You cannot be passing through Bend, and not stop here. This is an icon, the last blockbuster on the…read moreplanet. The place is a good size. The friendly lady I was chatting with was telling me that yes, they get people stopping in from *EVERYWHERE.*. They have it all. Blu-rays, and DVDs for sale, and of course, they have them for rent. The rental prices are very reasonable. New releases suspense, Comedy, drama, you name it, they probably have it. They even have sections dedicated toward certain stars, when I was there, they had a "John Candy section." The blockbuster.com webpage is back online, and I was asking the lady if she knew if Blockbuster was going to be making a comeback. She said she didn't know, but she made a good point. They should. Now, if you want to see a movie, there's no guarantee that the streaming service you subscribe to will have that movie. How many streaming services would you have to subscribe to? It would be so easy just to pop in and rent your movie again. You know what they say, everything old is new again. And of course, they have hoodies, sweatshirts, and T-shirts, including one that has the classic phrase, "be kind, rewind." What a fun store.

Everyone working was so nice, even to us blatant tourists passing through. Of course they have movies to rent, but they also have a good chunk of pre-owned dvds and blu-rays available for purchase if you can't rent. I picked up a couple that were reasonably priced - they have a lot of gems here (criterion, shout factory, etc) and I noticed some harder to find & OOP Blu-rays as I was browsing too. They've also got some great memorabilia around the store as well as merch and souvenirs. If you like movies, you've got to stop by!

My experience with Riverbend Eye Care has been for optical services. Both for purchasing eyeglass…read moreframes and having eyeglasses made last year and prescription lens sunglasses this week. Had I posted a review based solely on last year's experience it would have been "AOK". But this year it's a big four star "yay!". Here's the summary of my experience and number 6 in the following list is why the rating moved up! 1. Convenient location with ample parking in a private lot. 2. Extremely friendly and helpful front desk staff. 3. Bright and welcoming office and optical display space. (Although small and so a tad cramped when you're trying to look at frames.) 4. Good selection of frames for men and women with mid range to upper range brand options including Helium, ProDesign, Vera Wang, Coach, Nicole Miller, Mykita plus many more. None of these are inexpensive brands but the prices here are fair and competitive for what they are. I was delighted by the price of the Nicole Miller sun-glass frames I chose, which were nearly $50 less than I expected! 5. They offered to deduct 10% off the total cost of my glasses, without me asking, given I do not bill insurance for them. 6. .A big improvement in optician staff service this year over last. This last point deserves explanation. The optician last year seemed competent but over stretched and always "on the run" frantically busy. Were it not for one of the uber helpful front desk staff who stepped in (and I think is now an optical staff technician) to help with selection and follow up, I probably would have walked out with the sale to Riverbend lost both that time and for return business. But, the glasses were well made. Which is one of the things that led me back in this year when I was looking for sunglasses. The other being "hip" but affordable style options. I found that this year, there are two new folks as optical staff at Riverbend. Knowledgeable about product inventory, skilled to help select the best frame for a customer's face and budget as well as in lens technology options. And perhaps most important, skilled at getting the right fit of the glasses for great vision. I could happily recommend Riverbend for glasses just for the experience of working with the opticians these days. I am happy to say there are other things - see list above - to add to the "I'm a fan" experience to recommend Riverbend for optical needs. My hubby will need new glasses soon and based on my experience, Riverbend will be his new "go to" place.

On a Sunday morning, after exploring Bend and attending a concert the night before, my husband and…read moreI decided that we wanted to float the Deschutes River. Luckily, we managed to do a walk-up appointment and get our tubes for floating. They do offer online reservations, more than 24 hours in advance, but they had plenty of inner tubes so a reservation was not needed that particular day. From start to finish, they made the entire process extremely easy and seamless. From being able to park your car and get a ride with your inner tube to the drop off point and then being picked back up by the shuttle and returned to the parking lot, and everything in between. They provided us with a good safety briefing as well as the opportunity to leave our car keys since I had not thought about bringing a waterproof pouch. For just about $30 per person, it was well worth the experience and took us about two hours, but we did stop after the rapids and spend some time just swimming before continuing on. If you are a local or just visiting the Bend area, I cannot recommend floating the river enough.

Meh. I thought the price was fair for the tubing experience, but they could provide such…read morebetter...several things, for customer enjoyment. (I've done the tube float down the Virgin River at Zion, and canoed and rafted countless rivers and lakes, several guided, some private.) The outhouses were full and needed to be serviced. So gross. We were there on a Sunday morning; perhaps yesterday was super busy?! Ew. Nobody offered to keep our keys. This is weird to me. Every raft/tube outfitter I've ever gone with has checked our keys for us. The tubes worked well and were fine. They're backless, though. Nicer models with backs and cup holders are so much better. The tip prompts are obnoxious. I paid for a service. Tipping is for people who go above and beyond. When I pay for a float, I shouldn't have a tip option presented right at booking. Weird. Then the driver also has a personal Venmo QR code on the bus. The only way I'd consider tipping is if I was personally fitted into a pfd, the driver handed me a water bottle or a slice of watermelon or something after the float, etc. They literally did nothing but hand us a life jacket, tell us where to get out of the river, and drive us to and from. They've been having issues with people missing the take out at Drake Park. We did see an employee on a kayak paddle out to help someone come in (she should tip him!), but otherwise there is no sign or anything, so if you're not paying attention you absolutely could miss it. To compare directly, on the Virgin River, an employee was standing IN the river, ready to help us, a huge sign was present, and another employee was on the shore to help carry tubes back to the trailer. Surely the city of Bend would allow them to erect a sign, even if only during business hours?! Or stack some of the orange tubes on the shore so floaters can see them clearly.

You can tell they absolutely love what they do and take real pride in it. They actually look happy to show up to work, which in 2025 feels rarer than a parking spot at Costco on a Saturday. You never feel like a number here; everyone is genuinely kind and all smiles. Insurance has always been super transparent, which I appreciate -- though, to be fair, I always bring it up immediately because I am who I am and I need to know exactly what's getting billed where. Now, despite their incredible appointment reminder system, I still managed to forget my appointment this morning. In my defense, I've been hauling my kid here weekly while she tests out different contacts for her uniquely dramatic astigmatism, so I assumed all the reminders were for her. Plot twist: they were not. They called me ten minutes after I was supposed to be there, and somehow I sweet-talked my way into being seen if I could get there in 10 minutes -- which was nothing short of a miracle given they're often booked out 4-5 months for routine exams. Would 100% recommend. Just... maybe don't ignore the reminders.
