The parking spots are very close and there are only two speakers that work outside of the vehicle. Although I lived in a city with a drive-in for 16 we never went due to the part of town it was located in. This drive in however feels like an all- American home run. We came with our neighbors who come regularly. We got in line outside at 6:26 so that we could get a good spot in the yellow area for coffee up trucks. We brought pillows and blankets and I'm the back of the trucks, under the stars and beneath the light bugs, the world seems simple and not so complicated. Enjoyed the salute to America before the show started and the kids loved the playground while we were waiting for it to get dark. The snacks were reasonable - my fav is the $1.75 corn dog and the cherry vanilla Dr Pepper - yum. The first movie started at 8:57 and there were previews between the first and second movie. The overall experience was fabulous and I enjoyed the experience of "Top Gun maverick" at the drive in . I didn't miss the fancy theater chairs or supreme sound - outside in the fresh air was cozy for me and we will be back soon ! read more

EDIT: My original review below still stands, however, I would like to add some things since I went here recently for the first time in years. 1. They interrupted the last movie (they usually have double features) with a brief message saying that the concession stand was closing shortly. They should NEVER interrupt the movie. Ever. I understand they wish to make money, but not at the expense of annoying movie-goers. 2. The audio they broadcast via loudspeaker and the one to your radio is out of sync. If it's hot and you have a window open you'll hear an annoying slapback echo effect. The only way to combat it is to close your window. I suspect that the theatre is piping the audio to the loudspeaker via a wire and then the audio that you hear in your car is by radio waves. They might be using a very long wire which causes a delay. I think the way to combat this annoying issue would be to send the audio feed to the loudspeaker by radio: i.e., the sound comes out from the projector, audio goes via radio transmitter to cars, the same radio transmission would be fed (via radio waves, not cable!) to a receiver to the loudspeaker where an amplifier would take the incoming radio reception and amplify it for the loudspeaker. This would ensure that the audio feeds would be in sync. 3. There should be a longer intermission between films. It's part of the experience at drive-ins to get food at the concession stand. We were the first ones to get food and we barely had a chance to get our food and get back to the car before the film started. Actually it already started but thankfully the credits kept us from missing anything. 4. What's up with the guy asking for receipts at the concession stand? The owner/manager would ask to see your receipt upon giving you the food. You JUST paid for the item at the register (and got your receipt and moved a little to receive the food at the end of the counter) and he's four feet away and has a duplicate receipt already. It was inane. He made the customer behind us rifle through his pockets and wallet to produce a receipt and all the customer was buying was a candy bar and a soda. Give me a break. They need to drop the whole double receipt business. It's odd and annoying. 5. There's a light on a building directly across the street from the drive-in that shines under the screen. They can't block all the street lights but any under, around or above the screen should be entirely blocked off. A few sheets of sealed particle board (spray painted black) would fix this annoying problem. Or talking to the owner of the business across the street... -- Original review: This is a great drive-in located in Aurora, Missouri which is off highway 60 and is basically a direct drive from Springfield and Joplin. It's worth the drive if you're wanting to watch a movie in the outdoors like you did when you were a kid. I prefer watching films in high-end movie theatres (i.e., digital surround sound) but there's something about going to see a film at a drive-in. It's great for kids and teenagers. And for adults it has a lot to offer too. The concession prices are very reasonable and the food is good for what it is. Why not reminisce a little and go see a film there? read more

Sunset Drive In Theatre - Drive-In Theater Near Me - Aurora, Missouri

We always have a great time! Is everything perfect, no. However, with some planning you don't really run into any issues. * Arrive early if you want a specific spot. You can't expect to show up right when they open and get the front row on a super popular weekend. They have been very open that people have been getting in line early. We got in line at 5:30 and got a front row spot. * While we would like to support the Drive-In with food sales, we know that on busy nights it will take way too long so we bring our own dinner; which is awesome that they allow. Again, arrive early and it probably won't be an issue. * Security staff was very nice and helpful. We were concerned that kids would continue running around and playing in the playground equipment. The staff did a great job asking kids to get off of the equipment and sit down during the movie. * The audio seemed very low on the speakers. We will plan on bringing a radio with us from now on so that we will be able to hear better when not in the car. There are no speakers by the screen so the front row can actually be too quiet depending on the movie. Toy Story 4 was too quiet but Aladdin was fine. * Communication could be better from the Drive-In about capacity. They should really post updates throughout the evening on the number of spots left and especially when all spots are taken. My only real complain is that the light on the sign out front by the road is very bright and shines in your eyes when sitting in the front row. Hopefully they can find a very inexpensive and easy way to fix this, shouldn't be too hard to do and would really help. We are fortunate to still have a Drive-In in the area when so many have closed. Great family fun! Very affordable as well as more fun than a theatre. Why go anywhere else? We watched the LEGO movie when it first came out here and have been back many times since. Last night we watched Solo. Then left. The price is cheap enough we often come and not stay for the second. There is a park that the kids can play in if you come early. The snack bar has many things, of course popcorn. I like the nachos. You get a huge amount of cheese. The pretzel is good with cheese too. The employees are always polite. I guess it just depends what movie is out but sometimes there will be a kid film followed by an adult movie. Kids can sleep through the second feature as it will be late. Find out what's playing online beforehand on there website. Remember to bring insect repellent. And camping chairs. No one sits in the car. There is a loudspeaker playing the movie. You can tune in on your fm radio if you like as well. Just set up your chairs behind your car and enjoy the film! read more

We love the Sunset Drive-In and have been watching movies there for almost 20 years. Go for the drive-in experience and we are lucky to have one in this area. You can listen to the movie on your car's stereo or sit outside under the stars and enjoy 2 movies at a great price. We have brought food there and have also brought in our own, but maybe the best part is when we bring a little grill and fix our own right there. The sound system is different than what is at the other theaters, but we also use our MP3 players or iPods (with earphones) and pick up the radio station that the Sunset uses for the movie sound. They also have free WiFi. The website, facebook page and answering machine are updated every week with the movies showing on Fri., Sat., and Sun. It is truly is fun for all ages. I've g. 3. The hatchback rule. I've always had a car with a hatchback so I can take m one to this place a lot of times over the years & always loved it but we went last night & now I'm not sure I'll be going again for a few reasons. 1. The bathroom situation sucks horribly. Its very small & cramped & the line is extremely long. They could fix this issue by adding more port a pottys or maybe in the off season they could redo them. 2. The concessions is hot as Satan's toenails & I feel bad for those kids working in there. There's windows so I'm not sure why they can't just open them y family to the drive in & be comfortable. Its one of the things I look at when buying a car is how comfortable it will be for the drive in. I've never had them say anything to me about my hatchback before so idk if it was just because I wasn't parked on the front row by the playground or what but they need to either figure out a different parking arrangement or some type of way to help with it. My hatch barely comes higher than the roof of my SUV but they wanted us to hold it down thru 2 movies! Seriously?? If I would've known it would be a problem I would've just brought bungee cords or rope or something to hold it down. There's no way for it to just stay in a certain position, its either up or down. They could even make more money by selling rope or something to tie it down instead of coming with an attitude about it. The way the guy approached my son about the hatch irritated me. Saying, "you gotta hold it down, they told you before the movie started". There's a certain way you talk to people, especially my kids! He came around a few times always with an attitude about it during to course of 2 movies. The last time he said something I told him that I've came many times over the years & its never been a problem & told him it was ridiculous that they expected us to hold it down for 4 hours. He said something to the effect of other people paid to watch the movie but he said it like I didn't too. I brought me & my 3 kids, 6, 8 & 16 & between admission & concessions spent over $50 so for him to act like that really irked me. 4. They should have more speakers so you can actually hear the movie. I would give this more stars based on past experiences but I just can't now. They're making enough money to do some updating & just a little imagination to think of something as simple as ripe when such a large percentage of your paying customers come in SUVs. I did see some people looking really comfortable in the back of a pick up truck so maybe that will be my next vehicle but that still wouldn't solve the other issues. It wasn't necessarily the rule it was the attitude behind it. I think from now on if I want to be in maximum comfort I'll just watch movies at home once they come out on DVD. I'm sad to write this because I love the drive in & waited all summer for something good to come & then ended up not enjoying myself so it was a let down for sure. read more
