Specifically, this included…read morecompletely redone kitchen, bathroom, closets, living space, etc. I performed an exhaustive search for the right contractor and Michael exceeded all the others by far. Here is why: 1. He has a background as an engineer and is keenly focused on precision, taking immense pride in his projects. This means everything is measured to the T and the work is tastefully done. You really want someone with a sharp eye for the details and that was evident throughout the project. For example, Michael spent an entire day taking me on tours of his other projects (with permission from his other clients of course). This way I could see his work up close and also gather ideas for my own project. I particularly liked a radiator cover I saw at one place, and Michael custom designed two for me as well. (Pics attached) 2. He has integrity and remains accountable even after the last bill is paid - also every additional cost is communicated in advance so you can approve or discuss. No surprises with Michael. For example, after the project was over, I had moved in, and Michael had moved onto another project, I noticed a small crack in the crown molding that Michael and his team had installed. This was due to the intense heat in the apartment as the radiators cranked up for the winter months, with temps exceeding 80 degrees. As soon as I let Michael know, he came back within the same week and addressed the problem at no extra charge. I thanked him for coming and he said "no need to thank me, it is our obligation." There are so many more examples and to me, that is an impressive level of integrity in a tough business, and shows how much Michael cares deeply about the outcome of his projects. 3. He is in constant communication. I am very hands-on and used WhatsApp to communicate with Michael and his team on a daily basis. For example, I couldn't be there to pick out the grout to be used in the bathroom tiling, but had an idea that I wanted it to match with the grey tile on the bathroom floor. Before purchasing and applying, Dan (Michael's son) sent me a WhatsApp message with a picture of the grout they suggested for purchase next to a sample of the tile that was used for the bathroom floor. I was able to make the decision while from my desk at work. Depending on how involved you want to be, the team definitely accommodates. This way you can view the progress on a daily basis and be involved in as many decisions as you want to be. 4. It's a family business. Michael has brought his wife (Jenny) and his son (Dan) into the business. They are a close knit team and tirelessly together to make sure the job gets done. Each of them have unique strengths that they bring to the table and, to me, this personal touch just made the experience that much better because I had the assurance that everyone was always on the same page and always communicating. 5. He takes you shopping. One Saturday, Michael took me shopping to help me decide on all of the materials. I did not have to buy on that day, but I ended up picking out almost everything because the prices at the places he brought me could not be beat, not to mention the options were plentiful. I had used Pinterest to build a concept and this helped guide me throughout the day. With Michael's help, I ended up selecting: all bathroom and kitchen tiles, subway tiles, granite countertops, kitchen sink, kitchen appliances (fridge, range, microwave, dishwasher), air conditioner, kitchen cabinets, bathroom sink and mirror). Some other things like the toilet, light fixtures and door handles I purchased off Wayfair. But it was such a relief to get the main things done. I am so glad with the wonderful renovation Hakka Contracting did for my bathroom, kitchen, floors, and walls. They are very passionate about their work. I originally was only going to renovate my bathroom, kitchen, and paint my walls however they recommended that I add wood floors which I am so happy with. Their prices are great and they are honest. I don't know how he does that, but I insist on re-posting because I feel you need to hear about my experience before deciding on something as important as a contractor for your home. For starters, Hussein Hussein of Goldman Home Improvement is NOT LICENSED to conduct home renovations in NY State. The license number he listed on his contract is not only expired; it was never a general contractor's license, it was a SALES license. NYS is cracking down on sales people pretending to be GC's, so his license will never be renewed. I urge you to call 311 and check for yourself if you are considering hiring this company. After working with him for almost 4 months I can attest: While Hussein clearly has a gift for sales (he could sell ocean water to a fish!), he lacks the basic knowledge of how a home works structurally; he's only capable of doing the surface aesthetic stuff. For example, I asked him to create tray ceilings in my bedrooms, and showed him many pictures of what a tray ceiling looks like. He removed the ceiling beams ... and then he obviously had no clue what to do next!! He kept staring at the ceiling, then looking at me, then back at the ceiling. Finally, he uttered: "There is no way to reinforce the beams. I cannot guarantee the ceiling will not fall in on you." I kid you not, these were his actual words!!! The contractor I hired to finish the job confirmed that, sure enough, had Hussein finalized my apt, the ceiling would have indeed buckled and fallen in!!! Additionally, Hussein could care less about the efficiency of your home (even though HE was the one who insisted I put in central AC instead of mini-splits, he refused to insulate the whole apartment, despite it being on my dime); he won't even consider doing anything that's out of the norm (I asked him to add soundproofing--again, at my expense--he absolutely refused); he uses the cheapest, unqualified trades (his plumber pitched the plumbing away from the drain, so the water has to travel against gravity!!!); and he uses only cheap materials (he works exclusively with Floor and Decor). When I hired Hussein to conduct a complete gut of my Brooklyn apt, I made the huge mistake of paying him a substantial portion up front ($50,000). After 3.5 months, he had not put in a new kitchen, new bathrooms, or new laundry room. He never replaced my floors, doors, windows or fireplace. He did not deliver central air conditioning as promised, nor did he upgrade my electric panel. He completed about 8% of the scope of work items outlined in the contract, but retained 45% of the payment, and refuses to refund me. My attorney tells me I have a solid case of breach of contract. Worse: THE FEW THINGS HUSSEIN COMPLETED WERE EXECUTED SO POORLY, IT ALL HAD TO BE DEMOLISHED AND RE-DONE. The tray ceiling had to be completely reconstructed and reinforced. The skylight he installed leaked heavily at the first rain, and had to be replaced. The hatch ladder he installed makes it impossible to access my roof -- the whole point of the ladder -- without being an olympic gymnast!! The walls he framed were wobbly. And Hussein instructed me to NOT tell the electrician -- the guy who was upgrading my electric panel -- that I'd be adding a washer, dryer, dishwasher, and air conditioning "because he will charge too much money". Seriously?? How does one upgrade the electrical panel without communicating ones electric needs to the electrician? When I confronted him on these issues, he reacted with mercurial temper--HE QUIT! So I was forced to bring in a qualified contractor mid-project to un-do all the damage Hussein had done and start over -- effectively DOUBLING my renovation budget and timeline! And now I'm mired in a lawsuit. Spare yourself the nightmare, go elsewhere!!

Other contractors were reluctant to change the layout and were unwilling to accommodate our requests. From the get go Jose simply said, "we will get it done " and he delivered. The reviews turned out to be fairly accurate and I was glad that I chose him to be my contractor. It was refreshing to deal with a contractor who is a stand-up guy (his subcontractors said so as well which is always a good sign), provides good service (above and beyond) but also gets the job done. He and his workers did an excellent job installing flooring and painting in some rooms, redid a fireplace, and finished my garage. The work was stellar and he provided good guidance and suggestions along the way. I'm already looking to work on more projects with him.
