In Orange Beach for spring break. Woke up on Easter morning to storms so I knew we weren't going to the beach today. Once the rain stopped, I ventured out to the Sunliner Diner for breakfast. It was packed but since I was dining alone, I got to eat at the bar. Inside is definitely nostalgic as some tables are like convertibles and the servers are dressed up like carhops. The menus look like newspapers and everything else including the music reminds you of the 50's. I'll give them grace on service because it's Easter. She was doing her best but was overwhelmed. She was nice though. Super nice. Ordered the waffle classic plate, with hashbrowns, scrambled eggs and bacon. The waffle was so good. Light and fluffy with crispy edges. Eggs were powered which I didn't care for but the hashbrowns and bacon were delicious too. I had some of the best coffee too. read more

We fell for the influencer hype and chose this spot for a vacation dinner. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. We were seated right away, but our server's attitude set the tone almost immediately. When he asked whether our party of seven would be on one check, we explained that the grandparents would be on a separate tab. His response was, "Really?" delivered with obvious annoyance. We all gave a nervous laugh, and I initially wondered if this was one of those restaurants where the staff are intentionally sarcastic or rude. He then hovered over the table asking for drink orders. Since drinks ranged from about $5-$15, we decided to start with water while we looked over the menu and decided whether we wanted to splurge on shakes. When he heard that everyone wanted water, he visibly rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away. The level of disgust and disdain was so obvious that I honestly wondered if something else was going on, because it was hard to imagine this being acceptable customer service. A few minutes later, he returned and asked if we were ready to order. The menu was overwhelming, and with three kids at the table, I hadn't had a chance to fully look it over. I asked for another minute or two, but instead of giving us some time, he insisted on standing there and taking everyone else's order while I tried to make a decision under pressure. It was so pushy and uncomfortable that I never ended up ordering anything for myself because I didn't have enough time to decide. That has never happened to me before in a restaurant. When he brought back the waters, he didn't actually serve them. Instead, he kept handing them to us and saying, "Pass this," so we distributed all the drinks ourselves. There wasn't any table layout issue preventing him from reaching us. Later, when the food arrived, the runner--whom we could barely hear or understand--similarly kept handing plates to me, and I ended up serving much of the table myself. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the service. Given the prices, we expected much better quality. The food was underwhelming, and after it arrived, we received virtually no follow-up service. At one point, my husband had to get up and go to the bar himself to get condiments for my mom's sandwich because no one ever checked on us. Needless to say, we never ordered those shakes. I ended up leaving having consumed nothing but a glass of water. My 11-year-old son summed it up best: "I'd give them a 5/5 for atmosphere, but the food and service were a solid 1/5." Honestly, that's a pretty fair assessment. The atmosphere was great, but the service was some of the worst we've experienced, and the food didn't justify the cost. Menu was vast with a full page of breakfast items, a full page of lunch and dinner items and a page of milkshakes and desserts. My son had the Jukebox burger and finished. He said it was great and the burgers were juicy. I had the patty melt and my patties were dry. There was not much thousand island dressing either so that was a bummer. We shared some onion rings that were a little doughy. If you like thin crispy rings then pass. Desserts passed our table and they looked awesome. Over the top. That's how I'd describe Sunliner in 3 words or less. Sunliner is a huge diner that transports diners back to the 50's, with booths made out of historic cars, chrome everywhere and staff dressed for the era. The menu is in a newspaper with information about the origins of Orange Beach. The table with the boomerang pattern is reminiscent of my grandmother's table. They have the ambiance and customer service perfected. It was new and clean which is a feat considering how many people are in and out daily. The menu selections are just as over the top as the environment. Items are huge. It was genuinely fun to watch food being delivered to other tables. The menu is not as diverse or large as some diners, but there is a good selection of burgers, sandwiches, salads, entrees and breakfast fare. We had the chicken and waffles and a side salad. The side salad was decently sized for the price. The chicken was large, well seasoned and a nice compliment to the large fluffy waffle. I personally found the chopped bell peppers as a weird addition to the dish, but maybe that is just me. It was a pricey dish, but it was more food than I could really eat. Considering portion size and location in the midst of a tourist destination, the prices are probably reasonable. We didn't try the deserts, but there are plenty of selections reminiscent of the old soda fountains. Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable meal. To be honest, I waffled (pun-intended) between a 3 and a 4 rating. The only slightly negative thing was the price, I can't penalize for price in a tourist destination so ultimately went with the 4. Ultimately, I think if you've got a family or a large group that will want a variety of food choices, this is a place to consider. read more

This place is so aesthetically pleasing. Everything is so colorful and clean. This was our first time checking out the new location. I got the country fried chicken and eggs and my husband got the big daddy-o breakfast. The highlight of my meal, as always when I come here, was the White Russian. The hash browns were slightly burned but tasted like they had been cooked for a while and no crisp at all. The sauce on the patty melt was good. Sunliner Diner - Looks Great, Falls a Bit Short We visited Sunliner Diner for breakfast during Spring Break with our family of four. It was busy with about a 30-minute wait, but being able to wait in our car and get a text when the table was ready was a nice convenience. The restaurant was clean and had a fun atmosphere. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite match the presentation. Our server wasn't very friendly and kept interaction to a minimum--we felt more like an inconvenience than guests. Because of that, they lost a star right there. The food looked amazing, but the taste was just average. We tried a combo Eggs Benedict (corned beef hash and chicken & waffle). The poached eggs were perfect, but the corned beef hash was bland and mostly potatoes with very little meat. The chicken & waffle Benedict was better. My son enjoyed the meat lovers omelette, but he's a teenage boy--he'll eat just about anything. The French toast bites were good, and the cinnamon roll pancakes were probably the best thing we had. Overall though, the food didn't live up to how good it looked--so that's another star lost. Maybe we just ordered the wrong items, and maybe our server was just having an off day. I'd be willing to give it another try and would happily update this review if the experience improves. Sunliner is so fun! The moment you walk through the doors you feel transported back to the 50s! There are booths inside of cars and other traditional diner booths and tables. The staff is all dressed in traditional 50s diner wear. The service is amazing! Haylie served us as she is so pleasant and attentive! Standard of Excellence has Slipped: A Loyal Guest's Warning This isn't our first rodeo with SLD. Every previous visit has been stellar, which makes this specific experience all the more disappointing. Between my 9 years in the hospitality industry and 30 years on active duty, I have traveled the world and I know what professional service looks like. This was a failure on every level. ​The Service ​The service was simply inexcusable. We were ignored by an inattentive server and left waiting far too long for initial drinks. The most frustrating part? We never got water. We asked repeatedly, and each time the server simply forgot. To sit through an entire meal without the most basic table requirement is a joke. We also had to beg for a knife, cream for the coffee, and even butter. It shouldn't be this hard to get the basics. ​The Food ​The kitchen was just as disorganized as the front of house. They missed the French toast entirely, and once it finally arrived, they forgot the syrup. To top it all off, the biscuits were served burnt. My wife hated her experience, and so did I. ​The Verdict ​I get better, more attentive service at fast food joints. SLD needs to take a page out of the hospitality playbook used by their parent restaurant just down the street. You have a reputation for excellence, but you missed the mark completely. The atmosphere is amazing. Designed perfectly with vintage vibes including antique cars on the inside and out. Two of the vintage cars on the inside have booths in them. Old jukebox. The menus are full size newspaper. We had the candy bacon for an appetizer. Amazing. Served in old tall soda fountain class. We also had big daddy's breakfast. 3 eggs 3 meats pancake and hash browns. Also we had country omelet with hash browns and biscuit. Everything was amazing. From the hostess to our waiter to busboys were all fabulous. The building looks inviting it it ends there. Prices are sky high and the scrambled eggs are reconstituted. My burger was sooo dry, nothing could help. The lettuce on it was wet and withered. I showed the waitress and she was baffled and brought me some fresh lettuce. They have a cart that takes all the dirty dishes and in the middle of the cart where all the milkshakes and drinks go in a big bucket like container, and it's splashing around going past us really may wanna throw up. My husband was in the mood for a burger so we ventured into the diner. It appeared clean but plastic-looking with over-the-top themed decor. We were seated promptly and soon after, the server had our drink order. Our order was for a double burger with cheese and fries and I went with a "safe" grilled cheese and onion rings. The food came quickly and the order was correct (there were probably 5 tables occupied this day). My husband said the burger was okay but unimpressive and the fries were nothing special and after about 2, he left the rest. The grilled cheese was awful. I was wrong....a grilled cheese was NOT safe. It was not made with butter or butter-flavoring just browned in oil. Dry as old bread. I left it. We each tried an onion ring and the remaining too were left on the plate. We declined the offer of a leftover box. A week later I had a guest who wanted to try Sunliner for breakfast. I let her know of lunch experience but she said, "breakfast is easy!" On this day the place was PACKED which didn't do it any favors sadly. Her scrambled eggs with cheese looked like dry, yellow curds. She thought they forgot the cheese but did manage to find a few strands of shredded. She did not finish them. Her grits were distasteful and her crispy bacon was barely cooked and was sent back. I ordered a piece of rye toast, crispy bacon, and hashbrowns. Bacon didnt arrive with toast and potatoes which i finished before they even brought the bacon. It was ALSO undercooked so instead of sending it back and staying longer i declined it. USUALLY we don't return after an initial lousy impression. Different circumstances this time allowed a second try. This place gets a lot of business, (at least during winter break and kids love gimmicks) We ordered standard diner food and expectations were not met. That's it! I wont make the mistake again.
