I really tried to give Sunflower Chinese Restaurant my money; I called their number multiple times to try to place an order, but their voicemail inbox was full so the call instantly ended. Then, I went there in person and waited inside. The tables were empty because the restaurant is takeout only. There was no one at the front counter. I rang the provided bell which was labeled "call us", but no one came. I called out a few times, but no one came. I could hear--and sometimes see--people in the kitchen or in the hallway behind the counter, but no one ever came. I had a hankering for egg foo young so we ordered Chinese for dinner, fried rice, Shanghai noodles, tofu in blackbean sauce and of course, egg foo young. Their portions are very generous, the fried rice and noodles were average, the tofu was very good, but the egg foo young was something of a disappointment. It was tasty, a little mushier than I'm used to and dry, there was none of that light flavourful sauce it's usually topped with. Then there's the delivery time. Granted, it was a Friday and I do understand they were busy, but 2 1/2 hours seemed a bit much. To be fair though, they did tell me that it would take about 2 hours. Found this place through Google looking for some general tso and it had a decent rating so I figured it be good, tho I didnt read the reviews after seeing the 4.2 rating. The pics seemed legit and looked good enough, but we were sorely sorely mistaken unfortunately lol. We got there and the cashier was nice and we asked about the General Tso and if it was spicy because that's how we like it, she said it was, it was not at all. We got the food and at first glance it seemed good, but the taste was a TOTALLY diff matter. I'm not one for fish flavored anything and literally all of the food tasted fishy . Like it was all fried in fish oil or something. Even the CFR! Which on top of the fishiness it was tacky and had next to no chicken in it or egg and 0 veg. We we're so hungry tho and we'd already paid so we ate what we could. Well we were eating the owners or workers kid started screaming and swearing to someone they were playing an online game with right behind us, which just made the situation that much more frustrating after wasting $ for crappy food. I'm all for one for a family oriented small business place to grab some grub and all that, but come on! It's not something I want to hear. And if we had our kids with us I would be infuriated right now. One of the few restaurants we wanted to try that were open on a long weekend. Pretty decent vegetarian options, in noodle and dish forms, and in good portions. We had vegetable Singapore vermicelli, vegetable lo mien that both had decent taste. Our other family members had shrimp soup noodle that was a bit bland but had good bohchoy serving in same the bowl; and sweet and sour pork balls that tasty. Excellent family owned place. Probably the best Chinese restaurant in Kingston. Prices very reasonable. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Should be far busier than it is. Some highlights are the spicy tingly beef, sweet and sour pork, pork and salt fish eggplant, Cantonese chow mein, beef brisket with vegetables. Stopped in for take out. Only been open for a week and a half or so. Was very good food. Not greasy like other Chinese food we have had in town. The prep time for the food didn't take long at all. Very good food, and right close to home downtown. read more

We ordered sweet and sour shrimps, and shrimp and veggie chow mein (crispy). See pictures. Both were perfectly cooked and had just the right amount of flavours (ie. not greasy and not salty like bad Chinese food at the mall). Service was extremely friendly and appreciative of our visit. In a sea of underwhelming Chinese restaurants, this one fits right in. Not bad, but just nothing special. Fried Rice and Singapore vermicelli were bland. General Tao Chicken was alright. Egg rolls are ok. All just ok. On the cheap side and flavour is in direct correlation. read more

My wife and I stopped in on the way to a Frontenac's hockey game. The chicken fried rice was the best I've had , it just tasted fresh. The shrimp with sesame seeds was excellent along with the plain fried fresh broccoli. My best surprise had to be the Wonton soup which was actually in a nice broth that tasted home made. I came to this restaurant because the rating is so high, but this is definitely overrated. The taste was good, but the portion was too small. One of the dishes we ordered was satay beef with rice noodles, the beef seems like cheap beef, over cook a little bit. Another dish we had was Shanghai noodles with mixed veggies, the noodles were over cook again, became little pieces, couldn't even use chopsticks to pick them up. Quite disappointed... read more

Unbelievable!! I cannot even comment on the food quality because I never received my food! I placed my order at 4:50pm, and was told it would be 1 hour for delivery. at 5:50pm, the restaurant called me and said the driver with the visa machine was too far away and asked if I could pay cash. I told them I had a cheque, or I had $50 cash. As it turns out, my order is $58. The lady then said she could take my Visa number over the phone. I gave it to her, then she said it would be another 45mins for my food to arrive!! The food was good, but not as extraordinary as some reviewers profess. It was typical Chinese Canadian fare, with more salt and MSG than I would have preferred. The ingredients were fresh, and the portions were generous, plus, you actually got a fair bit of meat in any meat/vegetable mixes.
