Unless you are perfectly average, or like me buy your clothes two sizes too big to feel thin, you will probably need at some point to have your clothes altered or repaired. There are many places in HK to this done, but I still make the special journey to the Superb Art Tailor in the Harbour Centre in Wan Chai, to have my clothes altered and fixed, due to the excellent handiwork of the seamstress. For guys, it's a bit more difficult to know when to go to your tailor and when to go to your seamstress (first world problem I know!). However, my advice is always to go to your seamstress first, as they are often equally skilled and a lot cheaper. My experiences here have mostly been good. For simple things like taking in a shirt, or shortening trousers, they will charge around HKD100, and have the item ready in a couple of days. The manager of the store is pleasant enough, and speaks pretty good English. If you want anything much more complicated, then it can become tricky. Another thing they are particularly good at is copying clothing. Say you have a pair of trousers that you really like, but can no longer get, if you supply the material, they will make and identical pair for you - same cut and everything. Actually, so accurately do they copy, that I once took in a coat that needed to be relined (it had torn), and they refitted all the tags and brand badges but with the original errors in them (the originals were wonky and they mimicked this!). My only gripe, and this is to do with copying, is their pricing. I went to have a waistcoat copied, and got a quote of a few hundred dollars. I then went to buy the material. When I returned to have the waistcoat made, they knew I was fast approaching a deadline and needed it in a hurry, so they added a few hundred more, "because it was more difficult", "the material I bought was different" (it wasn't), and a number of other silly excuses.
