Found this place by chance via yelp - surprised to find such an authentic bbq place in town. Pros Bbq eggplants , lamb, bacon with inoki mushroom - were so good and authentic. Beef with flat noodles had a very good flavor - my son loved it. Considerations Double cooked sweet and sour pork - the batter was too thick and the sauce was limited making it a bit hard to chew. Flavor was decent. Sliced beef and tripe - good portion size, the cook's interpretation of this dish differs from what I had before - a bit too much soy and saltiness and I personally would add more spices. The food here is authentic Chinese food and they also have some BBQ-style items on their menu. The fried rice I ordered was decent but nothing out of the ordinary, though the portion was generous. They don't have a great selection of drinks. The service was acceptable, but nothing extraordinary. Overall I would say it's your typical family-type small business that offers great authentic food. I really love coming here when I'm in Kingston. It is one of the few spots you can hit up for really delicious Northern-style cuisine. I got the Double Cooked Sweet and Sour Pork, the Fish Fillet and Lamb in Hot Chili Oil, and BBQ Chicken Gristle (cartilage). Food here was delivered in big portions. The deep fried pork was glistening with a sweet glaze and were really delicious. It was crunchy, sweet, and savoury. The hot pot had generous amounts of lamb and fish. I liked how tender the meat was and the spiciness of the soup broth. The chicken gristle was served on a skewer and dusted with cumin and other spices. They were super addicting to eat. The service here this time was much faster so I really appreciated that. read more

Authentic Chinese style Barbeque and northern Chinese food. Good portions, meat lovers heaven. 5 skewers of lamb kabob for 10 dollars is really awesome value (they are smaller than the kabobs you are used to for sure, but very flavorful). I highly recommend having it with some barbeque vegetables and steam buns. What's above and beyond is probably they also offer a full Chinese food menu, stir fried blue crab, lobster and such. I've also seen them running interesting deals like grilled fish buy one get one free (lol) probably because they just opened up. Take advantage of that while you can. And no, they don't have spring rolls, chicken balls or orange chicken co. So if that's the kind of things you are looking for, this place is a bad idea. Whether their authenticity is a plus or a minus for the kingston population, I am unsure. But it certainly has support from the international students from Queens. PS "northern" is really for the lack of a better terms I guess. There isn't such a distinction between north and south in Chinese food. There are distinctions within north and south depending on the regions. But from the amount of seafood on the menu I would guess the chef is from a coastal area in northern China. I don't even know anyone who would bother to compare Chinese food in North America with Chinese food at where it's from: so if you are new to kingston or to North America in general, I can understand where you are coming from. However, if you say holes like VIP Chinese (the name says it all) and silver wok are better, you are Chinese from a different planet who have spring rolls for dinner. I really wanted to love this place since it is (to my knowledge) the only Northern-style Chinese restaurant in Kingston. I ordered the braised pork noodle soup as well as BBQ'd cabbage and enoki mushrooms. While the BBQ and the soup broth were flavourful, I found that the braised pork itself was quite dry and tough. Would also like to mention that I got yelled at by the server as I was leaving as, instead of glancing at my table to see the money I left (which was clearly visible), they assumed that I had not paid my bill and nearly chased me...as someone who works in the industry, I understand that walk-outs do indeed happen, but it's not like I had been acting suspiciously or had been in a hurry to sneak out of there. Stopped here for lunch after my workout, and it was really good! I'm not SUPER knowledgeable about Northern Chinese food specifically, but I know it contains cumin, spices and a lot of dumplings. I got the charcoal bbq lamb shank, and 10 chicken dumplings. The bbq lamb was good, with a tiny bit of spice, but there wasn't a ton of meat on it. The dumplings had a solid flavour but the wrapper was very thick. I DO, however, appreciate the black vinegar they served with the dumplings. Definitely half decent for a lunch if you're craving dumplings, but the lamb isn't really worth $11. read more

I'm not really sure who wrote that review above. It almost seems like an advertisement rather than a review. This restaurant is not authentic and the chef's skills are really lacking. I ordered about 5 dishes plus rice and it added to over a hundred. The chefs and waitress kept on saying their food was authentic. I am from China so I know what authentic Chinese dong bei dishes taste like and this is not it. The prices are also very high and the portions are small (which they lied to us about). Their soup and dish portions sizes are smaller than both VIP and Silver Wok. The only thing we got an abundance of was white rice... I will not be visiting this restaurant again. read more

Our meal was tasty, hearty and good value. While one could be distracted by the "authentic" hype, it was nice to have a simple, clean, friendly Chinese eatery downtown on Princess. NCB is not about glitz or presentation and some of the menu descriptions might not appeal to the sweet and sour chicken ball crowd, but it is varied, interesting and intriguing to the adventurous visitor. Our hot and sour soup, lamb shank, kung pao chicken, fried rice and baby bok choy were very good, well spiced and ample for our party of four, for approximately $60; the 10% discount for cash payment was generous. The lack of a liquor license enhanced the experience rather than taking away it. The open kitchen was interesting as we watched the BBQ chef in action. He visited us to check on our meal and offered us a complimentary Tang Hulu dessert was a pleasant and very true to its origins. Not surprisingly the staff's command of English is rudimentary but passable. They are very proud of their cuisine and are appreciative of feedback. They are trying very hard to make their unique offering appeal to both Oriental and non-oriental alike. I would recommend it to those who are familiar with truly Chinese food. read more

Ordered take out for 2 times, not surprisingly got diarrhoea for both. I doubt the sanitary condition of this place. Authentic northern? Very funny. I bet their southern Chinese chef probably has not been to the further northern than Shanghai. (But do not try to ask for too much in Kingston. Here is not Toronto.) The price is ridiculous too. The last time I saw a dish for $16 or almost $20 was in NYC. Come on this is Kingston and this is not a fancy one. Do not rip our people off. If you want to try something better, more "authentic", try northern Chinese food in Scarborough or Markham, simply not here. All the Asian restaurants​ in town are shitholes. End of the story. BTW VIP and Silver Wok's are more authentic for Cantonese and HK people. I would rather choose Mandarin, at least they got service. read more

Good experience. I enjoyed the pork and chicken dishes that were ordered for me by a friend. The flavour was excellent and the waiter was very kind. This was my first experience in a non-north-american chinese restaurant and it was a good experience and I would return. I must say that I don't care for lamb but did eat a skewer and it was delicious. The price was reasonable. No complaints. read more
