We did a take out order by ordering in house and when we got home, we were so disappointed. Our order had the wrong items. Slow for a taco Tuesday but I get it. Service was prompt but y'all need some volume in your voice. Even with only half a dozen people in the place we still couldn't hear you not could we understand your spanglish. Food was decently ehh. Margaritas need some work. There's only one way to make a margarita in less than 30 seconds and Juan has it figured out........premade bottled crap that looks and taste like a glass of shitty lemon juice! Make it fresh and correct every time or take it off the menu. Pretty simple process. Tostadas are loaded from a flippin red trash can in the kitchen. Sat there and watched dude pull them out bare handed while wiping his sweaty face with the same damn hand!!! Disgusting! Clean the tables better between guests. A HUGE shot out to the staff at the Irvine location tonight! They were very busy and really short staffed. The servers and bar tenders did AN AMAZING JOB despite all the obstacles. I would give them a zero if I could. About a month ago I got a to go order of flautas. When I got them home, they were so small and very different than what they used to be. They cost like $17 for the flair as I've ever seen. Now, today I come in and there's a waiter and he's so uninterested and not smiling. Not pleasant at all. I ordered taquitos so I ordered just two taquitos because those were just those were 8.75 for a La carts. two taquitos they came to my table and they literally looked like, the taquitos you can get at the grocery store that are the tiniest, barely any meat in them taquitos that you can get. They were greasy there was no sour cream. When do you not get sour cream with taquitos they said we don't do it for two taquitos only if you order four. Otherwise you have to pay two more dollars. and then so I said never mind, and I took the taquito which was so greasy and dipped it in the guacamole it was the worst tasting thing ever greasy and gross tasting. I will never come to Super Mex again. II used to love this place. So I had to come over and I told her I'm not gonna pay for this. This is really bad. She said OK I'm on my way to jalapeños restaurant. Don't Waste your time here it's gross. And, it used to be when you would go into Supermax. It was full. The restaurant was full. Like right now in the parking areas with all these different restaurants here and there's no parking spaces and there's hardly anybody in in Super Mex right now probably because of the poor tasting food and high prices with little tiny portions. I hate to write this review but I feel it is warranted. I have been a loyal Super Mex customer for over 30 years. I have never had the experience my wife just had tonight. I called in and placed an order for takeout at the Irvine location. My wife was in the area and we don't live to close so I thought it would be a perfect time to support the restaurant. I was greeted on the phone by a Danielle. She was very pleasant and repeated my order back to ensure she had it right. Danielle quoted 15 minutes and the call ended, so far so good. My wife arrived about 15 minutes later and was told the order was not ready, but proceeded to pay. As she sat waiting for the order to be finished, a few customers came in, ordered food, and then after a few minutes, left with food. When my wife asked how much longer our food would take, the young man behind the counter told my wife they are very busy and it will take 20 more minutes. When my wife questioned why people who walked in after her have already received their food, he repeated 20 minutes. My wife walked outside to check on my teenage daughter who was waiting in the car and to let her know it would be 20 more minutes. My wife walked back in after 10-15 minutes and asked if the food was ready as she saw bags on the counter. The same young man said no and continued to braid his coworkers hair and talk about disneyland. After a few more minutes, the young man decided it was our food on the counter. As my wife was collecting the food she mentioned I was originally quoted 15 minutes on the phone and it had taken 3 times that. It would be nice next time to say it will take 30-45 minutes if they are busy to set the expectation for the customer. His response was "byeeeeee". My wife was a little shocked by the comment and he repeated "byeeeee" with a smirk. I know this was a family run company, I am not sure if the original owners are still involved but this is far from the Super Mex I grew up with, visiting after water polo matches in Long Beach. This may be my last visit to at least the Irvine location. It's too bad because the Irvine location is now the closest location to where I live, about 20 minutes away. I have been coming to Super Mex for YEARS. It was a staple meet up with one of my best friends, and we met back up here again recently. The quality hasn't changed and the margaritas are as good as ever. They didn't have watermelon margaritas (boooo), but they did have a guava margarita, which was recommended by the waitress. Despite not liking guavas, I decided to give it a shot. It was delicious! Just sweet enough, and surprisingly not too much like guava. The salsa is amazing. The food is not exceptional, but it's consistently good, and they have a wide variety of things to choose from. I had a combo with a ground beef enchilada and a crunchy chicken taco. The taco was great, but the enchilada was just okay. It had potatoes in addition to the ground beef, which was fine, but shredded beef would have been much better. If you want amazing mexican food then this isn't really for you, but if you want a chill place for a decent meal at a good price, then this is a good stop. read more

Sunday morning meal to get caught up with my Niece attending UCI. Juan seated us immediately and served us just as quickly. Only six other patrons were there when we arrived and more filled the seats during our meal. Sierra ordered the Carnitas dinner plate and I ordered two shredded beef enchiladas meal. Also ordered sour cream and guacamole. The chips were fresh and large, round oversized chips and the salsa tasted fresh, but certainly not hot, maybe mild. We both enjoyed the food, but my only complaints were that the restaurant was too dark (and we sat next to the front windows), the music was to loud for 11:05 a.m., and the men's bathroom was a mess with a lot of paper thrown around by the baby changing station. Went to lunch with my friend and her five coworkers here last week. We arrived around 12 and there was barely anybody here. They seated us on the patio and turned the heaters on for us since it was kind of cold that day. Chips and salsa were brought out immediately. They don't give you "chips" here, they give you whole fried tortillas. I personally like chips better, especially when I am sharing with a bunch of people I don't really know and we are all touching and breaking pieces off. I am not really paranoid about germs, but you never know how other people feel. I just think this is a bad idea. Other than that, the chips and salsa were tasty. We all ordered. The food was brought out quickly. All of our orders were correct and the waitress didn't hesitate to bring us other items - more salsa, extra sour cream, etc... The food was alright. I ordered a two enchilada combo plate, one beef, one chicken. I liked the beef better, the flavor of the chicken wasn't the best. The rice and beans were average, the rice was a bit dry for my taste. We decided to split the bill up evenly between the seven of us, and it came to $11 for each person, including tax and tip. Not a bad deal. Before we left the waitress refilled our drinks in to go cups so we could take the drinks with us. That was nice of her. Average Mexican food, seems like a good place for a quick lunch on a work day, not sure I would go out of my way to come here for dinner. read more

It was Tuesday and we were looking for a place for Taco Tuesday and decided to stop in. They didn't have any deals but we decided to try it out anyway. I got the chicken enchilada which was just ok. The chicken was dry and tasteless. The rice was flavorless too. The only good thing was the chips and salsa. What prompted this review was this: My dad got their chile releno, enchilada plate and ended up with food poisoning. Violent vomiting and stomach cramps when he got home. Downgrading my review for 2019. I don't know what happened. It's still a good spot for sit down and they make excellent margaritas but the take out section is a disaster. I don't know what happened but they don't understand their own menu. They don't know what the word vegetarian means (if it has a face, it's not vegetarian. No fish, beef, pork, chicken, other seafood, etc). My order literally hasn't changed for 5 years, but in the last 2 weeks, despite making the same order, the person who answers the phone needs to go back and ask someone about every thing I'm ordering. Just because I asked for vegetarian beans and rice. This is never a problem when I sit down to eat there (I did that 2 weeks ago and had a lovely meal). It took me 20 minutes to order 4 items and when I got there, they missed something, so I had to reorder the missing item and wait another 10 minutes with antsy kids (one who had fallen asleep). If I had known this would be an issue I would have sat there and eaten with my kids. The plan was to save time by ordering from the car on my way to pick it up. My 20 minute drive would have been enough time for my order to be ready when I got there, parked, and brought my kids inside. Instead they hadn't finished taking my order by the time I got there and they said 20 minutes (a reasonable time). There was a line at the take out counter but both people were answering phones (a good problem for the business I guess, but maybe hire more people on Friday evening), so I waited another 10 minutes before I found out my order was missing an item. Oddly enough there was no wait to be seated. So my advice is to sit down, have a Cadillac Margarita and literally all of the food is delicious (my non-veg friends agree about the meat options). read more

I bought a Groupon for $20 worth of food for $10. Great deal! I ordered wings, a carne asada burrito, and chicken bowl for take-out. When I arrived, there was a mild confusion about the discount applied because I ordered online and apparently there is a discount for first-time online orders. The cashier asked me if I wanted to save my Groupon for next time since I wouldn't be able to use the online discount again. I declined it since using my Groupon would've been a far better "deal". Anyway, got home and opened to find lots of whole tostada shells w/ salsa (I guess that is their chips and salsa?). I liked these LOT. Very nice and warm and crispy! The chicken bowl was basically a lot of rice and a LOT of shredded chicken. Flavors were there, but the presentation left a lot to be desired. I had to jazz it up w/ my own bag of frozen mixed veggies from home. The wings were surprisingly delicious! Nice heat, nice tang, and still semi-crisp. The burrito was also pretty good. I kept it simple w/ just carne asada, pinto beans, rice, and hot sauce. Very good reheated, as well. All in all, I would say that I really liked the food here and would definitely try it again! It may not be "authentic" but it's a notch above Chipotle and just cuz it's Gringo-style Mexican food, doesn't mean it's not delicious. read more

I cannot count how many times I've eaten here. I'm just now writing a review because I finally have the time. Oh SuperMex where do I begin ? It's our go to Mexican food destination :) First of all they greet you and get your house chips and salsa pretty quickly. The salsa is good (not great because I like chunky salsa, not blended salsa). The chips are always either wonderfully light and crispy with great flavor or hard and stale. There's no in between with the chips. Their burritos are amazing! It's a must to order their burritos wet with red enchilada sauce. Oh their enchilada sauce is hands down my favorite enchilada sauce around! It's got the right balance of saltiness and tangy-ness. It's not spicy but full of flavor. So back to the burritos- they're of epic proportions! It's rare that I see anyone finish a burrito in one sitting because they each weigh like 5 lbs! Their tacos and enchiladas are also wonderful. Their rice also deserves an honorable mention because it light and fluffy. It's got a great flavor to it and it's got just the right amount of salt. I love eating it with fresh pico de gallo. Their menu is awesome too because they have every combination you can think of! You also have the option to order from the "lite " section or the a la carte section. I've yet to visit here during happy hour. Oh and their mini chimichangas from the appetizer section are drool worthy! The staff is always on top of it and from my experience they're always happy to be there. If you go in with a groupon make you sure mention it before you get the bill. They freak out if you mention after- not sure why. Their bathrooms have an awful sewer smell to them. It's the most unpleasant part of the while restaurant. In fact when I dine here I try not to drink so much in order to avoid the restrooms ! This is why they get 3 stars and not 4 :( read more

The customer service is horrible I mean come on now. I don't understand it, I walked in and immediately wanted to leave. I understand that when a restaurant doesn't care about you enough to make sure the area your are served your food looks sanitary to eat, I should not provide them my business and no one else should either. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE BACK. I'm surprised health department has not been called. Part of my purchase was tacos, (I almost vomited in my mouth remembering) THEY WERE NOT CARNE ASADA TACOS ITS WAS CHUMB MEAT ON A TORTILLAS. When I asked the waiter what in the world was I served they told me oh ho what you ordered Carne asada tacos, well that wasn't freaking carne asada tacos.. I've been to many Mexican places.. heck I know how to make it and this is not it, so I told the waiter the meat in the taco doesn't look like carne asada I know what Carne asada looks like and should taste like.. the meat on my taco looks like something that should not be consumed. The waiter then told me oh it's our version of tex mex I said well then you need to stop saying this is Mexican food because this is not Mexican food it is your version of a Tex Mex and even if it's text mex the meat looks like it's not from a cow. So that's my nightmare, eating out has caused me to eat more at home. The moral of the story is stop eating out cook more at home and expect more from the companies who are making money off selling you crap and not giving two shits about it take control of your hard-earned money. I've been eating in and taking out from Super Mex for several years now. I have an online account and they occasionally send me email offers. Several months ago, we went because we got a coupon for a free combo meal for AC's birthday. We had a nice meal, which was completely and utterly ruined by the establishment's failure to honor the coupon. They said that I didn't order a combo so we could not take advantage of the buy one get one free deal. I can understand that they need to make money, but my meal was actually cheaper than the combo - in other words, we were actually asking for less free food than the coupon entitled us to. We didn't return for several months, but some friends recently visited and insisted on going to Super Mex. While our company and food were good on this visit (the beef machaca was quite tasty), the service was extremely slow. When you have families with kids, quick service is critical, and waiting 15-20 minutes just to order is too long. Sorry Super Mex, I'm going to have to find another local Mexican place. read more

Overpriced Mexican food... But not that bad. It's close enough to me to justify paying a lot for a quick Mexican fix. They fry their own chips here. And rather than cutting them up, they fry the whole tortilla. I'm not sure if I like that better, but they smell really good when they come out. I feel like the serving is a lot smaller since they bring you about 5 tortillas. Which is probably good because whenever a restaurant offers free chips, I usually end up full by the time the food comes out. I got the nachos here and OMG it was such a heaping portion. There was too much topping-ness going on and not very many chips. I didn't really like that the refried beans tasted like they were from a can. But that was really my only gripe about it. I also tried their tamales before, and it's decent. They have TVs all over the place playing whatever sports are on at the moment. I'm all about authentic Mexican food, like not-so-pretty restaurants made with love from my Tia (I'm not Latina, but I'm from an area with a large percentage so I love good stuff!) The chips are large circular corn tortillas and the salsa was really yummy! I got 3 carnitas tacos + rice and beans for only $7.50! To me, it's worth it. Again... I've been to this Super Mex before but found the food to be alright both times. No wait when I've come, which is always great! It is pretty dirty though. I know they get a lot of families and large parties but there is always a "let me clean that off for you" extended and then the seats are dirty. The complimentary chips are tasty as is the salsa. I usually get the cheese enchilada and these are a-ok. Their enchilada sauce is pretty tasty. I don't love the rice and beans (pinto) so I usually go without. My husband loves their food though. Service was wonderful. It's a casual spot, nothing fancy so you can go in comfy clothes. I wouldn't make it a regular spot, but would come back if in the mood for affordable Mexican eats. There is a pretty extensive menu and they gladly do substitutions so everyone should leave happy. read more

So this place is a typical Americanized Mexican food restaurant which I typically love Americanized Mexican food. The food isn't the worst food I've had but it's far from the best. I have 2 children under 3 so I typically order out a lot. I placed an order for pick up and you can clearly tell the food was reheated vs fresh. Not only that, my sons chicken taqueria were literally pink and ice cold in the middle. Thank god I cut them in half otherwise I wouldn't have known. We just got back from our first visit at Super Mex. We were hesitant after reading all of the reviews on Yelp, but decided to give it a try anyways. We were seated quickly, had salsa, chips and waters on the table almost immediately. Our server was over shortly and our food came out very quick! The only complaint is that it took awhile for our bill to be brought to us, but other than that I can't complain about the service. Food: For the price- the food is good! I got the chicken & shredded beef tacos which were packed with juicy meat and the taco shell was grilled slightly. Delicious! My boyfriend got the chile relleno which we really enjoyed! It wasn't battered heavy but had a thicker layer of egg which allowed for the natural flavor of the pepper to come out. We we definitely try this place again, but for happy hour! read more

This place used to be 5 stars almost 20 years ago and still great sometime in the past 10 years. Since then the following has happened: 1) chips are thinner 2) salsa sucks now. Pretty sure they use a preservative now. 3) the rice is more like rice pilaf instead of exploded fluffy rice 4) the beans actually seem the same 5) the enchiladas are lukewarm. The plates should piping hot and the tortilla, cheese, and meat should be melded together. They taste separate and lukewarm. 6) the prices managed to go way up of course. We were in the mood for Mexican food on Mother's Day and the wait everywhere was crazy! Super Mex had no wait and only a handful of people were in the place. It is a seat yourself place and the guy busing tables saw that my mom is in a wheelchair and he was quick to offer some assistance. He even took our drink orders right away...thank goodness because it was so hot outside! I had the #11 carnitas with pico, guac, rice and beans and it was bland at best. The pork had no flavor and required lots of salsa to spice it up. When I have Mexican food, I expect big bold flavors and my dish was seriously lacking that. My mom had the chili relleno with rice and beans and her husband had the chicken tamale/chicken taco combo and they both really liked their food. I tried the tamales and thought that it was pretty good..... but then again, no tamale is better than what you buy from a street cart for $1. The chips & salsa were OK, we would have liked a refill but it never came. Service was slow and it took us a while before we got refills from our server. A few other staff members walked by and we sat with empty glasses but I don't know if any of them noticed this or not. Solid mexican food, friendly service, decent prices (for Irvine). This is the mexican food I grew up with; a cure for sad chipotle style mexican. Here the beans stick to the plate and have some heft to them, not some watery mess of sadness. The restaurant can be a little inconsistent depending on the day, but stick to the basic combinations of tacos/enchiladas/chili relleno/web burritos etc. and you'll leave satisfied. The chilli relleno is straight up fantastic, probably their best item, and the crunchy tacos have a fair bit of meat and the shredded beef is done quite nice. I'll be back frequently! read more
