The staff behind the counter was very enthusiastic about finding me a pair of glasses that looks good on me. It makes the experience a lot better and he swore to give me his honest opinion. After asking me about my style preference, he was very accommodating about having me trying a few pair of glasses and at the end, I did get a pair of frames that I love. First of all, the lady on the phone was super nice and sweet - she clearly couldn't speak the best English, but she still communicated clearly and answered my clueless questions patiently. This stands in stark contrast to another clinic I called before this one, in which the native English speaker sounded stoned out of her mind and answered all my questions with "Uh... I don't know." (Wtf?! -_-) Anyways - I was happy to see the nice phone lady at the counter when I walked in. She again demonstrated her patience while I settled insurance issues that I hadn't prepared for, haha. The wait time for the appointment was somewhat long, but I'm used to that so it's whatever. The interior was clean and spacious. After meeting the doctor, I can *sort of* see why the past reviews might be so put-off by her? To me, she was great; she fulfilled her job to a T. In fact, I could tell she was actually rather friendly. Just monotone and stone-faced, lol. Then again, I'm used to blunt, straight-forward Asian doctors who forego the customer service voice. In fact, I prefer how streamlined the appointment was - no fluff, no awkward small talk. She'd give long, detailed explanations when I asked questions, so it's nice that she wasn't ALWAYS curt when it mattered. I brought to them a weird sort of dilemma - my insurance was ending soon, so I need contact lens before the end of the month, which meant less than week's turnaround. These would be my first contacts in a long while, which meant an exam and a trial period. Nonetheless, they accomodated me perfectly! The doctor cleared up any anxieties I had about my insurance, explaining logistics to me in a way that had me, someone who usually has no idea what insurance even is, easily understanding. The only thing is that they don't provide a free case for contact lens, which my friend said was weird, but I couldn't care less. This was my first time scheduling and coming to an eye exam on my own, and it was honestly relaxing. If my new insurance allows it, I'd definitely come back!

I had tried them on beforehand, and my mind was made up. I asked for them, I tried them on, I tried on a few other pairs just to be sure, I made up my mind once and for all, I turned over my prescription, I opted for anti-reflective lenses, I paid. The entire process took less than 20 minutes. Only 5 days later, I got the call that they were ready for pickup. As much as I wanted to bolt to Manayunk that very evening, I had to wait until the following day... Which turned out to be the eve of Snowpocalypse, Part III*. I called ahead to make sure they were going to be open by the time I arrived from Center City... They couldn't be sure, but they offered to give me a call if they decided to head out early. Turns out I made it just in the nick of time. I like to think they stayed open just for me; then again, I'm a narcissist. Being the online shopper that I am, it was easier said than done because so many of these online sunglasses shops are peddling garbage. Most of the stuff listed... if it's high end, vintage, or both... there's a good chance they don't really have that stuff. It's a trap. I was thinking... this is a big city with some stylish people sprinkled in. There has to be something out there. Eye Chic was literally my last stop on this hunt. I didn't need to look any further. My particular interest was vintage shades... and they got it IN! After having a chat with the friendly ladies who worked there we came to an understanding about the scams pulled online. I even spoke to a guy at another store who doesn't sell vintage because there's no profit in it (for him). They're listed below market value because they don't really have them online. So here's my caveat. Having seen some of the most coveted styles people pretend to have online... in person here... was humbling. On the flip side, these shades are just as expensive as you'd imagine they would be. What do they have? To name a few brands... Cazal, Carrera, Ray Ban, Alpina, and Porsche. (All top shelf vintage priced accordingly $500+) On the plus side, they have a case that regularly has half off merchandise. I don't want people to think they'd be priced out. They have affordable options too... the same stuff you can find in King of Prussia department stores (which is nothing to sneeze at, but it's not AS expensive as collector's frames mentioned above). Did I buy anything? I would've liked to, but I'm still battling demons with this obsession I have. There were a few styles that I saw online and couldn't bring myself to not try everything in my power to get them. Would I support Eye Chic in the future? I'd love to. To me, this is what South St. USED TO be about. Somewhere somehow the strip fell off, but it used to have stuff that couldn't be found elsewhere. As far as I'm concerned it's a destination for hats, shades, and food. Overall, Eye Chic is official. If you're serious about eyewear then this is your place. PRO-TIP: They're connected. If you don't see whatever FLY vintage frames you're looking for, they might be able to get them... or maybe they already had them.
