I'm sort of wondering whether this place is drawing its inspiration from that children's show back in the eighties. Well, I suspect that it is though a part of me feels that that show and this bar really have little in common. Actually, the place was okay, but it really wasn't one of those places that really stand out for me. Well, it sort of does, particularly with the seating out the front in the area that is not on the road, and they also had some nice beers here as well, however with all the other places that I have visited, this place really didn't stand out all that much. read more

My friends love this place because all is welcome and I would definitely agree on that point. I am not sure what it was but it had a bad stench when we first walked in that I couldn't get out of mind the entire time I was there. It was a Sunday evening and they had great music from a cool DJ when we first arrived but they packed up shortly after. It wasn't too crowded and I am not sure what to make of the Rumpus Room. I've been to quite a few places in West End and the vibe was bit different but I am not sure if the day or time were factors. There was a little accident while we were there and the staff made sure I was OK and cleaned up the broken glass immediately. I appreciated that very much. read more

The Rumpus Room is right in the middle of West End, and thus becomes one of those places that you kind of just 'stop by' while on your journey for more drinks. Or pre-dinner. Or post-lunch. Or whenever. The drinks are inexpensive (compared to the rest of West End, not counting the Hotel) and the vibe is very unpretentious. Lounge back in one of the sofas or giant bean bags (although I'm wary of those bean bags, I feel they may have experienced too much in their beany lives), or chill out on one of the many tables outside. Rumpus Room does tend to get packed on weekends, but not in that ohmygoshI'minthevalley type of way. And what's interesting is the clientele; there's a mix of students, workers having a knock off drink, yuppies, hipsters, and hippies. All conglomerating together in this bar like it's no big deal, bless. But the crowd on weekends definitely knows how to enjoy itself, and you can expect lots of chatting up and dancing. It's a good vibe, people are friendly and the staff are (generally) pretty quick. And the DJ's spinning smooth tunes on the decks helps this place maintain it's, 'shambolic chic' reputation. It's a great place to go if you just want to enjoy the evening without worrying about going home broke, or getting 'freezed out' by hipster circles. Because anything goes here, and when you get hungry you're smack-bang in the middle of the many cafes and restaurants in West End! And for the ladies, check out the giant mural in the bathroom. Rumpus Room. What a good name for a nightlife venue, right? I don't even think Rumpus is supposed to be targeted at younger people but I love it anyway. Maybe it's because a lot of my West End antics have taken place there and I've fondly accumulated memories; maybe it's because the gracious bar tenders will whip up a wild cocktail with just a simple request and a kind word. Or maybe it's because when we need a place to congregate in West End that isn't the Fox or Archive, Rumpus will suffice as a third but equally honourable choice. Whatever the reason, this guy has a place in my heart. I've been here on a date, in a small group setting and as part of a particularly boisterous birthday party or two and each time, Rumpus never lets you down! It's a really great starting point when you want people to congregate rather than split up and bail to multiple venues like they can in the city. At Rumpus, you can trap them until you want to definitively move elsewhere! Anyway, it's a good little venue and a nice open space to mingle through. Plus it's right near ATMs and kebab shops so what more could you need? read more

Oh Rumpus Room. I have had some shifty nights at you. As I'm sure most of Brisbane has. Let's break this place down into a quick positives and negatives. Pros: - Runs an awesome vintage market on the occasional Saturday. No really, possibly the best vintage in Brisbane. - Great location and a good mix of indoor and outdoor lounge seating. - Attracts a generally nice crowd and plays not horrendous music. Cons: - The cocktails can be deadly. Make sure an experienced bartender is making it, because if some guy pulls out a method sheet and starts mixing, it will taste like paint stripper. It will both get you incredibly wasted and strip your insides of vital organs. One time I had one and then watched a Ke$ha interview and came out thinking that woman was a genius. It wasn't pretty. So protip: Stick to the beer. You will thank me later. read more

The Rumpus Room, good old Rumpo - a great local corner pub and a real West End institution. The Rumpus puts the cool in old school. Listen to old school style 80s/90s hip hop, 70s souls, reggae, dub and ska on the decks, spun by 'real' DJs who pride themselves on their vinyl collections and know how to scratch your itch. Old school approach to giving the punters what they want - a couple of beers on tap, a respectable cocktail list and a good selection of spirits. No fancy tapas or bar food but they will let you order a kebab form next door and enjoy it on the premises. One of my favourite parts of Rumpus Room isn't the room at all, but the casual outdoor beer garden, situated behind West End's famous lizard statue and shaded by a large tree. People head out here to enjoy lazy afternoon drinks and smokes (which means you can't eat here do to smoking regulations) and meet friends old and new. Unfortunately, they shut this section down at about 9pm every night so you have to head back into the confines of the great indoors. Initiates to the joys of Rumpus should also be mindful of the following points. There is a resident ring-tail possum in the tree above the beer garden who's known for his habit of dropping 'gifts' on the unsuspecting reveler. Be eternally vigilant. Also note, this isn't a city bar where you can go upto the DJ booth and have him or her happily oblige your request of 'It's Raining Men' or 'Baby One More Time'. The Rumpus DJs don't take requests, with a typical response to such suggestions being "I don't come to your house and tell you what to play on your stereo do I?" Enough said. read more

The Rumpus Room is essentially a rumpus, but not a dagga rumpus but a hip kind of chilled out rumpus. I have not been to the Rumpus Room in a while but I remember having some good time dancing on the floor and chilling out on the bean bags. What I like about the Rumpus Room is how it is not obnoxious, you can have dreads and tattoos and not be looked down at (I have neither of those things but it just feels like that kind of place). There is a descent sized dance floor, but also quite a few spots to sit and chill out at. The outdoors area is good if you just want to sit down with your drink and enjoy the summer breeze. Like a lot of good places though, this rumpus does get pretty packed so it may be hard for you to get a good table to sometimes and you will not always be able to sit on one of the beanbags. All in all, there is not much to dislike about Rumpus Room, out of the bars in West End, it is one of the better places to hang out at. read more

What I like most about Rumpus Room is their ciders; they're cheap, tasty, and there's a great range. The staff are knowledgeable about them, and are more than willing to share some expert advice. The dance floor here is also pretty entertaining, regardless of whether or not you're an active participant or just a quiet observer. I once watched a guy dance (I mean dance, not just toe tapping or head bopping) for three hours. And apparently he'd been like that for two hours before I'd arrived! The crowd here is pretty laid back; there aren't any set demographics that dominate - most people just come for a cheap beer and a boogie. There's plenty of seating space, and the chairs are comfy and conducive to group conversation. Or, if you're interested in a more intimate chat, there are tables and booths located towards the back of the bar, beside the bathrooms. The venue itself spills out onto the sidewalk area, and a lot of the patrons like to take a seat on the public art (particularly the clay lizard) and have a chat with the West End locals. Supposedly renowned for its eclectic interior of sheep fur and people, I was disappointed with this place. I love West End a lot, so I always find myself on this part of town; however, Rumpus Room does not stack up against well compared to the other pubs and bars in the area. The drinks are overpriced, and the lack of large crowds in general isn't appealing either. read more

The second time I ever went there, a bouncer suddenly refused me entry. I had no idea why as I just been sitting outside talking. Wow. I was tipsy but in no way dangerously intoxicated or causing trouble. I wasn't told why so I said OK as I didn't want to cause any trouble but if I could just use the bathroom before leaving. I was told no and was then pushed by this bouncer/glass collector. When I asked why he had pushed me (a woman) he called me a name and said he could push a girl because I had been refused entry. My friends and I really don't know what I did that night to upset bouncer/glass collector #28 but I don't think we'll be patronising a place where the staff think it's OK to push women around. There are a lot of other much cooler places in West End to hang out. read more
