I started off with the tilapia and shrimp tacos. Both were decent but my tastebuds needed a little kick that wasn't there. The enchiladas and wet burrito combos were decent also and they came with a huge portion of beans and rice that were a little to overwhelming for me but to some individuals not so much. A taco Tuesday done not right can be found in a very not so super way right here! So like outta nothing it was all Taco Tuesday and this was the closest to us at the given time was it worth it I think not as everything we received here was just kinda lousy. Chips and salsa were ok if your not into salsa that has a flavor of your liking then you might enjoy it. Their Taco Tuesday tacos might as just be called lettuce wraps in a fried shell because u had to search far and wide to find any type of meaty substance in them. It's taco Tuesday so I don't expect an insane amount of food for the discounted price but what we received here was even short of that for all that it was. The service and margaritas had to be the worst it was some time before they brought our drinks to us I was soo annoyed by this I walked up behind the bar and filled our own water cups because everyone I was with was thirsty and seriously like 20min later we needed a drink. Had dinner last night and I had the beef tamale and enchilada plate. The tamale was worst tamale I ever had, the masa was so hard I could barely cut it with a knife. The beef was very dry. We are in the middle of Covid pandemic, so I am guessing the restaurant is closed for dine-in like everywhere else... My work did an online group order this week. This was my first time trying this place, so won't be rating service or vibe since we didn't have that. I had the tilapia plate with their salsa on the side. It came with grilled bell peppers/onions, rice that was green, and corn tortilla on the side. Honestly, this is probably the best Mexican food I've had in the past two months! Odd because as of this writeup, the place only has 3 stars. Looks like it could be a hit and miss? I didn't hear any complaints from anyone on the team and we had roughly 20 on this group order. Everything was packaged nicely with our names, the plastic silverware was wrapped up individually, we received lots of extra fried tortillas and what I imagine is their secret salsa on the side. This was such a nice touch! And best of all, the delivery came warm/hot. I can tell you - even with a few of us trying to be on a diet, we finished all the fried tortillas! However, those days are over as of last week. Every week somehow they manage to screw up our order and even my super people pleaser husband gave up on them. Their offenses are as follow. 1. They forgot to put tacos for my husband's taco combo 2. My husband ordered side of large salsa for his meal. Come home no salsa. 3. He come home and found out they forgot my order. Each time he gave them 20% tip like an idiot. Last week I told him not to tip and check our order in parking lot which he did and found out they forgot to put salsa again!!! Our server, decent margaritas and edible food kept my rating at a 3. Honestly, I always want to like this place more than I do. We've been here before and always found the food decent. Today was worse, but not a trainwreck either. We come here on rare occasion and it's usually for the margaritas. They'll make them blended (too many places don't), not too sweet, and you can taste enough alcohol to know it's there (without it being overwhelming). They're generous with the chips (more like tostadas) and salsa, which tastes a bit like Pace but better. Our server was sweet and attentive and she did her best to help spice up my husband's food (he asked for extra spicy and it came out UN-spicy). I do wish she'd asked before bringing the two of us a third salsa. I haste wasting food. She did ask before bringing us more chips though, and we said yes, so her efforts are understood. That's about where the positives end. I will say, I married into a Mexican family and meeting them introduced me to great, authentic food beyond what I knew...so that probably affects my judgment now. Come to Super Mex if you want mainstream American Mexican food (ex: no cotija...expect cheddar and Monterey jack). It's pretty much the stuff I grew up with in small-town Norcal (before they became more culturally diverse). Today, either they felt slammed in the kitchen or they're taking shortcuts on the regular, but my chile relleno was literally just a canned chile laid flat with cheese in the middle, then drenched in sauce. No batter whatsoever, and I've seen pics on their yelp of battered chile rellenos so I know they've offered them before. They charge extra for them too, so that was frustrating. The chicken enchilada was fine - well filled. My crispy taco was freshly fried, but one side was still drenched in oil so there was no successful attempt to dry it. I didn't manage to take a picture because my hands were covered in grease. The carne asada inside was good and while I appreciate guacamole, that was the only topping - a glob of guacamole that oozed out of a hole in my already soggy shell. No onions, cilantro, cabbage, or anything else, so I felt overwhelmed by the guac and lack of flavor/texture balance. My husband ordered the chilaquiles and while they're not his favorite there, he noted that he still chooses to order them so they're good enough to eat. Especially when we have a nice server, I feel really uncomfortable bringing up comments like these in person. I'd rather leave a review that will hopefully be seen and considered by management. It would be nice to see improvement, but I'm not motivated to stick around to see if it happens. Ok so I have a lot of food restrictions, and am in town visiting a friend. He took me here and the menu was.. disappointing. There wasn't a single vegetarian option listed. So we asked to make sure, and the lovely human behind the counter offered to make me something I could eat. It was literally grilled veggies, guac, rice and beans in a burrito. I am sorry to say I was so hungry after not eating all day due to travel that I inhaled it before I could take pictures. It was HUGE, like bigger than the ones I get in Vegas. They also give you homemade hard shell tortillas and so I deconstructed the burrito and used the tortillas like chips and the burrito filling like dip. It definitely had a kick to it, and my no spice tolerance self had a rough time but it was worth it. read more

How I love SuperMex - Irvine, let me count the ways: My family has lived in Irvine for 30 yrs. SuperMex is perfectly located 5 min. from our house, door to door. We can order our food, and have it piping hot at home very quickly. The service is fantastic. We have been coming here for 30 yrs and have always had excellent service from all; Hostess, Waiters/Waitresses, Chef, Bartenders even the take-out staff. The food is superb! Always hot! (I'm very peculiar about having my meal hot. We've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all been perfect. Having picky eaters in my family the staff has always been accommodating with the "add this" and "take-off that". We can't seem to get enough of the beans and rice here. We enjoy the ambiance with of course the Mexican theme throughout the restaurant. I enjoy the traditional music while my husband enjoys the televisions. And the patio on a summer night - perfect. Although, I have seen the prices go up over the years the fact is we always have left-overs for a 2nd evening. Can't go wrong with that and it's just as delicious the 2nd day. Thank you SuperMex for all of the wonderful meals. Regardless of where we eat, either in the restaurant or take-out we're never disappointed. Living in Southern California allows for some certain perks... like great Mexican food, in a plethora of places. (OC may not be as good as SD, but we definitely have great spots in the area) Super Mex is somewhere between authentic and tex-mex, and a lot of the flavors are there, but the execution is wrong. The service was great, on a semi-busy Sunday night, our server was very good at getting what we needed, and getting the orders correct. We waited quite a bit for the food to come, but we were a larger group. And then came the food... My "mixed fajitas" platter was just a bit off. The great thing about fajitas is the char the vegetables and proteins get when sizzling on the flat top. I'm OK with it not sizzling at my table, but the char has GOT to be there. All my food had NO char, like it was in a frying pan, for a few seconds... if that. The onions weren't caramelized, and my bell peppers were still pretty raw... and don't get met started on the tomatoes! Someone should also permanently remove ice-berg lettuce from any Mexican food that isn't a tex-mex taco...it doesn't belong, and most definitely not on a fajitas platter (which, btw, should also have no lettuce) My Chili Relleno also came out cold. Bleh. That's an instant no-no: in that this plate stood there, possibly under a heat lamp, possibly not, for an extended period of time. No bueno. We've been to Super Mex in Fullerton, Long Beach and Lakewood and let me tell you ... this location does not measure up. It lacks consistency. All the other locations have great service and food. 1. We were told to sit wherever we wanted instead of being walked to a table like all others. 2. The restaurant was understaffed. You had one employee working the entire outside patio and some tables inside. 3. The salsa is a big hit at Super Mex but not at this location. It was good just not consistent to all the others. It was watered down and just didn't taste the same. 4. Once the patio started to empty out ... the dirty plates remained at the tables (a total of 5-6 tables) for about 30+ mins. 5. I havent been to Super Mex in a good year or two, and today I was reminded why. Decided to come here for lunch today... and against my better judgement, I still entered this restaurant as a RAT ran past me as I was walking in. I have ZERO explanation as to why I still ate here, I am blaming my 1 hour of sleep I got last night because NO WAY would I have done this on any other day. So, a rat scurrying away as I an entering the restaurant, and a dead rat on the ledge of the patio. Saw the dead one after I ate. I am praying I do not get sick from my lunch I ate here. The restaurant was almost empty, which never used to be the case. Another red flag I should have paid attention to. The chips I got were undercooked / greasy / stale. The salsa was spilled all over the little basket it came in with the chips. I ordered the two crispy taco combo, with chicken tacos. Grease spilled out of the tacos when I picked them up to eat them, and the entire meal just wasnt what it used to be. It lacked flavor and was just meh. I just... I cant. Never again. read more

Mixed reviews on this place. Couple good things, couple not so good things. Let's start with the good: The staff if really nice. The waiter was great, as well as the people behind the counter when you purchase take out. The crunchy shredded beef taco is really good, so I would def recommend the taco pack. The spicy chile relleno is REALLY good. Loved every bite of that. Rice/bean on the combo plate were equally tasty. Sounds funny that I'm praising the rice and beans, but they were actually really good, so didn't want to leave that out. My boy like the taquitos, and he was telling me how good the guacamole was, so I'm going to have to say that those were both excellent. (He's usually not that vocal about guacamole) Then we get to the not so good: The carnitas was pretty bland. We had the carnitas tostada and it looked really visually appealing, but just didn't have the kick that the other items had. Again, might have been a bad day, and the other items were pretty good so..... Service, although friendly, was really slow. The food took quite a while to come out, and my kid noticed that there weren't that many people in the restaurant. My only hope would be that they have more staff when they expect it to be really crowded. Recommendation: Order take out, and get the tacos. Can't go wrong there. If you're coming for taco Tuesday, don't! Rubio's is better than here for that. They're also super pricy for tacos. One taco is $7, so don't come for tacos either. However, their other options on the menu are fairly good prices. We ordered asada fries and it wasn't on the menu. They replaced the nachos with fries for us and omg, so glad my husband and I decided to share because with both of us and we barely finished it and it was phenomenal! You will notice that they're pretty cheap on things. We asked for guacamole on the fries and they make you pay $1.5 extra for it and it was barely a tablespoon. So would we come back? My cousin ordered a crispy beef taco and a crispy chicken taco. But, the chicken ended up being a soft taco. It took a while to get a waiter's attention to correct the problem. I had to watch as this ignorant woman and her husband walked into the takeout area without masks on like the rest of us waiting for our food. I've been going to Super Mex for years and it is still one of my favorite places to go for authentic Mexican food. It is not one of those fancy boutique type restaurants and they serve up quality food at good prices. If you order one of their meals, you will not leave hungry. Meals always start with an endless supply of crispy fried corn tortillas and the perfect blend of salsa. Be careful because its so addicting that you can easily fill up before your meal is served. This is the perfect time to enjoy your favorite drink. The favorites here, are just about any burrito on the menu. I've tried most of them and they are all good. The Super Mex Burrito is especially good, and comes with your choice of meat. It is a very big burrito and about half of it usually comes home with me in a box. The combination plates are great if you want to try a mix of entrees. I love the enchiladas and crispy tacos. Service at Super Mex is typically great and the staff is nice and personable. read more

I love their salsa though, even though it's watery. I tried their chili relleno for the first time, and it was killer. But this last time we were here, the credit card machine was broken. After I printed the menu and showed it to my wife Diana we decided to have lunch at this location. Jose our server was super nice & friendly and was helpful in our ordering. For our appetizer we had; Chips and Salsa; The chips were round and crispy corn tortillas. They were fresh, crispy, & tasty and the green salsa was flavorful. For my Entrée I ordered: The # 23 Combination Platter; One Cheese Enchilada, Shredded Beef Taco, and a Chile Relleno. included was beans and rice. A great combination of flavors. I drank a Diet Coke to balance my meal. Diana also had: The # 23 Platter; but had a chicken taco hard shell with beans and rice. It was flavorful. Diana also drank a Diet Coke with her meal. For Dessert: I ordered: Two Rich Caramel Flan; A smooth cluster with caramel on top & whipped cream with a cherry. They were super duperly delicious. I thanked management for allowing some photos. Super Mex closed all their Las Vegas locations and my wife and I were very upset. Super Mex was our go to Mexican restaurant. When we came to SOCAL one of our must stops was Super Mex. We sat down and had their signature chips and delicious salsa. We had Diego as our sever. Diego was a great sever and very friendly. I ordered the chicken Super Mex Burrito and my wife ordered cheese enchiladas the baby had some refried beans. I love this restaurant and Diego and the kitchen staff did not disappoint! Placed an online order that included a CHICKEN machaca burrito amongst other items. About 4-5 bites in I realized it was definitely not chicken but beef. I typically put salsa on top after each bite, so I unfortunately didn't catch it until after that fifth bite. Maybe not a big deal for most people, but I haven't eaten beef in 25 years. I'm now dealing with some major stomach issues as a result. I was never a big fan of this place to begin with, so needless to say I will not be going back.
