I had never been to the Moxie before, but I decided to go today because I heard that they had a free showing of The Lego Movie and thought me and my son would have a great time. The employees were friendly as we entered the foyer and helped us select our seats; however, they then informed us that "because it's a free showing masks are required". I paused and considered this information. I walked away in frustration, but ended up going back to ask for clarification questions. I got confirmation that if I PAY for a ticket to watch a movie, I would have the freedom to not wear a mask, but when there's no MONEY involved, apparently the science changes and suddenly masks are required to save everyone's lives. I won't start a debate over the validity of masks on this review, that's not the point. The issue I have is that they "recommend" masks for paying customers and "require" masks for non-paying customers. I imagine they'd be hard pressed to explain the "science" behind that decision. Again... employees were pleasant; policies... not. I will never return. read more

Wow - The Moxie is truly the best cinema experience in Springfield if the movie selection suits you. I hadn't been to the new location until I came here for a movie this past weekend with some friends of mine, and I had such a good time, I think I could have sat and watched another one if time had permitted. I sat in for The Grand Budapest Hotel after watching previews for several films that I ACTIVELY WANTED TO SEE, as opposed to enduring a somewhat nonsensical thread of cinematic barf. An amazing aspect of The Moxie is its dedication to real, true businesses - right down to its concessions options. Gourmet chocolate bar with orange peel? Yup. Izze soda? Got it. Wine? Wait. Hold the phone. There's WINE here? I can have WINE with my excellently hip indie film? Someone snatch me up a blanket made of alpaca wool and let's do this thing! And the prices are refreshingly NOT blasphemous, as opposed to chain cinema concession stands. The new Moxie is somehow just the old Moxie on a different street - as in, it retained its upbeat, modern, blocked red-and-black scheme in the best possible way - with a few new art installations thrown in. The new auditoriums are even better, though. They're bigger yet cozier and the red seats (which are super comfy on your buns, by the way) remind you where you are even after you're away from the lobby. You're at The Moxie, and you're enjoying yourself. The staff seems great, too. The college-ish girl running the register at the front popped into the theater before our show began and gave a short little talk about another movie coming up, which was not insignificant in the sense that it really showed that this theatre is loved. As Ebert and Roeper would say (because they review movies and stuff, get it? Ha ha ha...): two thumbs up! read more

My wife and I love the Moxie Cinema. One auditorium Seats around 100 and one around 48. We are Moxie Members we support the Moxie Cinema. They show independent movies, movies that the regular theaters don't show and foreign films. They also have movies from the 1950s ~ 2000s that are must see movies. It is a wonderful environment and I highly recommend. They serve popcorn, wine, beer and soda as well as candy and Askinosie Chocolate. read more

Great place if you like hard-to-find movies, and then listening to people talk throughout the entire thing. Seriously, 9 times out of 10 it's the absolute worst crowd you could ask for. Pretty sure the guy behind me was chewing sunflower seeds for the last hour of the movie. And the staff will make absolutely no effort to ensure that human adults will act like human adults and stay quiet throughout the movie. I'd rather sit through Gone With the Wind in a room full of infants than any given movie here with adults, because at least then I could say the infants don't know any better. Only reason I'm going here is because I determined to watch all Oscar nominees this year, and unfortunately this about the only place you can. As soon as the Oscars are over, though, I'm never coming back. read more

The new location for the Moxie has been, in my option, a huge success. The building layout makes more sense now--before, at the old location, you had to park behind the building (unless you could find street parking) and walk around the block to enter. Now you have the option of street parking, garage parking, or there's a parking lot directly across from the entrance. The inside of the theater itself has greatly improved, as well. It is much larger, the seats are a very comfortable, leather-like material, and the cup holders have two sizes built into it--one size that fits a glass bottle and a wider ring that fits a stemless wine glass. I'm much appreciative of small touches like these. This leads me to my next point, which I love about the Moxie: they sell alcohol. Forget popcorn (although their popcorn is great, too)--I cannot express enough how nice it is to treat yourself to a glass of wine or a beer while enjoying a movie. They also sell high-quality chocolates (ChocoLove is the main brand, I believe) in two sizes, and their concession prices are very reasonable. Wine is $5-7, beers are $3-6 or so. On a recent trip here, a friend and I got tickets for Magic in the Moonlight, the newest Woody Allen film. We showed up around 5ish minutes before the movie started, and there were only 4 seats available after we got our tickets. Unfortunately, there was a line waiting behind us, so some were turned away :(. When we entered the theater, there were only a few vacant seats that were all scattered. We were prepared to sit apart from each other, but a row of extremely kind people moved over to make room for the two of us to sit together. Also, a Moxie worker came in and brought two fold up chairs for two gentlemen who came in after us and couldn't find seats--true hospitality, in my mind. I cannot boast about the Moxie enough. It shouldn't be fair to compare it to other theaters in Springfield because they are not one and the same, but if you have visiting guests from outside of Springfield and they are looking to go see a movie, your first recommendation should definitely be here! read more

I really like this place, mostly due to the fact that it's the only theater for hours in any direction that plays good films. Sure, there are other big theaters in the area, but they all play only major blockbuster Hollywood type films. The Moxie is an oasis in a bland and boring Springfield, Missouri, and it is a very refreshing change. The first thing I like is the staff that run the theater. They are all very friendly and knowledgeable about film, and seem to be truly dedicated to what they are doing. They aren't your typical teenage loser-types that seem to work at all the other movie theaters, who don't really care about what is being shown. I also met the owner Mike, who is a very cool dude and very dedicated to his theater. He really knows what he is talking about, and I can have a genuine conversation with him without a feeling of condescension, like I have with some film geeks. The screening rooms themselves are very nice, one having nicer chairs and a slanted arena, and the other having older, more uncomfortable chairs and an overall smaller room. They play the more popular, better selling films in the big theater, and I am always impressed by the projection quality. While I'm still a dedicated fan to 35mm film projection, I am accepting that they are switching to digital projection, especially if it saves them money. Popcorn is delicious here, and I love the selection of beer and soda. The fact that they sell beer is pretty awesome by itself, and it's not just Budweiser or Coors crap. Fritz soda is delicious as always, and a good addition. Restrooms are clean and well maintained. I also like the little waiting area they have out front that is tastefully decorated and a nice place to hang out before the movie. While I've certainly been to bigger and better independently run theaters in major cities throughout America, I really, really appreciate The Moxie and what they do for the locals. They provide something that was not available for a long time in the area, and they do it very well. I give a lot of respect for everyone that works there, and of course the owner. Love, love, love The Moxie. It's basically the only theatre in town I can go to and really enjoy watching a movie. I don't have to worry about giggling teens making an ungodly amount of noise. Not to mention the quality of the films shown is amazing. I was especially glad they were able to add another screen. I have to admit I wasn't sure if a small arthouse theatre would make it here in Springfield, MO, but I have been pleasantly surprised and am extremely grateful that they are still going and growing. The Moxie is a little island of culture in the heart of the cinematic wasteland that is Springfield, Missouri. Or at least it is at the moment. Until the Moxie came along, there was nowhere at all to see art films, independent films, the occasional Miyazaki animé, documentaries, and things like that. Over thirty cinema screens in this town, and they were all either mass-market or second-run. But then came the Moxie, and to my surprise they have managed not only to sustain themselves, but to afford to move into a new location in October! Through a series of short films on their website, they show where they are moving, and give an idea of what the new theater's layout will be. Modern movies come on at least two reels. Therefore, in most modern theaters, two or more projectors work to show a movie in tandem--the second one coming on as the first one stops. The Moxie only has the one film projector, projectors being expensive--so there is a ten-minute intermission in the middle of each movie as they change reels. This may seem a little strange at first, but it actually works in the Moxie's favor. It's nice to be able to take a "bathroom break" in the middle of the movie and not have to worry about lasting all the way through the full length of the film. (It will be nice when they are in their new location and have more than two toilets for the whole theater, however!) The Moxie's "cinebar" sells some alcoholic beverages in addition to soft drinks. The prices are a little high, but movie concession prices always are--and I actually feel better about shelling out for overpriced food and drink from the Moxie since I know I'm supporting "the little guy" instead of a soulless chain megaplex. (Of course, the downside to this is that, unlike at those megaplexes, my conscience genuinely pangs me when I consider trying to sneak stuff in!) Also, the Cinebar is the only place in town I know of where I can obtain Fitz's root beer from St. Louis, which is some of the best root beer ever made. There are only a few downsides to the place, that are why it doesn't get the fifth star from me. First of all, the seats it currently has are really uncomfortable. Apparently they came from some old live theater somewhere, and there's a lot of history to them and stuff, but I don't care--they're just a pain to sit on, and they don't have holders for drinks. I expect they'll probably be moving to the small auditorium in the Moxie's new digs, as I don't think they would want to waste their investment in them. I hope the chairs they get for their larger auditorium are more comfortable. Another minor annoyance is that the floor of their current auditorium is flat, not sloping forward. This makes it a bit more likely that the head of the person in front of you will be in your way, and also that you'll have to look up a bit more to see the screen than you would in another movie house. And finally, they don't show enough of the kind of "art" films that I would be interested in seeing. There really needs to be more Hong Kong action stuff and animé in order for me to find a reason to attend more regularly. I will revisit the Moxie with a new review once they have moved to their new digs. Hopefully they will be successful in growing their audience after the move. I am slightly worried in light of the new mega-megaplex being built by Park Central Square. Will having all those additional screens mean some of the existing megaplexes will be able to devote screens to more art films and steal the Moxie's raison d'etre? Or will some of the existing 'plexes just go out of business or switch over to second-run and the balance remain the same? Time will tell. read more

This is my favorite movie theatre. It is an intimate theatre with limited seating but don't let that deter you. What they lack in size they more than make up for in friendliness, quirkiness and charm. The theatre owners are both amazingly friendly. They have a great selection of Missouri-brewed beers and take pride in selling only beer made within the state! Their candy, popcorn and soda selection is equally impressive, especially considering the size. There are two unisex bathrooms at your disposal and ample parking. Also interesting is that they showcase local art in the entryway and hallway leading to the concession stand. Some of it is even for sale. They are moving locations later this summer (2008) and are adding another theatre and getting overall larger digs so this review is going to have to be updated in the future. If you like independent films then why haven't you checked out the Moxie yet? No one in this area plays the types of films they offer! And you get to drink while watching them... it's a win-win situation! read more

The Moxie is easily my favorite theater in town. The movies are great, especially the independent or foreign films that won't be shown in the larger theaters. But the main reason that I love the theater are the people that work there. I have had numerous conversations with the people where we talk about different films, why we like them or what we thought, and they have given me some really great advice on movies to see at home. I used to love the Moxie, they would consistently push the edge. My wife an I were here every week and sometimes 2-3 times a week. Since it was sold to a non-profit group they seem to be scheduling films by committee and they have suffered for it. In the past year or two they've also started showing some films after or at the same time they were in the bigger local theaters. A specific example of a complaint is The Stieg Larssen / Lizbeth Salander trilogy. When The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo came out, the old owners had it for over a month. When The Girl That Played with Fire and Girl That Kicked the Hornet's Nest were release they had them each within a month of each other and each for only 1 week. It's like now they're afraid they might offend someone. I still love the ambiance and the staff is top notch. I check every week to see what's showing, but find myself just staying at home instead. read more

I've never seen a movie I didn't like at the moxie. They have a fantastic selection unlike Hollywood or Campbell and its downtown location is great for dinner or coffee pre/post movie. (They let me take my coffee in the theater with me!) The seats are so comfy and the employees are always very personable with smiles. read more

The Moxie is one of my favorite local establishments. They play movies you usually can't find anywhere else in the Ozarks. The employees are friendly, and I love that they personally introduce each movie. The seats are comfortable. The location is great. They serve alcohol. Movies are just $6 on Tuesdays. Plus, they have loyalty cards, so you can get free tickets if you come somewhat often. If you like movies, you'll love the Moxie. read more

i moved away a year ago but i still miss The Moxie!!! i still subscribe to their little email newsletter about the upcoming shows. i sigh and read and miss. i saw Running With Scissors here with one of my dearest friends. the price of the tix was well worth it and always is! one of my BFFs and i would go here for our regular "Moxie Movie Date Night". it didn't matter what was playing because we knew that it would be worthy. we knew we could go to Nonna's afterwards to dissect whatever movie we just saw. i saw The Dixie Chicks Shut Up and Sing here and it was GREAT! i love this place and wish the city i live in now had a Moxie of it's very own. is there a better name for an indie movie theater than The Moxie? this place kept me from hurting people while living in that cultural wasteland also known as Springbilly! :D i never minded paying a little extra for a soda or just the ticket price. the owners are just made of awesome and friendly. love you Moxie! read more

I love the Moxie and view it as the best theater in Springfield. It shows movies you would not have the opportunity to see anywhere else locally. I like the smaller theaters so long as I don't have to sit too close to the front. The staff are friendly and helpful. Parking is convenient in that you can park in the attached parking garage and enter directly into the theater without going outside. read more

Open since last fall, Moxie doesn't disappoint when it comes to movies. I recently saw "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and found it to be one of the best movies I'd seen recently. The Cinebar offers beer, wine, the best popcorn in town (complete with custom seasonings), delicacies from a local bakery, fun sodas and more! I'm in love. Seriously did not expect to enjoy my visit to the Moxie even half as much as I did! I expected a shabby place that was so hip it would absolutely get in its own way. While they show a range of independent films and their concessions could be described as a collection of pretentious beverages, the Moxie is absolutely fantastic! I felt welcome and comfortable and just honestly delighted in a way that is rare for me at any place of business, including a movie theater. I went with friends to watch the Amy Winehouse documentary "Amy" and I was so pleased with the comfortable, modern theater and the audience of fellow fans - no frustrated children out past their bedtimes, no loud talkers, no flashing smartphone lights during the film. After enduring all of those things at MOST movies, I felt like I was in a dream! Many moviegoers were enjoying beer and everyone was dutifully recycling their empties in the provided receptacle after the film ended. The sound system was great, not too crazy loud but it sounded excellent. It was cold even on a 90 degree evening in July. Like another reviewer mentioned, I didn't even mind sitting through the trailers because they were movies I actually want to watch! That pretty much sums it up. This might not be to everyone's taste but it's exactly to my own and I have complete confidence I will return enough to fill my M.U.M.P.S. reward card in a few months' time! read more
