My wife and my youngest son (14 yo) and I are spending half of Spring Break in Hilton Head. We let my son pick the place to eat today and he chose the Sundown Saloon based upon Yelp reviews. It was clear as we sat down that this is where the locals eat We sat out on the patio and appreciated the 6 foot hedge to provide us some privacy and we started with their nachos. They dust their chips with a signature blend of spices that made them so good. My wife got the Saloon burger, my son got the buffalo chicken sandwich & fries, with the same dusting that was on the nachos, and I got the southwestern salad. None of us could finish our meals given the portions that are served. Tasha who took care of us, while training another, did a fantastic job and was so attentive and sweet. So glad we chose this place and will be back the next time we come to Hilton Head. read more

We found this little hole in the wall restaurant while looking for someplace close to have lunch. It was a really small establishment, but very busy and seemed to be very popular. I'm rating it so highly because my husband said the burger was out of this world! I had the cowboy Mac and cheese which was nothing to rave about, but I'm not too picky. GREAT small local dive bar with great food and very friendly service. Small seating area with both high boy & low boy seats plus bar seats. The menu is why you go. Full of great choices reasonably priced. Many appetizers, specials, wraps, 1/2 lb burgers & hot dogs. Many large sides available at low prices. Sides so large you will take some home. Ok this place made my heart happy bc it's clearly a cherished creation of the owner. Everything is thoughtful and cool, the design gradually fades from patio lighting dining to brick wall as it becomes only bar. The signs are funny and not over the top, the art is all a theme, the tvs are visible but not going to overpower your table. We went to watch a soccer game and after a while I just leaned back and watched the room. It's a great vibe! Also the food is spot on, we cleaned our plates. My "lady friend" and I went there because it was the closest bar to the airport. The food did not disappoint us, although I did find a bone in my pulled pork sandwich. The only negative thing that i have to state is the shape of the bar. We sat at the only two bar stools available, which were at the far left side of the bar. The two bar tenders spent their time in front of the booze and were not very attentive when it came to checking on us. So if you go there do try to sit on the right side of the bar as you walk in. Definitely one of my favorite "go to" spots on the island. Mostly locals (which I always think is a good sign... especially because I qualify ;-) A few suggestions/advice: Food is great and the owners couldn't be nicer. Good menu - there is something for everyone. This is not a spot for a large group... more of a "hole in the wall". I wouldn't go so far to call it a dive bar but kinda has that feeling. Get the tater tots. They have a full bar but they have embraced the "rolling tap" philosophy... I personally don't like this because it is a total crap shoot if they have something on tap you will like (I think they only have 5-6 selections and sometimes they order strange beer). If you are not a beer drinker than no worries. I think they have abandoned their website so I think you are stuck with Yelp or some other site that may have it posted. Had lunch at Sundown Saloon on Friday afternoon. There were 4 in our party. Restaurant is on the smaller side, but has a large bar area. We were escorted to table, and looked at their extensive food/drink menu, and ordered drinks. Place is filled with quirky/fun plaques. Very reasonable food and drink prices. Best burgers around! We all tried different burgers. Would definitely recommend this place, and from the outside, has dark windows, and appears not to be open. Entrance to restaurant is on the side, few tables outside, but was way too hot to eat outside. read more

1st time stopping in thanks to the yelp reviews. It's in a dive-y looking strip mall with some other restaurants so you don't know what you're getting into. Once you walk in though, it has a great vibe of sports, TVs and bar atmosphere. It's a smaller space but laid out well. Service (Josh) was great and very attentive- gave some recommendations. It was not busy when we were there so food/drinks were quick. We had a burger, chicken sandwich, wrap and mac and cheese - little bit of everything and cleaned the plates. Each item was tasty and good size. Fries, Sweet Potato fries and tots all nice sides. Would stop in the again, worked out great. There is an outdoor patio on the side. read more

Went to Sundown Saloon the night before Thanksgiving on Wednesday for dinner. It is a small but happening joint. They have a bar and some high top tables for seating. They host activities at night - for example, Wednesday (when we went) is Trivia Night. The service was great - given it being trivia night, it was pretty loud so kind of hard to communicate but they managed. We ordered the pretzel bites for our appetizer and for meals, quite a few burgers and the steak philly. Everything was hot and delicious!! The fries come in baskets which is cute from a presentation standpoint, but also great to keep your fries from getting wet or soggy from juices/sauces, etc. (that's always the worst)! So, if you're looking for a local, lively spot with potential for entertainment this is a great place to check out or make a regular spot. As mentioned, when there is something happening, it can get pretty loud so if you're looking for an intimate experience, you may want to go earlier/before the entertainment starts. read more

What a hidden gem for HHI. Nothing quite like it for a cozy, kind of "neighborhood tavern" kind of place. Not "shishi" or overly trendy like much of the island. We loved the blackened chicken sandwich with a great aoili. The burger sounds like it is a "must" upon our next visit. Service is exceptional for anyplace we've been. We've been coming to Hilton Head regularly for a few years now. Recently, we have become part time residents. It's amazing to me how many restaurants there are in Hilton Head that we've not yet tried. There are still some real hidden gems out there and THIS is one of them. A person we met randomly said "have you ever tried Sunset Saloon...best burgers in town and among the best anywhere". Well, we had not heard of them but, we were compelled to try this place out on their strong and convincing recommendation. They were absolutely spot on with their assessment of this place. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner and had a really nice conversation with her. We learned of her passion very quickly and it was inspiring. The food was amazing with many unique options for burger toppings. The cheese curds and chili was absolutely epic as well. It was just a home run all the way around with great food, great value, great atmosphere, and great service. This will always be on our list each trip we make down. read more

They forgot my fries (which i totally understand, I was in the service industry for a long time) but when I asked for them the bartender about them he never even went back to check on them so I just dealt without. Definitely feels like you'll get sub-par service if you're not a regular, considering the 3 couples that came in after me got served before me even though we were all sitting at the bar. Side Caesar salad was TINY, especially for $5. The patrons at the bar seemed nice enough, although very chatty and made it very apparent of their far-right political stance. Which of course is nothing on the business, but if that's not the environment you're interested in I suggest you look elsewhere. read more

We've been here several times over the last few months and will continue to return. Have always been greeted, seated and had excellent service/attention. The food is consistently tasty. We've tried quite a few items on the menu and they've all been great. We have been at lunch or late afternoon and the place is usually pretty quiet, maybe another table or two and a few at the bar. We did go once on a Sunday early evening and got seated at one of the last tables. The staff has always been super welcoming and very accommodating. We keep wondering when this place is going to get so busy that it's tough to get into. I realize there are a lot of choices for eats on the island and this is not near the beach- but still, this place is great and shouldn't be overlooked if you're in town. Googled "best burger in Hilton Head" and that brought us to Sundown Saloon. Whoever wrote that was right! I ordered the Saloon Burger which was awesome...loaded with all sorts of goodies...bacon jam, caramelized onions, bacon. Sweet potato fries were great. My husband had the French Dip and Mac & Cheese. Thumbs up again. I also want talk about the staff. They made us feel like one of the locals who filled the place for Music Trivia night.
