The normal buffalo wings
Marianna S.

It's great to be health conscious and aim for five serves of fruit and vegies a day - or is it seven serves of fruit and vegies? My body is a temple and occasionally it requires sacrifices of meat. Meat. Meat. Meat. I mean, so much meat that your sweat smells like meat for days afterwards. This happened the last couple of times I went to The Smokehouse BBQ (Formerly called Blue Smoke). Now I'm a big fan of Asian style honey soy chicken wings so I was intrigued by this South American style of smoking chicken wings. The prices seemed a little expensive but I went for their half price buffalo wing deal available at Tuesday to Friday at lunchtime. My friends and I gorged ourselves on their signature buffalo wings marinated in their secret smokey BBQ sauce and served with a blue cheese dip and celery. We ordered original and blue hot but I knew enough of my chilli tolerance to stay away from the 'third degree burn' option. As someone accustomed to Asian style chicken wing, it's hard to describe the taste of these Buffalo wings. The flavour was smoky sweet and sour at the same time. The blue cheese dip was fantastic for quelling the heat. I was impressed enough with the meal to go a second time. This time we went all out and ordered Pork and chicken platter and Texas Ribs. These dishes definitely show off their slow smoke cooking technique The pork pulled apart off the bone, the chicken was melt in your mouth and the ribs were packed with flavour. The prices are a little expensive but given the platter and the ribs could easily be shared between three people, I think their prices are fair. The next time your body craves protein, visit the SmokeHouse BBQ at New Farm.

Highly recommend the North Carolina Pulled Pork platter, Big Rib Platter, Pork and Chicken Platter. They do what they do really well.

I've elevated my score due to a perfect early afternoon repast of wings, rub platter and spinach salad and service!

We called ahead to book a table, though when we arrived we realised that it was more of a fast food establishment than a restaurant. The waitress was very friendly, she provided us with the menus and explained how we needed to go up to the counter to place the order. She recommended that we try the Pit Master Pack, since we had not eaten there before. This goes for $59.95, and the two cans of soft drink ended up costing a good $7. The Pit Master Pack consisted of ribs, quite a few buffalo wings, hand pulled pork, coleslaw and fries. It is a good serving for two people. I am not the biggest chicken wing fan, though enjoyed them, apart from there being a bit too much sauce. We chose the cheese covered fries, though they weren't that great, we probably should have gone with the plain fries. The food was nice, though far from mind blowing, which made the pricing hard to justify. We left a bit unsatisfied in terms of how full we were, and how much everything cost, even with the voucher. I personally wouldn't visit here again, it is not for me. I would only recommend this establishment to someone who was really into buffalo wings and ribs.

Seriously, the food here is not cheap. BUT - it is bloody good. When our order arrived my eyes drank in the beauty of my pulled beef roll, while hubby rubbed his hands with glee over his chilli hot dog and loaded fries. And the first bite made the pain of the cost fade away- amazing. Well worth it! In fact despite being hungry I I couldn't eat the whole thing as the servings are generous. When this joint first opened there were lines out the door and long waits, but we were one of only three diners at lunchtime today. The cute checked tablecloths and mustard with ketchup on the tables adds to the US of A atmosphere, the only downside to the location on a nice day is being serenaded by the traffic on the main road. Two thumbs up for the food. My wallet is still hurting but at least I'm so full I won't want dinner tonight.

Never again will I slum it through the drive thru of a golden arch for a cheeseburger fix. This was the real deal - there was even coleslaw on this puppy. The bun was toasted to a crisp perfection, the right balance of ketchup to mustard and a meat patty that had some oomph to it. Carolina Kitchen is a family business owned by an expat from South Carolina, Mike Perry, located on a quiet suburban street in Coopooroo. Already there is a massive following on their Facebook group, with regulars and new comers singing their praises for the Buffalo Wings and BBQ Ribs. Both times I've been for a Saturday lunch, we've booked to save us a table. The place fills up quickly, so if you have more than 2 people, I would definitely suggest booking ahead of time. The BBQ ribs are so juicy and covered in sauce, and the Buffalo wings pack a punch with the original spicy sauce. Dip the wings in the blue cheese dipping sauce to cool your mouth. They have a wide variety of different flavoured Coke, Dr Pepper and Fanta - flavours you don't usually get in Australia. Cherry Dr Pepper tastes like sugary baby Panadol, but I love it! For a serious feed you can either go with one of the Hoagies - a sandwich on a long, Sub roll - or a burger "All The Way". That means everything including onions. There's cheeseburgers, chicken burgers and hamburgers, as well as Hot Dogs. Unfortunately, during my last visit they didn't have any Pie for sale, but quite often they will be selling a Pumpkin, Cherry or Pecan pie by the slice. I did manage to place an order for a Pumpkin pie to take home for Christmas. $30 for a whole sweet pie - traditional American style Pumpkin pie!

When we looked at the menu for Roasties or mouths were watering as everything sounded amazing. Ribs -chicken - rolls - flavour fries - American sweets and drinks, it all seemed amazing, despite the low-high varying prices, but sadly as most things seem, it was too good to be true. My company and myself ordered the pulled pork, country styled chicken, and the Philly cheese steak roll and New York flavour fries. The first downfall, the meal sizes were rather small, they did not seem plentiful at all as if there was an attempt for the meals to be sophisticated in a restaurant people would go to for greasy delicious food. Sadly the arrangement didn't work. On a positive note the fries came is large portions and we're definitely the standout. The New York fries came covered in Cheese-wiz, sour cream, bacon and shallots, it was amazing and they were delicious. Besides them getting cold rather quickly, they were amazing and I would gladly order them take-away in the future. Sides that came with meals were not tasteful at the slightest unless you had peculiar tastes, and again were in extremely small portions. I feel harsh leaving such comments on a place with such high potential but I can only be honest. Roasties is an American BBQ restaurant with amazing potential and a great looking menu. If portion sizes can be adjusted, prices can suit food quality, and food can be hotter, then Roasties can definitely be an amazing restaurant.

They've got a good selection of beers including our personal favourite American Beer - Blue Moon. Some on tap, some in bottles. They've also got a very interesting selection of cocktails, one that even includes root beer, which is absolutely delicious! To make things even better, they have live music every night from about 7.30pm, and serve free pretzels. Beers are about $8.50, cocktails range from $14-$16. Note though, and this has also been mentioned in other reviews - those pretzels are the only food that you will find here. This is purely a drinks and cocktails bar. This is what brought my work colleagues and I back to Shady Palms Cafe and Bar. We have lunched here before and really enjoyed their rustic loose take on Mexican food but the parking situation can make it a tough choice for our precious one hour break. We ventured there this afternoon in a group of four and were happy to find they are keeping up their high standard of fare. I ordered the fried polenta with blue cheese sauce as a starter and the pineapple and shrimp tacos all identified as gf on the menu, HALLELUJAH!!! My colleagues went with the quesadilla and two pork belly burgers respectively. Everyone was super impressed with their food and the delicious sauces that accompanied everything. The polenta was crispy and very tasty with the blue cheese sauce. I would have liked them to be a little less thickly cut so the crunch would be more obvious. The tacos were a stand-out, the home made taco itself was flexible and tasted amazing with the thin swipe of herby pesto. I didn't taste any pineapple, but the cabbage slaw complimented the fried shrimp and slight tang of lime and chilli. These were mild so I didn't feel my mouth turn to fire (good news as I'm a wuss when it comes to spice). The service is what let us down today and prevented Shady Palms from getting 5 stars. When we stood up to order at the order window it was like we were all invisible.. until one staff member came back in from outside and served us. Even she commented that her colleagues had been "ignoring us". We weren't offered any water bottles or glasses and the meals came out very staggered (mine took at least 10 minutes longer than everyone elses). I can let this mostly slide, as the food was imaginative and always consistently well prepared and the ambience was perfectly cosy while still being interesting to the eye. Greaser's shtick is, well, a 50s American greaser bar. Think of the kind of place James Dean and the Fonz would have a beverage. It also serves greasy (hehe) American food like fried chicken, burgers, fries and hot dogs. Greaser's front bar area is not a creepy dungeon at all, and quite elegant and cosy under the dim lighting. Between all of us, my group of friends ordered everything off the menu. I ordered the fried chicken. The coating was KFC-like but with interesting spices in it - I think it may have been dukkah. Unlike KFC, I didn't feel sadness and regrets afterwards - it was really delicious. Our meals came with onion-y "red eye" gravy and smoked chipotle mayonnaise, which I quickly became addicted to and mopped up with chips. There's a few interesting beers on tap but I had the special that night - whisky with freshly-made apple juice, straight from the juicer. PLUS the bar played some fun rockabilly and 80s tunes that got us chair-dancing over our burgers. Greaser is pretty cool. I hope they hold events and gigs in the future because it's a rad little space.

Hands down the best bar in Brisbane I've been to in years…read more Greaser is bang on trend in the way that only a place opened once a trend has settled down can be. Serves generally American food and drinks? Check. Craft beer? Check. Much edgier barstaff than you are? Check? Down an alley? Check. Johnny Cash on the stereo? Check and check. I wanted to go because I wanted to try it but with some recent rock bottom experiences with other bars in this vein I kept expectations set to low. There is nothing particularly original about Greasers. American food stopped being a revelation a while ago, and frankly is starting to grate a little. Bloody Marys and Picklebacks are having a real moment right now so people are slinging them at you anywhere you go. And craft beer? You can now actually get it with breakfast some places. The fact that these are everywhere does not in any way diminish their appeal. I like burgers, I love bloody marys, and I enjoy brine more than is entirely reasonable. And these offerings are made all the more appealing by Greaser. The space itself is lovely with ample couch seating and booths, elegantly low lighting that isn't seedy and the mid-century music that is curated rather than cloying. Special mention must be made of the staff. During our visit they were uniformly incredibly polite, attentive and very very pleasant to deal with. Knowledgeable about the drinks behind them and able to mix an excellent cocktail. These are the sort of staff we should see more of and who should be clutched like rare diamonds by bar owners. Special shout to the woman with the tattoos and undercut. She mixed what is easily the best bloody mary I've had in Brisbane. Served on bourbon with plenty of hot sauce, this was living and this was living well. Greaser also has a top flight tequila selection which is really great to see. It's wonderful that more places are experimenting with tequila and incorporating it into more than shots, which is a really barbaric way to treat a drink of such complexity. One of our group hailed from Mexico City so this was a blessed relief. My ex is Mexican and nothing says 'Australians are completely clueless about soft racism' than taking someone's national drink and letting bogans punch it until they fall over Here the reposada is served in appropriate glassware and all is good. The troubles with on-trend establishments are just like the troubles of any other establishment, poor staff, wrong price point, sub-par offerings etc. The problem is when a venue is also tricked up there can be a gloss over it that keeps people coming back for no particularly great reason other than to be seen to enjoy themselves. Greaser suffers for none of this. This is a bar that is serious about being a bar. All venues need an edge. But as more and more venues in Brisbane slide from creative to kitsch it is deeply refreshing to see a venue like Greaser that maintains an interesting point but does it with a laser like focus on great service, great décor, great drinks and great food. It's a real credit to the group behind this venture. I'll be back. A lot.
