SUNdeVICH opened a food truck and debuted at the opening of the New York Avenue Beach Bar. A little different than the actual restaurant which takes vibrant global flavors and turns them into sandwiches, the SUNdeVICH truck plays off some more traditional regional favorites. All sandwiches are served on a baguette made specifically for SUNdeVICH, using their own recipe and supporting their claim to be local and green by using a local bakery. The BBQ Pulled Pork was loaded with meat, but the Chorizo link -- with a burst of added flavor from the chimichurri sauce -- stole my heart. For just $5 each, and with a condiment bar well stocked with different mustards and hot peppers to customize your meal, these sandwiches are not to miss. The Peel and Eat Shrimp came about eight to an order with a thick and flavorful creole remoulade -- also for just $5! But beware, you do have to peel them yourself...they've been beheaded but still have their legs (and better looking legs than a lot of the folks at the beach...bar). The NYABB plans to rotate food trucks, so I'm not sure where this truck will be when they aren't there, particularly at lunch during the week. Overall, very well done for a truck on opening day, as service was great with a quick turn around for food when in high demand by beach-goers, and it just tastes great. i've been to this truck on a number of occasions and have always had nice, little sandwich served on a baguette while sometimes accompanied with a fresh, homemade soup, but i have never been motivated to write a review........ until today. i just finished off their creation called the Havana, which is a spin on a Cuban sandwich, but they make their version with shredded, roasted pork, gruyère cheese, pickles, and dijonnaise [[i assume that they combine some dijon mustard with hollandaise sauce and are not using some corporate, mayo-like product from a giant bottle]] all packed together, like a bundle of juicy delight, into a sliced baguette. note - when i say juicy, i mean juicy. grab a bunch of napkins when you order this sandwich, because it will drip as copiously as a slumlord's leaky faucet as you eat it. another note - most of their sandwiches are a bit diminutive in nature, but this is the biggest sandwich that i have ever eaten from this truck. if you are suffering from hunger pains - this is the sandwich you want to get. one more note - i also had a bowl (16 oz [they also have 8 oz available - separate or combo package]) of tomato soup with the Havana and i think it was one of the most awesome (yes, grammar fascists, i just wrote 'most awesome.' i claim poetic license, so blow me) tomato soups that i have ever consumed in my life time. it was 16 ounces of fresh, lumpy yet supple, and vibrant yet subtle, tomato liquid satisfaction. last note - you should also try the Kingston, if at all possible. they really deliver on the finely spiced, jerk chicken which contrasts nicely, much to my surprise, with the pineapple salsa and garlic mayo. it is so good that it'll make you want to convert to Rastafari. that is, if you *could* convert to Rastafari............ moving on. truly, the last note - there's nothing really to move on to, because it seems that this truck will be "hibernating" for the winter, but if the weather is nice, keep an eye out for these guys - they make some good soups and sandwiches. other than that - hope for a speedy Spring. read more

3.5 stars Since I love SUNdeVICH's brick and mortar shop so much, I just had to try their mobile food truck option. In terms of taste, the sandwiches I tried here have been phenomenal. The chorizo is flavorful and moist and the definite frontrunner of the group. I also liked the Havana, a pulled pork take on a classic Cuban sandwich. And of course, they have their famous bread. At $6+tax for a 6" sandwich, they're one of the cheaper food trucks since the prices have been going up. However, there is one major negative that knocks them down - they are majorly lacking in portion size. I actually finished one of these sandwiches while walking to my desk from L'enfant plaza it was so small. I should have ordered two! And I was definitely hungry again before the work day was over. Overall, great if you want a small lunch or snack, but I'll keep going to the storefront if I want a real meal. read more

Sandwiches often get a bad rap. I usually hear them chided as being boring, bland, and reminders of soggy, sad, elementary school brown bag memories. I had my first experience with SUNdeVICH about a year ago when I had a sandwich from their shop in Shaw. It was the Havana and I think I died for a brief moment when I first had it. For such a simple sandwich of roast pork, gruyere, pickles, mustard, and mayo, they managed to turn it into an express ticket to Yum-Town. So with this initial memory in mind, I had a small heart attack when I saw there was a SUNdeVICH truck at Farragut Square. I knew I had to have it. My choice this time was a Kingston - jerk chicken, pineapple salsa, salad greens, spicy slaw, and garlic mayo. Let's begin with the basics: the bread. Most of my bad sandwich memories stem from sad, wimpy, airy bread with no texture or flavour to speak of (looking at you, Subway). Much like the bread at the SUNdeVICH shop, the bread here is top notch: crusty, chewy, and robust enough to withstand the fillings and spreads being put into it without turning into soup. The fillings were also good - the chicken was juicy and tender, though I expected more punch from "jerk" chicken. The greens? They were nice and crisp while the salsa had big, juicy chunks of pineapple. As for the spicy slaw, I couldn't really distinguish it from the rest of the sandwich, so let's say it and the sandwich as a whole is "American Spicy" - aka somewhere between celery and cracked black pepper. I came post rain storm to the truck so it only took me a minute to get my sandwich; as such, I can't say much regarding how efficient they are during an actual busy lunch hour. What I can say is that the sandwiches on the truck are smaller than the ones at their shop. Yes, the price is indeed smaller, $7 for a smallish sandwich, but it is still not cheap for the actual amount of food. I just remind myself it's about quality, not quantity. Overall, I recommend trying out the SUNdeVICH Truck if you happen to run into it. It's not quite at the level of its permanent location big brother, but they make a darn good sandwich. read more

Any place that has chorizo on their menu usually gets an automatic five stars from me, unless you're SUNdeVICH. I eagerly ordered the Madrid, but the chorizo in the sandwich was quite the disappointment. It was completely burnt. Though I always order my burgers well done, there is a difference between meat being fully cooked and completely charred meat. Every bite I took went from "yum, chorizo" to "yuck, coal." I guess I should have scraped off the charred layer, but I ordered a sandwich so I wouldn't need utensils. I realize that burning something could be a one time occurrence, so I went back to their truck the next day, but ordered the Capri instead. I am SO glad I ate here today. I wasn't really hungry anyway so it wasn't all that painful to throw out the disgusting sandwich I bought. I had the Madrid - all ingredients that I love - and ugh...bleah! I took more than a few bites to see if it got better - oh, it got so much worse. Having never been to the storefront, I was excited to see them show up at Union Station. All the sandwiches seem interesting and I've heard they use great ingredients. The guy taking orders was very friendly and informative. I went with the Madrid, which was chorizo and chimichurri. As expected, the chorizo was high quality. I think it could have used some grill time to give the casing some char, but that's a personal textural preference. The chimichurri was great. The bread was...interesting. Very chewy on the inside, not as crispy as a regular baguette on the outside. Probably very good for soaking up juices. I'm dinging them big time on portion size to price ratio, keeping in mind that I am a pretty big dude. The sandwich was six dollars and the sandwich was five to six inches. I'm sitting here forty minutes later and I'm already hungry. For a dollar more, I get a sandwich at the Rolling Ficelle that does not give me this problem. I've now tried this truck three of four times and come to one resounding conclusion: stick with the sandwiches that have egg on them. Normally, I do not like eggs on a sandwich unless it is, indeed, a breakfast sandwich. No, it doesn't make any sense that I would eat the exact same thing at 8AM only to reject it at 1PM but, there you have it, I am desperately flawed. HOWEVER. This truck is an exception. I love their egg sandwiches and even love them when I scrape the egg off of the sandwich. My favorites, in this order, are: Paris, Mexico City and Zurich. The first is so simple (eggs, ham, gruyere cheese, tomato and greens with a dijonaisse type dressing) but it is delicious with top-notch and fresh ingredients. The second is fun and similar to the Paris only with chipotle butter and avocados. The last is an excellent choice for vegetarians and has apple compote on it...I like it more in the winter than summer but it is very good. The other egg option is the Milan which is good but I find it a bit overwhelming with Gorgonzola. You better really, REALLY, like Gorgonzola cheese if you go this route. Egg is over-easy, lightly fried with a runny yolk. Yummy. The other sandwiches? I want to like them so much more. The Jamaican, which some rave about here, is indeed stuffed with yummy pulled pork goodness but all the other ingredients are spread on the bottom of the bread. Thus, you get a huge mouthful of somewhat dry pork and then have to take a bite from the underside of the bun to get the rest. I disassembled my sandwich and mixed everything up and put it back on the bun. I would rather not have to do that. The others...I have only tried the Kingston which, like others have said, was DRY. I did have a German-themed sausage sandwich here (Berliner, maybe?) that was OK but still was a bit dry. The combos I avoid because I have never had anything but a watery soup experience here. Overall, I will chase them down for their egg sandwiches at any time of the day. The others? Eh, hit or miss. read more

The sandwiches with egg (runny yolk) in them are the best ones. I once had one that didn't include egg and it wasn't all that great. I wouldn't say these sandwiches are small, they just aren't PACKED with high quantities of ingredients, which is quite nice. They can be messy sandwiches, but they're delicious. And you won't feel heavy or gross after eating one of these. Bread is the chewy kind, but in a good way. Truck staff is friendly and service is pretty quick! read more

holy YUM. i'm new to food truck-ery and i am so glad this place was the 2nd stop on my food truck quest. it was parked right in farragut square, a few blocks from my work, and on a perfect sunny day today nonetheless. i got the lunchbox combo, which for $12, was perfect. sandwich, coke, sweet potato chips and a small potato soup. i got the "zurich," which although is categorized as "breakfast," it is still amazing for lunch! it was: eggs (done perfectly!), arugula, gruyere and apple compote (which is basically like apple sauce). the bread was great, too. it was so filling and so delicious. i highly recommend this food truck! and, i saw that they support local business/agriculture (on their website) which means all of what i ate today was locally grown :) gotta love that! 5 stars! i'll be back! read more

I believe I've tried the Kingston, the Zurich, and the Mexico City. All were good, but I'd recommend the jerk chicken-based Kingston in particular -- the garlic mayo and pineapple is delicious, and by sandwich standards it's legitimately spicy. You can find bigger portions at other trucks in the park, but $7 isn't a bad price and the sandwiches are about right for my appetite. read more

The mexico city sandwich was awesome. The chipotle adds a little heat that fits the sandwich very well. The avocado was the perfect fit for the sandwich. These sandwiches are not big but they dont lack in flavor and I find them to be the perfect size for lunch. The bread is pretty great as well. read more

Decided to stop at the SUNdeVICH food truck on my way to another lunch spot in DC. I had the restaurant on my radar for awhile and was glad to see the food truck nearby. I ordered the Jamaican Jerk sandwich meal with soda and gherkin pickles for $9.00. The sandwich was underwhelming from the quality of the doughy bread, mild flavored jerk chicken, and not-so-complex pineapple salsa. I'm glad I tried a new food truck, but I won't be returning. I have heard such great things about the store but I never made it to Shaw so I had to try the sandwiches when the food truck came around. My friend and I got the Isfahan and the Kingston and split both. I thought they both tasted great and had a lot of filling and the Kingston had a lot of chicken. My friend enjoyed the Kingston but did not like the Isfahan as much which is kind of funny because I think I liked the Isfahan slightly better! The only weird thing about the sandwich is the bread!! The bread is so chewy that it is hard to bite through which is really awkward when you are eating with coworkers! In terms of value, I thought it was a good deal and it did a good job of filling me up, but the sandwich was a lot smaller than I expected! I love sandwiches, so the food truck gurus in my office said I needed to try SUNdeVICH. I went today and had the Mexico City -- ham, eggs, avocado, chipotle butter and tomato (which I omitted) on a baguette. It was divine. As many have commented the eggs give the sandwich a nice rich flavor, and I also liked the that the sandwich was not soggy (I love Wassub but it's hard to finish the sandwich because of the sogginess factor), and that it was filling without being too huge of a sandwich. I also like that you can get a combo with either chips or tasty gherkins. I will definitely be back! read more

I had been looking at this truck for awhile but Ficelle always drew me away. However, today there wasn't so much competiiton so I gave them a try. I tried the havana and man, that is a delicious sandwich. My only suggestion would be having an option to have the bread toasted but it was crazy good. And I'm not sure what all the complaints on potion size are about, I was actually taking out some of the meat by the end cause it was SO MUCH. I got a bag of chips and only ate about half of it I was so full at the end. I will definitely be adding this truck to the rotation! read more

found the sundevich truck on mass ave. ordered the "havana" which is pulled pork, pickle, cheese. i've eaten at all the trucks, and this is quite good. the pork is tender and perfectly seasoned. the baguette is fantastic. the size is a bit small, though not a terrible deal for $6 (should be closer to $4). i was still hungry after. this baby is about half the size of a regular sub, however has good hunk of meat and not too much bread. it is soaking with sauce. overall, an excellent sandwich. worth a stop. read more

I just had the Mexico City, and frankly, it may have been better than the Milan sandwich that previously stole my heart. Here is my advice to anyone who orders a Sundevich sandwich from the food truck - make sure you can eat it immediately. One of the best features of the Mexico City was a perfectly runny yolk, and if you don't eat your sandwich within 10 minutes of its creation, you are probably going to get a hardened egg yolk instead. In terms of the flavor profile they are creating, that's not going to cut it for this sandwich. Think of it as the sandwich equivalent to sushi; you want to eat your sushi immediately and that is the same trick here. Well, that and avocado butter that will make your heart flutter. In fact, you probably don't have a heart if you don't like the Mexico City. In that event, you are but a walking corpse and you probably smell like one too. Gross. But that's the only gross thing that will happen at Sundevich because their sandwiches are the truth. read more

Hit up the truck today when I saw them at State Dept, got the mexico city again, but sadly the over easy eggs were over cooked so it was not as overly decadent as last time, but the line was faster, really fast actually. I guess they have taken to prepping the eggs and such ahead of time. I never write reviews, but this was a Horrendous Experience. Got the Mexico City. While the ingredients were decent, the portions were a joke. I eat at the food trucks at least twice a week, and this was the most pathetically paltry excuse for a ham sandwich (one slice of ham) I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong: I get the whole idea of premium-ingredient pricing that comes with any "gourmet" sandwhich shop, but this came from the truck (an extension of the shop with significantly reduced overhead); they could at least state on the menu that the $7 "Mexico City" (with egg, ham, avocado, chipolte butter) is actually served on a plain, untoasted, 4-inch long "Subway"-style bun by stand-offish hipsters who appear to but mildly loathe the prospect of interacting with customers. And one final detail that I could not make up if I tried: I actually had to go buy a second lunch elsehwere, as the Sundevich meal -- all three bites of it -- left me perhaps even hungrier than when I'd set out to get lunch in the first place. Had my first sandwich from the SUNdeVICH truck, and it surely will be my last. I'd been craving a Cubano sandwich for a while, so I ordered the Havana, only to discover when I got back to my office that it bears almost no resemblance to the real thing. If you're looking for something authentic, skip this. The pork is shredded, not sliced, and if you park it anywhere for a little bit will offload a pool of grease. The bread isn't toasted in any way--not pressed, certainly, as a Cubano is--and the Gruyere (another chef's twist) is so thin and so sparse as to be virtually unnoticeable. Finally, from my perspective, the placement of bread-and-butter pickles on the sandwich (rather than dills sliced thin lengthwise) gives it a wholly unpleasant taste, and aftertaste. The high point of my meal was the San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa (Blood Orange) soda I had with the sandwich. Fortunately there was enough of it to somewhat kill off the bad taste this soggy, greasy sandwich left in my mouth. read more
