daughter's favorite parts of our vacation! read more

Great find. My child took a "creatures" class and loved it; I stocked up on supplies. Can't say I discovered the by-the-bag pricing system others mention in their reviews. The line was quite long due to many people buying a number of small, individually priced items. That's how it goes and I didn't mind waiting but luckily my husband was around to entertain the kids - you would not want to bring a young child here by yourself, since it's basically a candy store with a LOT of VERY interesting stuff at grab level.
