Nice tucked away place. Our server was pleasant and accommodating. The ambiance is nice. My recommendation is that this place is a good choice for a casual dinner with a few drinks when the weather is nice. The food was average overall. Our group had calamari, crab cake, crab gazpacho, tuna tartartini, and mussels, as well as scallops and the seafood mixed grill. The food was good, but not overly impressive. The prices reflect the fact this restaurant is on the water. It Is pleasant that the menu is not overloaded with fried food. I would return, but do not expect gourmet food. For the past two summers I have wanted to get out of the city just to any random town and do something, whether it's walk, drink with the locals, shop at an antique store, hike, or go to a local fair. After visiting Sunset Grille in lovely Norwalk, CT, which is basically lovely sounding in general with their nice beach and harbor views, I can finally say that I've done that. I enjoy New England a lot; being from upstate New York where federal stylings and no waterfront and the great feel that brings, I envy both New England, the east coast, and the west coast, for having the environment of water within reach. I was just out of it, but so far in life have been able to interact with plenty of people who enjoy that life that sounds so...vacationish. The upstate NY thing, it's like, I'm almost within striking distance but can't just travel on a whim necessarily. As a backlash I always said I wanted to visit Topeka, KS, just because it was the exact opposite in terms of geography of where I really desired to always vacation. After doing a round of mini-golf, a hilarious man who worked there told us of the closest alcoholic establishment, down by the marina. As we passed huge boats propped up in the large parking lot, we almost missed where Sunset was; it's one of those small shack of a restaurant/hang out, but inside is actually very clean, just kind of cramped. When we got there at 4 in the afternoon (they close fairly early around 9:30 or 10), it was packed and a local singer/songwriter was about to perform; I guess this PJ dude performs every Sunday, which takes a bit out of my fondness for the place. However, PJ played at a normal level and it made for ok background music, albeit a bit weak. I'm really not sure what you call the crowd; it must be a lot of locals because a lot of people seemed to know each other. We were all crowded by the parking lot side as the harbor views were taken away because all those tables were reserved for dinner guests. The 3 bartenders inside were serving drinks fast and furious, and the great thing is, the booze is affordable (the food is a bit pricier, most entrees were in the 20s and 30s). 6 oysters (they were extremely fresh, CT certainly has plenty of incoming seafood from their own waters) for 13 was kind of ridiculous but hey, it's vacation. But back to the crowd: all the older folks were very nice people and all the younger ones were douchebags. Especially the guys. Talk about slim pickin's for the ladies. I mean, I know I'm wearing a silly t shirt from a movie, but getting stared down 3 or 4 times before hitting the bar isn't the way to welcome anyone. What am I gonna do, ruin your tan? Step off. Everyone was local but I feel like they were fairly well-to-do; one wonders whether they ever got bored going to this same place way too often or do they have another vacation spot that they head to for the summer, even though the town they live in already is a mild vacation spot? I always wondered that. It's so kind of secluded at the end of the marina you wonder if everyone forgot about it, would it just sit there on the harbor feeling lonely? Does the place itself have that New England mystique? Does it have feelings of its own? That's what vacation does to you I guess, you give these places a sentimental value because you just experienced something you might never experience again, especially under the same circumstances. Sunset is seasonal, so I think after mid fall you might want to check what their hours or space is like during the winter months (I'm sure it's much, much less, possibly only open half the week, who knows). read more

The only reason we come here is because of the lack of choices near the marina. The worst part of the experience here is the service. They act like you are bothering them for just being there. We made a reservation for 4 this past Wednesday at 4:30. What a terrible experience. We ordered apps and drinks. When the apps arrived, we ordered our dinners. Approximately an hour later we inquired where our dinners were. Our waiter said he'd check and then came back and said we never ordered dinner. He then began to argue with us saying we were wrong and was adament that we never placed the order. CAN ALL 4 OF US BE WRONG? How arrogant and smug can one be? We asked for the check and when it arrived, the waiter still insisted that it was our fault. After a heated discussion, the manager eventually comped us for the apps and our troubles. This used to be one of my favorite places to go. But more recently prices have increased to the point of being ridiculous and the quality has definitely dropped. For example at lunch I ordered the lobster salad for $27. The salad probably had less than an ounce and a half of lobster meat in it and the rest was all dressing and greens. I've eaten here a few times over the years and most of the time the food was OK, nothing to write home about. But tonight it was down right bad, I ordered the Fisherman's Platter which was over battered and had no taste. My daughter ordered the Lobster Risotto, the chef and the owner should be embarrassed to send the dish out of the kitchen. The lobster bits where just the tip tops of claw meat(hard and tasteless) the risotto was badly cooked and the whole soggy mess was sitting in a deep pool of olive oil. SHAME ON YOU!!! My husband and I keep our boat at this marina so we come here frequently. I must say that the food has improved grealyt from 2012. I've been three times so far in summer of 2014 and have been very happy with the food. The douchey bartender from the last few years seems to gone which greatly improves the experience. Typically I'm there late afternoon for a cocktail or glass of wine and an app after a day in the sun. Small groups can typically get a table quickly if you arrive around 5pm. Oysters and clams on the half shell and served with all the expected garnishes, steamed lobster was nice and fresh, they still had a little fat in the shell which is the tell tale sign. The crab asparagus dip was yummy but certainly not good for your bikini body. Overall it's the best waterfront spot in Norwalk. Also, they frequently have live music and the sunset is beautiful. read more

For example, I ordered the swordfish tacos, with a mango salsa, and chipotle mayo. As the name would imply, there is no better place to watch the sunset on a summer evening than the Sunset Grille. But you have to really want to see it!! The food here has been described as "overpriced', but in all fairness, isn't that half the joints in Fairfield County?? The rum punch is to DIE for...if you can get a bartender to bring you one! Be sure to bring your patience. The place gets packed and is a lot of fun and I love the "behind the scenes in the marina" location. Add some live music and you can feel like you are on vacation! I really wanted to like this place because of the ambiance on our first visit but unfortunately the service and food weren't great. We were seated on a Sat night 15 mins after our reservation time (but shook that off) and our waiter Mallory was friendly and took our entire order at the same time which was great. Our appetz (i did not like the jumbo shrimp) and main all came out at a decent time. But unfortunately after that wr never saw Mallory. After our food came out, we finished it and waited 20 mins and I said okay if she comes back within 10 mins we will get one more drink but she never did. So after 30 mins of not checking on us we asked a nice boy who was clearing our dishes if he could get her so we could get our check. A few mins later our check came and we paid right away. I like judging the entire dining experience and even though to start the timing on things were good unfortunately at the end it didn't go well. I understand Saturdays are busy but perhaps a better system or less people so the ones there don't have to wait 30 mins before a server comes over at the end of a meal. read more

Stopped going to this restaurant because food was mediocre and service terrible. HOWEVER, started going back this season and am happy to report that good and service greatly improved. Of course, the view during sunset hours is fantastic! I had the Caesar Salad with grilled shrimp twice and it was wonderful. My husband had the grilled shrimp with pesto sauce over pasta and really liked it. Second time he had the pasta primavera with grilled shrimp and also enjoyed that. Service was really good and quite attentive. Try their American Mule cocktail. WOW! Will definitely go back soon. Sunset Grille may be one of the hardest bars/restuarants in the world to find. You almost get the feel they have it hidden to keep it from getting so crowded during the summer. Anyway, the place is located down in the corner of the marina. Up until about June, you actually have to navigate through boats to find it. Its a very mediocre place overall. Its get by because its a beach outdoor hangout, a rarity in fairfield country ct. The bar area itself is very small, obviously because most people perfect to sit outside on the rather large deck area. Even that gets crowded during busy times. The staff seems very indifferent here. Its the typicaly early 20s girls who give you a blank stare when you ask for anything out of the norm. And as the other guy said, there is a mildy "who are you," type feel about this place from time to time. The food is major letdown. Very average, not as good as sono seafood across the inlet. And very pricey. CAn take a LONG time to get what you want on a busy day. And there is only one bathroom for each sex in this place, so again during busy times lines can form for that also. All in all its a good place to go for a drink on a nice day near the beach. But food is overpriced, and service is not that great. 3 out 5 stars. read more

What a perfect day and perfect lunch. Just went out with 12 people for company lunch and sat outside under the umbrellas. Wait staff was effiicient, friendly and service was great. Food was plentiful, served as described. Found the lobster roll had big chunks of meat on a 6" hot dog roll, fresh meat. No one had a bad meal and we basically had something from each of the sections. Enough variety for even the pickiest eaters. After we were told the wait would be an hour and a half we were discouraged, but it was such a great night we all decided that it was better to wait at this great venue, than head back to town. The wait was pleasant, with drinks and appetizers. We were seated in an hour and enjoyed a spectacular sunset. Scallops, halibut and stuffed sole were all consumed with delight and followed by apple pie and a cheesecake with fruit and crumbs. All good! A great destination. Considering we are a coastal community, there isn't much waterfront dining in the area. Sunset Grille is one of the few choices. It gets pretty crowded as you can imagine. I prefer it for lunch, although it has a very vibrant "happy hour" scene for the sunset. The service can be spotty and I've been disappointed with my dinner selections, which is probably why I will stick to lunch on a beautiful sunny day. This is a great casual place to enjoy outdoor dining. However be prepared to wait up to 2 hours on a weekend night if you don't have reservations. The staff is friendly but when the place is packed (weekend) don't expect amazing service. The frozen Pina Colada was the worse I ever tried but the bartender was nice and replaced it with a frozen Margarita that was OK. If you're looking for a perfect fine dining experience this isn't the best choice...However, if you you're looking for a vibrant seaside atmosphere with above average food you'll be pleased. I've been here several times and have enjoyed it. Casual seafood, local band playing (not overwhelming volume) good cocktails, cold beer, etc. You'll have some Fish and Chip's or a Lobster Roll or some Clams on the half shell and you'll pay a fair price. Well Yelpers, this takes the cake, if there was a no star rating I'd give it. I went tonight with friends to celebrate our good friend's retirement. We ordered a couple bottles of wine and dinner which was nice, but true to form, the wait staff sent over "Sassy" to kick us out after we paid our bill and while we were finishing our last glass of vino. Just the worst place for customer service in the area. Too bad, this location is so nice but really? I let "Sassy" know we always comment on Yelp about the places we frequent and now I know why she calls herself "Sassy" and not classy. If you totally like being told to leave, visit here because this is the third time I've spent over two bills and then when my bill is paid they kick us out. The crazy part of this is it is a Wednesday night, no one is waiting on tables and there were 4 other empty tables near us. Just plain nasty. It ruined a really nice evening, there was 6 if us and we were mellow guests. I get it if you have a line waiting but there was no one waiting and it was only after 8 pm.
