I can count on one hand the number of bad reviews I have written in my life and I am 63 years old and have regularly purchased products online since the start of online shopping. The extremely horrendous nature of my experience with Sunsetter compels me to write this. When they sent me a defective shade, they told me the warranty did not cover it. I explained that it arrived defective - the issue did not arise after product use. After much back and forth, they agreed to send a replacement bar. When this arrived several weeks later, my very capable handyman was not able to install it because Sunsetter used a tiny, highly unusual type of screw in the existing leading bar, for which no tool was supplied to remove, so the old bar could not be removed. When I informed Sunsetter of this, they sent me a photo of a screw that bore no resemblance to the screw in the bar that was sent to me and refused to provide any assistance. So I am left with a defective shade, and am out nearly $1000, plus payment to my handyman for two visits. read more

awning was installed 955 correctly...never tacked up cords. awning is good. but when we immediately asked to have a 12" valance replacement instead of the standard sz we were taken on a wild goose chase (to put it mildly) for 9 mos with no. resolve. one glitch after another!!! calls not returned always some excuse!! if sunsetter is so inept as to not be able to provide a customer wiyh a longer valance after customer paid over $4,000 for the awning something is amiss. and if sunsetter cannot replace a valance tell the customer immediately...not 9 mos later!!! had an exasperating exoerience so much time wasted with sunsetter and nothing resolved. we would never never deal with this company again!! read more

I have owned a home with a Sunsetter awning for over 7 years. During that time frame I have called Sunsetter twice for technical assistance. Both times I ended up with a technician that advised me incorrectly and has ended up costing me over $1,000 out of pocket. First, I was having trouble with my awning rolling up correctly and was told to reverse the direction it was rolling up and that ended up ripping the material which cost me over $600 to replace. Then I called in about my remote and programming it and the gentlemen said the wind sensor needed to be re-programmed and in instructing me to remove the back of the sensor he said to pry it off with a small screwdriver. That is not correct and it ended up breaking the clasps and I had to order a new sensor as the back wouldn't stay on it. This is twice this has happened and Sunsetter needs to quit putting folks on the phone that are reading from a manual instead of being sure to verify the models of equipment you have and then they provide faulty instructions that cost you money. Further, their pricing versus ordering the same thing from Amazon is about $90 difference. One unhappy Sunsetter customer. read more

Do not buy anything from Sunsetter unless you are an engineer and know how to fix or repair their products. My free standing awning motor went out. I purchased a new fabric for it as well as the motor. They upgraded the motor and had to replace the tube that holds the fabric. The person who designed the replacement motor and tube was an idiot and made the assembly too long to fit in the fixed distance between legs. I have called and only talked to customer representatives. Their "Product Specialist" was always unavailable. For 3 weeks she was unavailable. It has now been 6 weeks since I first called and absolutely no help from them. I am currently working with my credit card company to deny the charges for both the fabric and motor (~$1600.00) because they are of no use to me. All they had to do was communicate. To be honest, I love my Sunsetter awning. It's their customer service and attitude once you have the awning. After having it 5 years, it developed a rip parallel to a bracket; which is a known defect. I reported the issue by email and then followed up with a phone call to customer service the following week. They claimed they never got my email and when I resent it (even responding to an email they sent to me), they claimed they didn't receive it. They were not helpful at all. Looks like I have to try and repair on my own. I did get the awning installed by a professional/authorized dealer, so the problem is not of my own making. read more

The basic non-motor product is good in itself. My motorized awning went out after almost 2 years and no warranty (ONLY IF YOUI USE THIER PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION COMPANY $$$). And they advertise that this can be a DIY project IE no warranty!) Customer after sales service is the worst: 1) I asked for a Costco pricing on the motorized awning that went out and was TOLD THAT THEY DON'T deal with Costco. Costco said to contact them. ??? 2) I then called them to get a quote for a new fabric and no response. 3) I asked them twice for their repairman to come out and repair the awning and they said he would call me. A week later no call. I am going to return this to Costco for a full refund and have just ordered a like shade from Smart Wings for less than half of their cost for a new one. If you really want their product, join Costco!! For the membership fee you will be able to return a defective product directly to Costco ( I believe that now it has to be installed professional?) We bought and paid for professional installation of a sunsetter retractable awning for my 96-year-old mother. Almost a year to the day we finished paying for it, we have problems. When it was installed, we were concerned about how low it was. It's been sagging ever since and we can no longer walk out on mom's patio without hitting our head on the mechanism, which no longer works properly. The fabric ripped spectacularly. Repeated attempts to get this company to honor their 10-year warranty have been met with numerous requests from them to provide descriptions of the problem, photos and videos, call this or that number. I have purchased new fabric from Sunsetter for my awning 2 times and this last one is less than 3 years old and has black mold spots in the fabric which was a Performance fabric and supposed to be warranted for 10 years. The customer service is horrible and when I spoke to a representative requesting them to honor my warranty I was treated rudely, and the rep said "We are a business not a charity.". I couldn't' believe what I heard! They said I would have to buy new fabric again. I will never purchase from Sunsetter again and I will put up a permanent patio roof. I am done with them! I hav purchased 6 awnings over the years ( 4 for me and one for my mother)) first and foremost I have never had a failure of the product With the exception of the lag bolts. Even though I pre drilled the holes to 1/4" , two of the bolts snapped inside the wall stud. Cheap quality bolts .... Secondly, their customer service is terrible. I needed 2 additional wall brackets and the wanted $90 for 2 brackets...I asked for a break since I have bought 6 awnings and they said no. secondly don't buy them through Costco as they wanted $3000. For installation.... So through Costco it was $12k for 2 13ft electric awnings. Costco usees a third party installer and in my case it was a curtain and blones installer. read more

I ordered the product from an "authorized desaler" so I would have support from. Corporate. The awnings were to take 6 weeks. After 8 weeks no awnings or communication of any kind. The authorized dealer is never in so you have to wait for a callback after 9 weeks I called customer support to see if the awnings had shipped. They refused to even provide this basic info. I will never again buy from or recommend this company. They are not BBB accredited and most BBBreviews are 1 star.​ read more

If you notice, "most" of the bad reviews for these awnings come from people that try to save an extra $500 and not go through an authorized dealer with installers that have been doing this for years and years. You get what you pay for and for stuff like this, don't be cheap and think you're going to be able to do everything yourself unless you are very capable (And if you even question that statement... you aren't). 9/10 times there would not be these bad reviews if people left it to professionals. That's like instead of buying a car for 20k you buy every piece for 18k but have to put everything together yourself with 0 knowledge of cars yet get mad when something you didn't do right turns into a bigger issue. In the fall of 2022, we called a local SunSetter authorized dealer. After meeting we told the representative that we would like some time to discuss the pricing and options available and that we would get back to them. In the meantime, Sunsetter direct started running a promotion that made the same awning much less expensive. I called SunSetter direct, and I let the representative know that I had spoken with a SunSetter authorized dealer, but mentioned that this promotion seemed to be a much better deal. The representative said it would definitely save us the most money. I told her that we would not be able to install the awning ourselves. She said, no worries, we have a company that we work with "all the time." She said that SunSetter customers had worked with this company for "years and years" and that they could install the awning for probably between $600 and $800. She gave me a phone number of this company and said the number was also on the SunSetter website. I inquired as to whether other customers had ever had any issues with the installation company, and she said, no, as far as she knew everyone had always been very pleased with their services. Based on her recommendation,and assurance, we did ultimately decide to order direct. We soon received two massive tubes and other boxes that we put in our front foyer. I called the installation company to arrange installation. This is where the trouble began. I called the number I was given by Sunsetter repeatedly and could never get an answer. I called SunSetter back to verify that I had the correct number. I was told that it was correct and keep trying. I finally got someone on the phone with the installation company and the person I spoke to said that they had no idea what I was talking about, or why I had been given their number? They said that they have not, and do not, install SunSetter awnings. Even after I called back to Sunsetter and let them know that this company said that they do not install their awnings, and never have, they still left that number up on their website. At this point, we were in a bad spot, because we were not capable of installing the awning ourselves, and could not find anyone locally that was able to do it. I called SunSetter back multiple times, as I was extremely frustrated with these huge tubes sitting in my foyer all through the holidays and into the new year. There was never any solution, and the last representative I spoke to at that time basically said, well, it's not that hard... you guys should just put it up yourselves. I'm sorry, but we did not pay thousands of dollars to be put in this situation. What kind of response is that?! We called the SunSetter authorized reseller that we originally talked to back in the beginning, and asked them about installing the awning. The representative said, this is why you buy from us, and was not keen on helping us. Ultimately that company did come down and put it up, but for an extremely exorbitant price. We ended up paying much more than what we would have if we had just gone through the authorized reseller from the beginning. I feel like we were misled by the SunSetter direct representative. I also feel like that SunSetter direct representative either didn't know, or even possibly outright lied, about the company that she said SunSetter direct buyers had used for "years and years" for installation. If this was where the story ended, most likely would not be writing this review... I would have chalked up the extra money we were out to stupid tax and moved on. After the installation of our awning, the wind sensor never worked. We were working with SunSetter customer service to try and resolve that issue, when in a matter of weeks after our awning was installed, the motor also quit working!! After many calls to SunSetter technical support and customer service, and walking through all of the steps to reset the remote and reset the awning, it was determined that the motor was bad. So now we have a bad wind sensor, and a bad motor, all within weeks of having this brand new awning drilled into our brand new brick home. SunSetter agreed to send out a new motor. This motor is not something that we can replace ourselves. I called SunsSetter direct and asked them about the installation, and they were extremely unhelpful. They said we could follow the directions on their website and install it ourselves, or we could pay someone to install it. Why on earth after all we had been through already, should we have to pay for the installation of a motor that only lasted a handful of weeks? We have not been able to find anyone able or willing to install this new motor. I went back to the authorized reseller who installed the awning, and they said they had no responsibility to us, because we did not buy through them, and that if they came out to install the replacement motor, it was going to be around $1200!! Sunsetter marketing is the best in human history, nothing else from this company is good. I ordered 2 awnings and together with it I waited my 8 weeks to receive them. After waiting the 8 weeks the order was missing 75% of the pieces, basically they just sent the lateral arms. According to the shipping company, sunsetter didn't send the awnings as they supposed; sending only 4 boxes with some hardware. I spoke with a sunsetter representative explaining the situation and learned that it will take several business days for them to investigate and then another 6-8 weeks to receive the missing parts. Of course, as I still have a little decency and respect for myself, I canceled the order and initiated a return for the few pieces of hardware I received. Now I have to deal with a return and wait until they think it is ok to return the payments I did. If this were the only awning company, I would understand. But there are many awning companies in my city willing to do whatever it takes to earn my business. Lesson learned! read more

We ordered an awning to be shipped to our home in Hawaii. You can tell right away that they attempt to package it very well, however with the amount of hands it changes throughout the shipping process, damages occurred. I emailed customer service with my concerns and they stated they would ship a new one. This was for an 18' 185lb awning from MA-HI. I tried suggesting they just send some repair parts but they insisted on sending a brand new one. The new awning just arrived and is in great shape. The package still took a beating and end caps came off. We love the awning. It works great. I purchased my 14' SunSetter from an authorized dealer just about 2 years ago. I ordered the best fabric and a bronze frame from McIntosh Windows and Doors, who are now out of business. Ive had nothing but problems. the wrong color was delivered and installed, they used 2x8's to make the awning flush with my deck. I asked over and over if it was safe to install on the edge of my deck and they kept saying yes, we do this all the time. Over the next few months I noticed the awning sagging and my deck being pulled apart. I kept sending pictures to McIntosh and they said it was "settling" it just got worse over time. I finally got them to come out and fix it and they installed a motor hoping that would appease me. last year, I had to have it taken off and spent 6K fixing the deck and installing microlam to support the weight of the awning. Just a few days ago, I was bringing it in a one arm snapped off. The metal was broken in half and some of the bolts flew off. I have no idea how it happened but I'm glad no one was out there that could have been hurt. According to sunsetter, the new arm is covered under the warranty but not the installation. The contractor they had me call sent an estimate for $600. I spent $5400 on the awning, 6K on repairs to my deck and now they want me to -ay for the repair? Honestly, I should have just purchased some of the shade cloth and put that up instead. My opinion? Too expense, company doesn't back their products, dealers close and you have zero support. JUST DON'T! I ordered a huge awning in April, 2023 directly from their website. Around June, I tried to call to get an ETA. I must have tried to call about 20 times, but no one ever answered. So I emailed them. My first few emails were pinged back to me, saying that email address wasn't viable! I tried other addresses and finally got a reply. Over numerous emails, I was ALWAYS told it would be another 4-6 weeks. I was always told it was "expedited", and then "accelerated". I finally told them to cancel it, BEFORE IT WAS EVEN MADE, as the house we wanted it for sold. I was told they'd give me $150 off. I told them no, just cancel it. Come end of July and I get a notice from Tforce Shipping that it shipped out! Say WHAT?? I thought maybe it was a mistake. A month later, they call again and say they'll bring it August 30. The guy arrives and has all of TWO boxes of the FIVE that should have arrived! On top of that, one box has the cleaning kit with all the liquids exploded- greasy crud everywhere. And the other was legs, I think. It had parts missing, according to the parts list. NATCH! So I try calling Sunsetter, but never could get through....again. Went the email route, replying to the last emails I had received from them. NO ANSWER. I finally contacted my credit card company and told them the issue. Here is what I sent to their customer service today Hello! On May 19th, I ordered an awning from your dealer in Auburn. I was so looking forward to having it. Here it is 3 months and no awning. I called the dealer ( who's been awesome) several times as he was tracking the awning. For a long time it was supposedly stuck in Los Angeles then was supposed to be delivered. Well it was lost and ordered again. Last week I called your company and was told it was shipped out that day (so three orders). Today I called the dealer and canceled the order. If you can't deliver an awning then I don't trust the warranty or any aspect of Sunsetter. The dealer's wife call you today and someone stated it would be delivered tomorrow. She then called the trucking company who said no way as pieces are still missing. Knowing this, I made the right decision. You ( Sunsetter) seem to have no clue what is going on or where products are. How come you did not change trucking companies earlier when you knew you had a problem? Yet your still selling awnings with a major transportation problem and clueless of where products are. If I had Facebook I definitely would be posting a negative review of you. Ordered an 11' motorized awning through Costco. I was originally told it would take 3-6 weeks for delivery. At 5 weeks I was told they do not have the color I chose available. Previously, I called a few times and was told the only thing holding up my order was the hood end caps and the wind sensor. I requested twice that the fabricated awing and hood be shipped now and the 2 smaller parts shipped later. I never received a response to the request. When you call them you speak to a call center rep who knows very little about the status of your order except that it is in progress. I'm going to cancel the order. solar powered EasyShade has been a big disappointment. solar panels fail and getting replaced is a long process and long wait. then the new solar panel fails a few months later. all within 2 years and less. getting service help is close to impossible since no one calls back and the I get informed of long backlog of orders. Custimer doesn't seem to matter at all. Priority seems to be sales and definitely not service. purchase date March 2022 and battery failure exactly one year later. The new replacement failed within three months. Technicians told me they get paid more for installation and much less for service calls. The company doesn't stand behind its product. read more

Purchased in May, 2004 with an accessory. Delivered with excellent instructions. I returned the accessory because I didn't like it. Customer service was fantastic thru the entire process. Nice little afternoon project to install. After about 12 years, some of the pieces for the winter cover were getting worn. I was easily able to order a new kit at what I thought was a reasonable price. May, 2023-Ordered, received and installed entire fabric. I replaced it because I changed the trim color of the house. Again, excellent customer service and instructions. I was told it could take a while to get because the company was in the process of moving to another state, but got in just under a month. On May 4th my 3 non electric sunsetter uv filtering screens were ordered. I live in Delray Beach Florida. On May 4th measuring was performed by one of your technicians. The order was placed requiring a $1039.50 deposit, which represented one-half of the total price which is $2000,00 plus. I was informed Because the UV screens had to be custom made it would take at least one month to complete the order. When the order finally arrived, it took another 3 weeks for an installation team to arrive to perform the installation, I noted that even before the installation was performed the shades were too short to complete the installation properly, There was an 18-inch gap between the screens allowing unfiltered sunlight through At that point I was informed that the maximum with of each screen was 6 feet. If I had been informed of this on May 2024 when I placed the order, I would have never authorized the job. I reported the problem to your home office. I was told "not to worry" they would send someone out to assess the issue and the problem would be corrected They dispatched a salesperson to remeasure and the problem would be corrected. Within a month another install team arrived to fix the problem. Last week the new screen was replaced. The replacement screen was of the electric type. There is no electric outlet available on my rear porch. Also, the electric-powered screen does not roll out enough to reach the floor and there is still a wide gap between the screen and the left side wall. The awning itself is great. We purchased it through Costco and an authorized dealer installed it. We love it! BUT...beware if you by accessories from SunSetter. We bought the Weatherbreaker Side - Lateral Arm online. There is nowhere on their site saying this item needs 8" of wall space on either side of the awning. Our awning is installed on almost the same length of wall so there is no extra wall space. Customer service suggested that we "either return the awning for a shorter one or add wall space to the awning wall". Ridiculous, as the awning is already installed and we sure can't add wall space to the exterior of our house. They do not refund shipping cost. You get a Return Authorization number but the cost of shipping the $208 item is on you. It's a large heavy box so I'm guessing I'll be out $30-$40 from USPS. Had a long discussion with customer service but they have a policy of not refunding shipping cost. No bueno. read more

Solar Easyshade works good until it doesn't. Purchased from Costco in Dec 2019. Solar Housing/Battery failed in April 2023. Product website states: "Our EasyShade models come standard with a manufacturer's 5-Year Limited Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. For Solar-powered models, the solar panel assembly and battery pack are warranted for three (3) years." The rep I spoke with at Sunsetter reported that the solar panel typically lasts 3-5 years with a replacement cost $170.00. Additionally, the panel is extremely difficult to replace as the motor-connector wire attached to it is impossible to tuck in behind the panel, and keep it there when sliding the panel back onto the shade - the wire comes right back out as you slide the panel onto the housing. Poorly designed replacement product and frequent costly repair. Consider other alternatives before buying this shade as the solar option is not practical for the average residential consumer. read more

I ordered four Sunsetter Easy Shades in April 2023, and received the products in June, after installation, just a couple of days later, one of the four Easy Shades was broken, the fabric panel dropped from the housing. Dreadful company. Like many other reviewers, I purchased the Sunsetter EasyShade from Costco. The external link from the Costco.com website boasts a 5 year warranty. Well, it's been just over two years and the shade stutters in both directions with small movements each time the button is depressed (it should open or close continuously with the single tap of a directional button). I contacted customer support and was told there was no warranty on record. What? You do have my account on record right? Yes. And you see that I purchased from Costco, right? Yes. And the webpage link from the Costco.com website boasts a "5 year-limited-warranty", right? Yes. Then why won't you stand by that warranty? Because there is no warranty on record, sir. So now they want me to pay $160 for a new solar panel that SHOULD be under warranty! I will attempt to return this to Costco, but it is most likely going to be a loss. Before YOU buy: Carefully read Sunsetter's full 2-page warranty, and understand how very limited it is. If the unit fails within 1 year, replacement parts are covered. After that, even if still "in warranty", you will have to pay for replacement parts, prorated from the "full retail price," plus shipping costs. Installation is not covered at all. We purchased a solar-powered Sunsetter EasyShade in 2015 at Costco. In the FAQ section of the owner's booklet we received with the shade, it states "The Solar Panel is WARRANTED FOR THREE (3) YEARS NOT TO FAIL under normal conditions ..." (their emphasis). I quickly read through the lengthy 2-page warranty, and thought this was confirmed. After 2 1/2 years, the shade would not roll up. We went through the entire troubleshooting menu at least a dozen times, then called Sunsetter. After repeating that menu, the representative told us the "good news" that the unit was "still under warranty"; she thought it was the battery/solar collector ... which we could order for the "prorated" price of a little over $160. But I thought the unit was ... still under warranty?! Turns out, the unit is REALLY WARRANTED FOR ONLY 1 YEAR (my emphasis). Years 2 and 3, she said, are prorated. When I pointed out how the FAQ is misleading, and the longer warranty a bit unclear, they eventually relented and agreed to send the unit for "only" $100, the "best they could do." We installed the replacement battery/solar collector. The shade still did not work. Sunsetter then advised it might be the motor, which it offered for the pro-rated "under warranty" special price of $160. With great effort, again, I talked them down to $100. 2 MONTHS AFTER THE BREAKDOWN, our shade is finally working again, after many hours of effort (phone calls, troubleshooting with one of us on a ladder, 2-person installation of both battery and motor), and $200 expense we had thought was covered under warranty. What I wish I had known: I have since easily found other shade manufacturers which offer a genuine 5-year warranty on the shade mechanics/electrics, and 10 years on the fabric. I also learned that Somfy, the company which manufactures the motors for most of these shades, provides a full 5-year warranty, which Somfy intends to be passed along to the final retail customer. (Wow. In Sunsetter's business model, the "in-warranty" customer pays them top dollar for a replacement motor and must return the original to Sunsetter. Sunsetter then returns the original motor to Somfy, and Sunsetter gets a new or repaired motor for ... FREE. Nice for them. ) read more

The shade itself is ok. I ordered the solar controlled system. The solar panel had to be replaced right away as it was defective. Now 2 years later the solar panel needs to replaced again. The company doesn't have any. The claim is now that they cannot get parts for them. My shade has been down for over a month and I cannot get out of my sliding door to the backyard. They have no indication as to when they will get parts for it. If anyone decides to get this product definitely do not go with the solar option. They said they are guaranteed for only 3 years. Not very earth friendly and you may be stuck in your house not being able to get out to your yard while viewing through a broken shade. read more

I had my SunSetter awning for 3 years now. The model I chose was the motorized XL 20 ft wide by 11 ft 8" projection. I opted for the LED lighting and the wind sensor option that will close the awning the event of high winds. I had MR remodeling of Bethel Connecticut do the installation. I'm glad I did since he was able to give me a greater discount then the buy direct from Factory. So the end result was $200 more for the installation for 20 foot wide unit it was well worth it. Recommend setting the Wireless wind sensor to the most sensitive position number one. I cover my awning with a winter cover and it looks great every single year. Makes my deck usable throughout the summer months highly recommend the installer and SunSetter. read more

While the frame, cloth, and armatures are fairly solid, the motor and control systems are CRAP. I have had a 20 foot motorized awning for 5 years. I have spent HOURS troubleshooting and fixing it. First the wind sensor, then the remote control, now the motor. Each time, they are nice and helpful, but the end up charging me for a part and then I have to install and deal with the problem. At least 20 hours (maybe more) have been spent plugging and unplugging the awning to attempt to reprogram their really bad design. Now, I have to wait 6 weeks for them to deliver a new motor. Meanwhile, it takes about 175 cranks to get the awning in or out. The new motor will only cost $75 (with a $25 credit if I return the old motor). That is not expensive, but what about the thousands of dollars-worth of MY TIME. HOURS upon HOURS of dealing with a badly designed product. Two years ago, I also bought a motorized EasyShade. That was broken upon arrival. I sent it back immediately. DO NOT BUY THEIR JUNK!!!! read more
