I hadn't been to this winery in a couple of…read moreyears and I was a little sad that the older gentleman I met here who was the owner had passed away. He may have appeared not nice but when I visited he was so sweet to me. I circled back and did a tasting and it was great. They do cater to the dryer palate, which I love. It was lovely trying some of the familiar ones and during my tasting, I remembered why I loved this place. The ladies that assisted me in my tasting were very knowledgeable and had excellent conversation. It was such a pleasant experience. They did let me know that the vineyard will be sold in October and hopefully, someone will continue it on. It so chill and lovely and I don't want to see it go away. If you are in the Lexington area, it's just 15 min away from Childress. I always say to support local if you can. If I had the money, I'd buy it lol. I don't want to see it go away. And those that work here, love it. If you're in the area, check it out. Even if you think you don't like wine or have a sweet palate, they will accommodate. I'm glad I stopped in. Cheers! The music was good, and so was the wine; it was definitely worth a stop.

A group that I belong to took a tour of Linbrook Heritage Estate near Greensboro and High Point,…read moreNC. It's out in the middle of nowhere, and few people even in the local area know much about it. The short version of how it came about: Jerry Neal co-founded RF Micro Devices (parts made by the company, now merged with Quorvo, are still used in most cells phones) , made a bunch of money. He bought several large tracts of land in Trinity, NC, near where his family have lived for more than 200 years, and he and wife LInda Neal set about building a 32,000 sq. ft. mansion, Linbrook Hall. In 2004, they completed this huge house, designed in the Classic Revival style and furnished with antiques collected by the owners over the years. For whatever reason, once the house was completed, the Neals decided they didn't want to live there but stayed in an unpretentious house nearby. (Perhaps, as a Quaker, Jerry Neal decided it wasn't a proper place for humble folks to live.) So, they have never lived in the mansion that took six years to build, Instead, they've made Linbrook Hall into a community place, a wedding venue and a site for corporate meeting. The estate is open to the public, although the hours and requirements for tours make seeing part of the estate a little less convenient than it could be. There are several parts to the estate, which, again is on different tracts of land in the same general area: Linbrook Hall, one of the largest private homes in the Southeast is on about 400 acres; Hoover House, originally built as a simple two-room farm house by Jerry Neal's maternal great-great grandparents and now restored; and the Neal Agricultural and Industrial Museum. This museum features among other things 22 meticulously restored John Deere tractors. The Neals live near the museum. Our group had a guided tour of three of the four floors of Linbrook Hall (the fourth, top floor is used as offices of Jerry Neal and the Linbook staff and also has a collection of antique radios, but this level is not open to the public). Then we had an excellent catered lunch in the formal dining room, which brings to mind the formal dining room of Biltmore House although it is not as large or as grand). Then we drove to the Historic Hoover House for a quick tour and then visited the Agricultural and Industrial Museum. I think the John Deere Tractor Museum was my favorite, with its perfectly restored tractors plus John Deere collectibles and memorabilia (I believe Jerry Neal is on the board of John Deere.) Altogether the tours and lunch took about four hours. Our cost was $70 per person, including the lunch with complimentary wine, and tours of the three main parts of the estate. That's a bargain! Regular admission prices for all of the Estate total $38, with reduced prices for those 65+ and youths. It's too bad that this attraction is not better known. You'd really have to do some marketing to bring people off the interstates to this very rural area. But I thought it was a wonderful way to spend four or five hours. Our tour guide, Allison Dark, was excellent.

It was advertised that you could take a train to Salisbury, NC and then the festival was in walking distance. If you drove, you'd have to look for parking in the area and walk to the event. My friend and I arrived around noon. This. Was a good time, but in the fire I'd ago In my opinion they spaced out the different vendors well so it wasn't too crowded. You were able to move through the areas easily. At times, you would have to wait for people to move, but this is expected with any festival. I liked that their website listed the vendor participating and if the vendor created a Cheerwine themed item/dish. I believe it would've ben helpful it their website also included a map of where each vendor was so you could head to the vendor you wanted immediately. There was a main location at the festival that sold Cheerwine merchandise such as: beach towels, stickers, hats, t-shirts, and displays. They had a cash and card line. Some vendors took cash, but not all so it is good to have both on you. There were live performances occurring in their center city park. I was not prepared well for the event as I literally decided to go day of. In the future I'll make sure to pack a lawn towel or small chair to sit in the park and come earlier in the day when the event first starts so it's not as hot outside.

Saw lots of Cheerwine merch/logos everywhere but not Cheerwine itself. This festival is extremely crowded and there are long lines for absolutely everything, do know that going into this one. Bring cash, you'll need it. The Deets: My friends and I made plans to hit the The Cheerwine Festival in Salisbury, NC this year. Cheerwine is a local/regional soft drink favorite, a black cherry flavored soda. Cheerwine has been made since 1917 and has been produced by the same family in North Carolina for all those years (big accomplishment in the food/beverage industry). I've been a Cheerwine fan since childhood so I was up for going to a festival bearing its name. We went down and back on Amtrak as there is a train station near to the downtown area the festival is held. I recommend going by train if possible as finding parking is not that easy for this event. Salisbury is not a huge town so you would expect that to be so. If you are not a fan of big crowds and long lines, then this festival is not for you. This festival is very "people-y" and there are long lines for EVERYTHING...food, beer/beverages, merchandise, craft/art/novelty items, cash machines (bring cash, most things here are not cheap)...everything. Of course the sound stage had a crowd around it as well. We even ducked into a local bottle shop to find some peace (see my prior review for this business) which we indeed found. My pics I took are from a pocket of peace I found outside of the crowded area. Of note, I did see that there were plenty of port-a-potties everywhere, even down alleys between buildings. While I saw Cheerwine logos and merchandise a-plenty at the festival, I really can't recall seeing any actual Cheerwine itself. Sad face. Lots of beer opportunities...not Cheerwine though. If you love those crowded street festivals, this event is your golden ticket. I found it was great to visit and experience but I'm not sure I would go out of my way to come back again.
