    Warm interior

Austrian ski lodge interior & Latin kitchen? This place offers a strange mix in styles, but a great one. Excellent cocktails, great beer list (personally I love the stouts & porters), and good service. This place is quite small and gets often very busy, so experiences can be a bit variable. However, this place is mucho/muito different from other places. Great hangout after a day at work.

I can't say much more than those before me, & I'm working on my Saturday hangover while writing this but: Bar down an alley + Trendy setup + Great beer list = A good place to be any day of the week.

Fall break has officially begun, and since the girls have been eyeing Super Whatnot in the city, we decided on a low-key rendezvous there. The narrow entryway to this trendy bar is easy to miss. For one, it's located on Burnett Lane, an alleyway off of Queen Street and George. The lighting is dim, making the entrance unassuming and even more difficult to find, but this definitely isn't stopping it from being a popular hangout spot! The ambience of the bar is a relaxed, warm one, which I immediately liked. The brocade couches, wooden panels, day of the dead skulls, and picture of a deer on the wall did it for us! We ordered a few plates of nibbles along with our beer, which were all pretty decent. We had the Pao de Queijo (9), a Brazilian cheese bread, which was essentially a cheese flavored mochi bread ball. It was freshly made and had a nice crunch on the outside, with a chewy bread center. The Nachos Locos with beef (14) weren't quite as impressive, as they were a bit dry, as one of us pointed out, and the portion was just a bit small for what we were paying for (even for Oz!). Lastly, we had the Rasta Chicken (11), a crunchy Jamaican peppered chicken drumsticks, which came with "Bob Sauce." The chicken itself was nice and crunchy on the outside, but the highlight was definitely the sauce. I didn't pay attention to what it was, but it was good! Overall, the food was quite decent, along with the place itself. My only complaint was that the food took over 20, maybe even 25 minutes, to arrive. It wasn't busy at all, so I wonder at why their service was a bit slack. Either way, I would definitely recommend this place for a drink if you're in the city, as they also serve a variety of cocktails.

This guy is an up and comer. I saw Super Whatnot pop up on Facebook as a new place down Burnett Lane in the city - an after-product of a failed laneway project attempt - and I think it's utilised its space well. It's hard to believe that this little space used to be a storage area for a hairdressing salon, and I think it serves a much greater (and more lucrative) purpose now. I visited it on a Friday night so naturally, there were more older people here after work or having a night out. It seems like upstairs is an area occupied by the younger and downstairs by the older. Funny, that. Downstairs has lounges that wrap around the perimeter of the room while upstairs has more of a bar setting with bar stools and a really impressive and intricate design that forms the balcony barrier. Anyway, after having a turf war with a lady over a stool (seriously calm down, it's just a tool) my group and I managed to nestle into a corner and enjoy the ambiance. You can get a pipsqueak cider for $7, which was definitely my number one option. I like the place, but I'm not overly enthusiastic about it. It's still a young venue, still finding its feet, so I'll be really interested to see how it pans out and what type of venue it establishes itself as. I will say this, on a quieter night, I think the upstairs area would be a nice place for quiet conversation or a more intimate setting.

Cool spot I bumped into on Friday night - great DJ & good atmosphere. Small space so probably best with a smaller group.

Great selection of beers and cocktails. Nice little venue for a few sneaky midweek afterwork drinks. Bring your wallet though.

Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. People have fun here, and that's what being young and travelling the world is supposed to feel like. Footloose and fancy free.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.
