In addition to knowing all things (and i do mean all) about the local birds, including their sounds and habitats, she could also share information perfectly about the bison, the antelopes (that we saw that day) and the native grizzlies. The local donuts were amazing as well as our lunch out with some local Montana fare. All in all a superb day, chock full of information that will have your feeling like an expert too! Don't miss this opportunity!

Our focus was photography, and our route did not disappoint on that score. We also stopped for fresh baked goods and coffee on our way out of Missoula which made the ride that much more pleasant. We are generally outdoor people but we chose to use a tour company because we were traveling with a baby and didn't know how to find routes that would be child friendly and not overly demanding. We would definitely recommend Wenfei's guiding services and have referred several friends to her Big Sky Safaris for Montana travel. In particular her being a biologist makes an outstanding enhancement to hiking - we are not very knowledgeable about birds and animal droppings, and Wenfei pointed out all sorts of interesting things for us as well as small details worth photographing that we wouldn't have noticed on our own. Wenfei made us very comfortable, gave us excellent gear advice, and spared us many hours of poring over maps to identify good areas to visit. She also was really knowledgeable about the local plants and birds during our early autumn MT trip. This was a great splurge during our MT trip and one we'd do again in a heart beat.

The guide was very (overly?) enthusiastic with some exaggerated "facts" (didn't seem quite right to me, so I researched a few things afterwards). Indeed Butte was a very important, crowded and rough place in the early part of the 20th century and the stories you will hear on this tour give a good flavor of that time, just know that it's more like watching a movie "based on a true story", than a documentary.

Gold, silver, and finally copper brought Butte's population to nearly 100,000 in 1917, with more than 150 underground mines running 24 hours a day. Today there are numerous reminders of the opulence, decadence, and wild lifestyles of poor European immigrants, miners, businessmen and of course the wealthy "Copper Kings." Old Butte Historical Adventures guides you through this rough-and-ready history in the nation's largest National Historic Landmark District, with 6,015 contributing resources. I decided to just rate my experience here and I must say it was a good one. In all honesty, I've never heard of the place until today. I have lived in Montana for 14 years now but for some reason or another, this place never crossed my radar. While taking a road trip to explore Butte today, my husband insisted we stop here. After a quick Google search on my phone, I saw we were only about a mile away but had less than 20 minutes before it closed (4pm on a Sunday). The younger man at the desk inside was very helpful and told us we didn't need to rush and could take our time. It was $10 for my husband, myself, and our two kids to enter. After paying, you walk through a short tunnel to the viewing area. Unfortunately the wind was insane today so we did end up rushing, but it was still a very unique experience and I am glad we decided to go. The color of the water is deceiving. You wouldn't guess it is full of toxic chemicals. The Berkeley Pit used to be an open pit copper mine. It has a depth of over 1,600 feet and is filled with over 900 feet of water. It is said to have the acidity of Coca Cola or lemon juice. The pit is filled with a combination of various chemicals, which help give it that greenish-blue color. It was interesting to stand there and imagine how it looked years ago. My kids really enjoyed reading about the history of the pit. We do plan on making another trip back there when the weather is better so we can fully fake advantage of that piece of Butte's history. I would definitely recommend!

I learned so much about Missoula and felt even more comfortable with the downtown as we walked to all the various restaurants on our tour. We got to learn more about the town as we walked to our next food sampling. Jocelyn would recommend restaurants to try if we were in the mood for this or that (ice cream, breakfast, etc) and made sure we got try a variety of foods and drinks on this tour. Restaurant staff (primarily the owners) came and spent time talking with us which made the tour feel even more special. Jocelyn helped make this a memory for the family books! She was absolutely amazing! My parents could not stop talking about the tour for days afterwards. Highly recommend!!
