Michael and his team completed a gut renovation of my Manhattan Co-op. Specifically, this included completely redone kitchen, bathroom, closets, living space, etc. I performed an exhaustive search for the right contractor and Michael exceeded all the others by far. Here is why: 1. He has a background as an engineer and is keenly focused on precision, taking immense pride in his projects. This means everything is measured to the T and the work is tastefully done. You really want someone with a sharp eye for the details and that was evident throughout the project. For example, Michael spent an entire day taking me on tours of his other projects (with permission from his other clients of course). This way I could see his work up close and also gather ideas for my own project. I particularly liked a radiator cover I saw at one place, and Michael custom designed two for me as well. (Pics attached) 2. He has integrity and remains accountable even after the last bill is paid - also every additional cost is communicated in advance so you can approve or discuss. No surprises with Michael. For example, after the project was over, I had moved in, and Michael had moved onto another project, I noticed a small crack in the crown molding that Michael and his team had installed. This was due to the intense heat in the apartment as the radiators cranked up for the winter months, with temps exceeding 80 degrees. As soon as I let Michael know, he came back within the same week and addressed the problem at no extra charge. I thanked him for coming and he said "no need to thank me, it is our obligation." There are so many more examples and to me, that is an impressive level of integrity in a tough business, and shows how much Michael cares deeply about the outcome of his projects. 3. He is in constant communication. I am very hands-on and used WhatsApp to communicate with Michael and his team on a daily basis. For example, I couldn't be there to pick out the grout to be used in the bathroom tiling, but had an idea that I wanted it to match with the grey tile on the bathroom floor. Before purchasing and applying, Dan (Michael's son) sent me a WhatsApp message with a picture of the grout they suggested for purchase next to a sample of the tile that was used for the bathroom floor. I was able to make the decision while from my desk at work. Depending on how involved you want to be, the team definitely accommodates. This way you can view the progress on a daily basis and be involved in as many decisions as you want to be. 4. It's a family business. Michael has brought his wife (Jenny) and his son (Dan) into the business. They are a close knit team and tirelessly together to make sure the job gets done. Each of them have unique strengths that they bring to the table and, to me, this personal touch just made the experience that much better because I had the assurance that everyone was always on the same page and always communicating. 5. He takes you shopping. One Saturday, Michael took me shopping to help me decide on all of the materials. I did not have to buy on that day, but I ended up picking out almost everything because the prices at the places he brought me could not be beat, not to mention the options were plentiful. I had used Pinterest to build a concept and this helped guide me throughout the day. With Michael's help, I ended up selecting: all bathroom and kitchen tiles, subway tiles, granite countertops, kitchen sink, kitchen appliances (fridge, range, microwave, dishwasher), air conditioner, kitchen cabinets, bathroom sink and mirror). Some other things like the toilet, light fixtures and door handles I purchased off Wayfair. But it was such a relief to get the main things done. So to sum things up, I was recently asked if I would do another renovation with Michael. I've never been happier to write a good review. We renovated our 3 bedroom apartment with Hakka, including installing hardwood floors, moving walls around, redoing the kitchen, moldings, paint, etc. we were expecting the living nightmare that one expects when doing serious renovation, like delays, mistakes, double charges, and more. NONE of that happened. Unlike everyone else we know who went through renovations, ours was done on time, on budget, and the work is simply superb. Every question and issue were addressed immediately, and dealing with them was just wonderful, no less. not at all what we expected from a construction company. I worked with Michael and his team to remodel the kitchen in my Manhattan Co-op. It was a gut renovation that required a redesign. Michael was extremely helpful not only in the design process but also in the material selection. He arranged to take me around to a few vendors to look at tiles, cabinets and appliances. He gave great advice but was not pushy and worked with me to find the best things to fit my budget. Throughout the whole process, Michael maintained constant and clear communication every day. This was such a refreshing change from my previous contractor who was clearly working on multiple projects at the same time. Michael and his team worked every minute of the available work day that was given by my co-op and was very considerate of the building rules. Even gave me useful advice on how to deal with my super/building management which can often be a bottleneck and a source of delay. Michael and his team did a phenomenal job on our home renovation. Seeing is believing. Before we signed on with Hakka, Michael gave us references from past jobs and we were able to speak to and meet with previous clients to see first hand the amazing projects that they have completed. Their quality and attention to detail is superb. They take a lot of pride in their work and it shows. We did a full interior renovation (new insulation, drywall, electrical, plumbing, heating/cooling) replacing oil heating with gas and installing ductless A/C units. Be wary of the contractors that give you the lowest price. You always hear horror stories about bad contractors that low ball you and then rip you off with more and more things that need to be done. We were very fortunate to meet Michael and Jenny who walked us through every step along the way, engaging subcontractors as needed making sure that we were involved in the decision making every step of the way. Dan and his team recently renovated our basement, and we couldn't be more pleased! Everything from the estimate and project planning, actual renovation, and cleanup surpassed our expectations. We have worked with 3 other contractors for various projects over the years and would never use another contractor after this wonderful experience. Dan was a clear, patient, and responsive communicator. He made great suggestions for improving the layout of the space and helped us choose the perfect flooring. His crew works extremely hard, practiced COVID safety, protected furniture with coverings, kept a neat workspace, and got the job finished faster than I expected. There were zero delays or surprise costs. Be wary of contractors who provide you a suspiciously low estimate because it usually ends up resulting in tons of additional charges. Dan consulted me every step of the way when it came to even small details, which I appreciate because I am a very Type A person :) Our basement is beautiful and more functional than we ever could have imagined! read more

This review is based on two experiences I had with Hakka Contractors. I needed to renovate my kitchen and had a hard time finding a reasonably priced contractor who was licensed to work in a co-op building. A co-worker referred me to Michael as he did a great job renovating her kitchen. I liked his portfolio of work and he gave me a fair quote so I hired him. He knew I couldn't spend a lot so he allowed me to buy my own materials and even referred me to a small shop in Flushing where I could buy my appliances at a discount. When the job was almost finished, I found out that I needed to buy extra materials. Michael had those items in storage and was generous enough to give them to me at no extra cost. I probably saved about $65. When I inspected the completed job, I was impressed by his team's attention to detail. They installed backsplash under the cabinet by the range hood. Nobody would see it, unless they looked there. This extra attention to detail is why Hakka Contractors stood out for me. His team worked fast, got the job done ahead of schedule and gave me good value for my money. I liked their work so much, I asked them to fix a problem outlet in my bedroom before they left. I gladly paid the extra cost. When my aging parents needed some electrical work done at their home, their usual electrician flaked out on them. I contacted Michael to see if he could squeeze this quick project into his busy schedule. Most contractors would turn down this small job, but Michael showed up on time, gave my parents a fair price, and again, went above and beyond with the job. My parents wanted to upgrade an electrical box in the basement and install a new light fixture in their master bedroom. My dad doesn't keep up with the latest lighting technology and bought an outdated florescent fixture for Michael to install. It used a lot of electricity and was prone to breaking easily. Michael took the time to explain to my parents the problems with this type of lighting and offered to give them a brand new, energy efficient LED fixture he had in storage at a significant discount. My parents saved about $50. Bottom line: Michael is not your typical contractor. He's honest, hard working, and keeps his appointments. His team are also no nonsense professionals who work fast and don't cut corners. I plan on using him again in the future without hesitation. read more

As first time renovators we really got lucky with Dan and his team at Hakka Contacting. I have a 1bdr/1ba Manhattan Co-op. Application was seamless. We installed new floors, resized the existing doors and guy renovated the entire bathroom, along with some electrical upgrades. Unlike many horror stories you hear with contractors Dan was very easy to talk to and delivered on what was promised. We did end up compromising on a few things due to the building's existing structural status but Dan had great suggestions for alternative solutions. We installed herringbone wooden floors which came out great. He coincidentally had been installing them in a previous reno and let me come see the work first hand. Doors are a dream and the bathroom came out better than expected. We were very nervous as we decided to save and not hire an architect or interior designer. We got lucky as Dan has great taste and his background in engineering doesn't hurt. If at anytime we weren't happy with installation ( which only happened once or due to an error of measurement on our part ) he had no problem fixing it. The price was more than fair and very transparent. No hidden fees. Anything additional was discussed and approved by us. Dan is communicative emailing me back well past 11pm so that I'd have up to date information the next morning. They finished in a little over a month which I though was impressive timing. I could not dis-agree with the previous review of this contractor, no one is perfect, but he is one of the few honest and trustworthy contractors out there. We have used this company over the past several years to renovate our kitchen as well as our bathroom. Both projects were done exactly on time and on budget, no surprises as everything was in writing and all policies were laid out clearly. In addition to his excellent work, he even took a great deal of time to go shopping with u, sometime all day, to look for materials and appliances, he always found us the best deals with suppliers as well. When the work was completed, he was quick to respond to follow up on any problems that needed attention, he even helped with some extra small jobs at no additional cost to us as he was present. We continue to get compliments on our beautiful kitchen and new bathroom which have no doubt enhanced the value of our co-op apt and he is the only contractor we EVER recommend to friends and colleagues. read more

I first hired Hakka Inc in 2012 to renovate my COOP and they did an excellent job. One of the best things about Hakka Inc is that they are very professional and friendly and willing to listen to what I wanted. Hakka Inc completely renovated my bathroom and kitchen and made them both look beautiful. I couldn't be more happier with the results. In my living room and bedroom they put in an entire new wood floor which i was really impressed about. When ever I have guests over they cannot get over how beautiful my apartment looks. I hired Hakka again to do some renovation in regards to water damage and once again I was completely impressed by their dedication and skills. Their prices are great and their work is wonderful. What makes Hakka contracting so wonderful is that they have a great relationship with the super and my building management which makes it all the more easier to get the paper work done to start renovations.
