Over the last 7 years, Sunrise Fly Shop has taken me and two sons from newbies to casting for bonefish in the Carribean Sea. Eric, Ryan and his entire staff are both excellent instructors and know the Bighole & Beaverhead like the back of their hand. As I now fish over 30 days a year and have experienced numerous guides and outfitters in those outings, Sunrise Fly Shop is who I measure those shops & trips against. And throughout those trips, there is only one other shop (located in Washington state) which rises to the level of customer service and expertise that Sunrise provides. If you want someone to introduce you to flyfishing...they are gentle and patient. If you want numbers...don't be surprised if you need to ice your arm after the trip. We have had days with 40+ in the net. If you want to hunt a 20"/4+ lb. brown trout, they know the secret spots and tactics to make that possible. We've had days where a fish under 20" was "meh." If you want someone to simply break down your faults and get you to be a better caster, they are great instructors adapting their coaching to your coachability. Their diverse staff and excellent skills will put you in the right boat, with the right guide on the right water to make your trip successful and memorable. We've pulled out 25" brown troat from water that looks like a chocolate milkshake and is running at 6x the rivers normal speed. We have slain 20" trout on the Beaverhead in late October when the river is barely moving. We've had amazing days when you have to remove ice from the put in. While the summer days are always special on western rivers, don't discount the fun and success you can have on the shoulder seasons when guided by Sunrise Fly Shop. It's called fishing, not catching, and on those slow days, the staff keeps a positive & hopeful attitude while aggressively trying tactics you didn't know existed to make your day on the water as fun, pleasant and successful as possible. Sunrise is located on some of the most beautiful water in SW Montana and I'd put the Bighole, when guided by Sunrise, as the apex fishery for big browns. If you haven't fished the Bighole, you owe it to yourself to visit! And Sunrise Fly Shop is the team to use to make that investment of time, travel & money produce the highest yield. read more

Booked two days with guides through Sunrise. The staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We floated the Big Hole with Rick "the professor". He was a pro and knew all the holes. Unfortunately, we arrived at the same time as a big heat wave. Water temperatures reached 73 degrees so the trout went into hiding but we had some fun catching whitefish. The next day we fished the Beaverhead with Mika and had a great time. We caught a bunch of browns between 16-21". He knows the river like the back of his hand and predicted where we would find fish. He also gave us a couple good recommendations for spots to fish on our own the next day that helped us get more browns. He's the best guide I've worked with and I will use him again on return trips. My only reason not giving 5 stars is because I wish the shop would have let us know the impact the heat was going to have on the Big Hole and recommended another river. But we still had a great time. read more

Always wonderful! Has everything a fly fisherman needs, and, more importantly, friendly, helpful staff. To be honest, I go there many times to "talk shop" with the guys, whether or not I "need" to make any purchases. I would easily rate Sunrise as one of the top fly shops not only in MT but in the US. They also run the best guide service in MT and it's not even close. In MT you have what seems like endless options for fly shops & guides to get you on the water but Sunrise is different. I've had the very good fortune of fishing with many "good" guides over the years and across the world, but I keep going back to Sunrise. Every Year. They know every inch of their water. Period. Most importantly, Ryan and Eric are both extremely active as conservationists in their community and frankly, that means a lot to me. They genuinely care about protecting and preserving the resource. Not good! Booked 2 days for the Big Hole and we were sent to Jefferson. It was over a 2 hour round trip driving to a river that wasn't fishing well. No communication of this when booking and both owners were very unprofessional about the whole situation. I would suggest you book elsewhere. read more

Good looking store, horrible service for non-residents in a county that is not friendly to non-residents in general. Went in on a Sunday, asked about where to float on the Big Hole, got a suggestion from the shop, they sold us a shuttle. Long story short, we floated a section of the river closed to non-residents on Sunday and got ticketed. Went back on Monday, told them they both didn't tell us that that section was closed to non-residents (they knew we weren't residents when they sold us the shuttle as they get your license plates) and that they sold us the shuttle. They were very unapologetic, didn't acknowledge that they should've alerted us to the local regs, etc.... Worst service I have ever received in a fly shop anywhere. We should've known that section of the river was closed, but a good business would not have let this happen. Give your business to the Montana Fly Company - not as fancy looking, but good old-fashioned customer service. read more

I always make sure to stop in Sunrise on my trips to Montana. They have an excellent shop loaded with great flies, rods, and any other gear you might need. The customer service is top notch, and their knowledge of the rivers in the region is unmatched. I've taken several guided trips through the shop, and each has been an excellent experience. I have just experienced the best trout fishing of my life and owe it to Sunrise Fly Shop. I am from the south and planned this trip to fish Montana for trout on the fly rod. A friend of mine recommended this shop and there guides. Man was I impressed!!! The shop is loaded with all the top quality gear.(Simms,Rio,Hatch,etc..) The first day I planned to wade fish the Big Hole. One of the owners,Ryan Barba(sp?), showed me places that I could wade fish, recommended flies, and told me how to fish them. I was surprised how well I did by following his instructions. The next day I fished with one of their guides, Guitou. That day ended up being my best day trout fishing ever. Not only did I catch great numbers of trout, but I caught trout bigger than I have ever seen!! Guitou had all the qualities you want in a guide, energetic, knowledgable of the water/fish, great teacher, patient, and just fun to fish with. I fish a lot, and on average fish on guided trips 4-6 times a year fresh and salt. He was keyed in to these fish more than I have seen any guide. I had an amazing trip and will be back next year. I have fished with Ryan and Eric from the Sunrise Fly Shop several times over the past few years. I have always found them to be great fly fishing guides and totally committed to our enjoyment of the day. They know the Big Hole and the Beaverhead rivers inside out, and are generous with their patience and time in making sure we are casting well, and getting on fish. They make time for us at the end of the day, they take pictures, they chase down flies we get stuck in the trees. They have an awesome shop with a killer selection of flies and lots of great gear. They give us a long, full day of their time on the river and are always flexible based on what we want. A sausage and egg sandwich with pepper jack cheese from next door for breakfast, a good lunch, a great day of catching Big Hole browns, top it off with a Moscow Mule, and you have a great day of fishing.
