I am not and never was a serious record collector, but I bought a lot of 7" records, punk records and the odd hilarious cassette tape. I do know Freecloud is a great place for collectors to go. There are always people in there taking a good, long browse, buying, selling, and shooting the breeze with Rich, the owner (and singer/guitar player in Mad Bomber Society). That man is like a living music encyclopedia, I'm telling you. The price range is huge, from cheap for random old EPs to expensive for rare collectors items. If they don't have what you want, they'll try their best to order it for you. I personally like to buy tickets for shows at Freecloud whenever I possibly can, rather than giving my money to Ticketmaster. At most he'll charge a $1 service charge which is pretty decent in my books. I love all the postcards, old show posters and quirky records up on the walls. One of my favourite places in the city for sure. AND! They just got named one of Canada's Top 10 record stores! http://tinyurl.com/c4s7m6b

If you can imagine a universe where Joy Division never broke up, the Chemical Brothers became the new Beatles, and Lisa Loeb is still hot, than you will enjoy Listen Records & CDs. The staff at Listen is awesome. Very nice, personable guys with a lot of patience. My wife went there recently with a long list of items that she was seeking out for me. She said that the dude working the check-out was totally cool and didn't mind looking up every item on the list to see if it was available, and if not, where she could find it. He didn't even exhibit any signs of musical snobbery towards my classic rock and metal leanings. She came home full of raves (and records). If you're into metal or older rock music, Listen won't be your ideal stop, but it's great for people who aren't into mainstream stuff. Listen has a demographic in mind and they who know their target audience is.

The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is filled with different antique/vintage vendors so trying to hunt down a particular item can be hard, and might be in more than one spot. That said I've been on the hunt for vintage travel postcards from specific destinations I've visited (and there's a particular style I want). Postcards are in several different spots so when I come here I try to go through them all. I've done pretty well on my mission, but there are still some destinations I don't have. I posted a request for a bird book (Birds of Alberta). I had been looking for since mine had gone missing some time ago. Well what do you know - a few weeks later, they CALLED ME and let me know that they had the book I requested on hold and waiting for me. They have fabulous hours, great staff, and prices are really good too. I parked right out front, but because it was a Friday night at 10:30pm when I went to pick up, they offered to walk me to my car... it's Whyte Avenue, and later on it can be a bit... well, uncomfortable for women alone. Who DOES that anymore?! I REALLY appreciated the offer and concern for my well- being. I love coming in here to browse - and I admit, in the past couple of years of pandemic, I haven't spent any time in any business. At that time of night, and with fewer crowds on a Friday night, I might just have to come and browse again soon. I will definitely be requesting other books online - what an efficient way to shop!

I went to their designated call button for online orders, repeatedly pressed the button, allowing time in between each press for a staff member to come from somewhere in the store. I see a staff member organizing shelves, I approach them and ask if they can help me that I'm there to pick up an order and nobody has come to help me. They said I haven't received a call and the I don't need to be rude to them. I paused for a moment confused, and then stated that I'm not being rude. To which point the staff member stated I was being rude and that they were only matching my rude energy. I said I wanted to speak with a different staff member so I didn't have to deal with them. The staff member then replied that too bad, they were the only person available, and maybe I shouldn't be so rude next time and that the call button isn't working and they work in customer service and know how people are. I responded by stating that I work in customer service too and know how to treat people and it wasn't my problem the call button wasn't working, I followed their process to collect my online order, it is not my problem their process is broken. The sales person then asked for my last name, I gave it to them. I had my order open on my phone with the bar code ready to be scanned, the sales person then stated they needed my order number and proceeded to grab my phone out of my hand without asking. As they entered the order number the sales person stated that maybe next time I could just go to the till and have somebody help me there. I said the reason I didn't go there is because they were busy helping other customers and I didn't want to be rude. As they walked away to get my books, I said I was going to leave a bad review and they responded with maybe I shouldn't be so rude next time. I have never experienced such rudeness in a customer service person and then be gaslight by the staff member in trying to make me out to be the bad guy simply because I was expressing frustration in a process. I never once raised my voice, swore or name called. I was simply trying to express my frustration. As someone who has spent their entire career in customer service and take pride and joy in customer service, I find it disappointing that this was the go to response from a customer service person. There is enough ugliness in the world, empathy and kindness when someone is expressing frustration about a process, goes a long way.

They've got games, toys, and tonnes of other items to browse. There's also a Starbucks if you want to buy and coffee and book and sit and read for a bit. My niece and I checked it out for her spring break as they had a week of kids activities. It was super cool... and I learned about new toys that are on the market that I was in the dark about. The event started off with an employee reading a book t all of the kids before they went to the different stations. The different stations for the kids were coloring, play games, and having an interactive experience. Indigo head office also provided grab bags for the first 50 kids or so through the door and we were lucky enough to show up on time and my niece got one. She was tickled pink and went home super happy. Book readers exist lol, we walk amongst everyone else... we need bookstores!! Shop local and save yourself shipping and just buy off the shelf
