There's not a ton of old fashion donut shops around. I've been to Sunrise Doughnuts twice now when picking up donuts for the office. It's tucked away in a strip mall, blink and you'll miss the entrance. Make sure you get there early as they do sell out. During my last visit I ordered on a Friday morning around 7am. I hand selected two dozen donuts and the employee working was friendly and helpful. I was a little shocked to see that my total was $45 but it is what it is. The glaze donuts are a staple and the filled jelly was also a winner. I wish I was able to try a bunch of them but how many donuts can one person eat?! I would love to see a couple options of donut holes but it's possible I missed them during my visit. I'll continue to stop in for special occasions for the team. read more

Absolutely amazing donut shop! The donuts are always fresh, soft, and incredibly delicious. There's a great variety to choose from, so there's something for everyone. The apple fritters are exceptional and easily some of the best I've ever had, perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Well worth the slightly higher price! (They're huge!) On top of that, the service is always incredible. Friendly, welcoming, and fast. The prices are great, I always get a half dozen which is a discounted price. A nice quiet and clean donut shop tucked in a corner of a small strip mall in Bloomington. Found this place by accident when going to Chan Oriental Market for Asian groceries. Prices are reasonable and friendly service. Although, the donuts have a strong oil smell and taste. I love finding new donut shops to check out. This one's been on my list for a while! So glad I went to check it out! They have a good variety of flavors and styles. Cake, raised, jelly filled, cream filled, you name it. I went at 630am and there were plenty of options...however they do close early if they sell out! Sunrise is a small family owned shop who make their own doughnuts fresh every day. Their variety is huge in terms of shape, flavor, and filling. My personal favorite is their cherry frosting donut! Hidden on the side of a strip mall is this gem of a bakery. This is the type of place that closes at noon or closes earlier if they sell out. It's a very simple interior with just a couple tables to enjoy your treats, most people grab and go. The donuts are flavorful and you always can count on finding something you like. This is a sweet little place (pun intended). I love that they open early, like a donut shop should. The variety of donuts is wonderful, basically any kind of donut I've enjoyed before I saw at this place. The donuts were fresh, the frosting delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. I got my favorite, an old-fashioned with chocolate frosting. My advice is to go early, while they are as fresh as can be, and enjoy your morning treat. Sunrise Doughnuts is about as no-frills as you can get for a donut shop. You won't find any strips of bacon or sugary cereal on top of your donuts here, just the essentials. For what it is, they're a pretty good choice to go with too. I stopped in on a Friday morning to pick up two dozen assorted donuts for the office. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and really helpful making the large order go easy. I told him I basically just wanted a good mix of everything and he then went to town. Managed to pack them all nicely in one box too. The Twin Cities has dozens of different donut places to pick from. I wouldn't say Sunrise Doughnuts is one of my favorites, but they're definitely not bad, and I would stop in again if given the chance. read more

High hopes for this place, as we've been disappointed in our search for a good, classic doughnut shop. Walked in the door on a Wednesday morning at 8am and an extensive selection of doughnuts awaited looking just like the old school donut shops I love. Daughter and I each ordered a sugar raised, the baseline for all good doughnuts. We toasted our doughnuts and took our first bite... delicious! The doughnut was nicely raised, squooshed down and popped up, light texture, fresh, not too sweet. Next I tried the plain old fashioned - just the right amount of crispy outside and nutmeggy flavor. Lastly had to go with the powdered sugar lemon bismark, which was everything you would expect, super fresh donut with classic lemon filling. Daughter also ordered an iced long john and a glazed. Her highly sensitive palate detected a slight weird aftertaste. This was not noticed by me as I was happily savoring my new favorite, Sunrise doughnuts. The one staff person was happy and helpful. The ~8 inside tables were all clean. We sat outside to eat and viewed a steady stream of customers also enjoying these time-honored pleasures. So glad we found this place! P.S. The French crullers are not currently available due to some weird issue related to the Avian flu outbreak and the eggs in the special flour used in crullers. I enjoyed this little shop. The apple fritter was $2.50, and it was huge!!! It's about the size of 4 fritters. I was only able to eat half of it, but I thought the donut itself was good. Not the most amazing fritter I have ever had(best one was in PHX and that was a perfect fritter), but this was was good. The dough was soft, and the fritter wasn't super greasy, which was nice. The glaze was tasty! I would definitely come back for this fritter. The reg glazed donut was ok, but I thought the fritter was far superior to the glazed donut. Really awesome doughnuts here! Fairly priced, great quality and delicious unlike some doughnut places that have way too much stuff on it and can be over priced. Sunrise keeps it real! The shop is located in the little plaza strip mall and is literally tucked in the center of it. Great location in Bloomington not to mention it's only less than 4 mins away from my home! They have doughnuts in all shapes, FLAVORS and sizes! We usually get the traditional glazed, cinnamon twists, cake doughnuts and the maples. The glazes are to DIE for and are super close to K Kremes. Not dry at all they are perfectly raised and not overly sweet. I recommend getting there EARLY if you have a preferred doughnut, don't get there at 11:30 am on the weekends, nothing will be left! The only downers I'd have to say is that they are only open til 1 pm, wish they'd stay open til 8 pm, there are people who like doughnuts at night too! I keep trying these new, hyped up places that are trying to reinvent the wheel, or donut as it may be, and they just don't really do it for me. The place reminds me of the donut shop we went to when I was a kid. They've got fritters, old fashioneds, cake donuts, bismarks, raised donuts and long johns. i've heard rumors of crullers but they must have been sold out when I was there. If you like blueberry and you like cake donuts, an especially if you like blueberry cake donuts, you HAVE to get one here. Honestly hands down the best one I've ever had. My mom agrees. I had to go back in to grab once since we forgot in the original order. My mom and I split it and all I could think of was that I had secretly bought 2, so I'd have another one all to myself for later. Yes! Loved the cake donuts and especially the old fashioned, it was really tasty. The custard filled bismark was good as well, but nothing spectacular. It's a slight step up from the custard filled bismarks at Cub, which aren't bad themselves. I didn't try the apple fritter but according to my tester, it wasn't super apple-y. He didn't taste any apple bits that you get some other places, and he prefers the whole thing a little more crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. He still prefers the ones at Cub, which I have to admit aren't bad either. I'll be sure to go back for more cake and old fashion donuts in the future. Customer service was great, the guy was very friendly. When you go in the strip mall the store is kind of easy to miss. Right in the middle of the Great Bear Strip Mall there is a gap in the buildings with almost a courtyard and the donut shop is in there, not facing the street on the main strip. So if you spot the Sunrise Doughnuts sign and then see a different business right below it on the front of the strip mall (it's a dry cleaner or laundromat or something) don't panic. Tucked away in the back of a strip mall in Bloomington near Lyndale/90th this place never disappoints. If you want nasty, grocery store or gas station donuts, then by all means stop reading and go there. If, on the other hand, you want inspiring, tasty, cakey doughnuts made with love and hard work, this is your Sunrise moment. There's something for everyone here. Not fancy, not tryna be something it's not. Sunrise has been here like oh gosh forever. Family owned, the Sunrise staff is up early, daily makin em fresh....when they are gone, they are gone which explains why sometimes they close earlier than posted times. That's ok with me! I'm an old fashioned kinda guy so that along with the apple fritter are my "go to's". Crispy outside, kinda moist inside and not overly greasy....vanilla pleases the palate. And for the fritter, chunky pieces of apple and well placed sprinkles of cinnamon do complete donut justice. While Sunrise feeds the masses of walk ins, they do a robust catering/ pick up business. It's not unusual to see dozens of large donut orders in clean white boxes lined up and stacked sometimes 2 or 3 high waiting to go. Awesome donuts, friendly service. Coffee is good too. Made the commute out here to try some donuts and the place was closed. Nothing on social media indicated it would be closed. Yelp, Facebook, and Google all indicated the shop was currently open today. Hours posted on the door said they should be open when we went (we arrived at noon, they're supposedly open until 1 on Saturdays). A couple other people clearly didn't know they were supposed to be closed, as they went and tried the door before we did. If a place is going to be closed during regular business hours it's important to make that clear on social media, websites, etc. I know some donut places will close early if they sell out but that was not indicated anywhere on their page either (Glam Doll and Sleepy V's make this apparent on their websites). The fact that this was out of our way is frustrating and makes me not want to come back. I hope Sunrise will be more transparent in the future if they intend on closing during regular business hours. read more

The shopping center doesn't look like much from the outside, but tucked around the corner is the cutest donut shop. Currently they are allowing fives guests in at a time to wait in line and order. Serve was speedy for a one man operation. My favorite was the glazed twist yeast donut. Light and sweet! I also tried a blueberry cake donut which was also excellent. The apple fritter was not my favorite, maybe a little raw on the inside but seeing other pictures I think it was just the batch. Overall I will definitely be back! read more
