I am kind of torn writing this. I have had good and bad experiences at this location. I have been a member for almost a year. I usually come in during busy times and the staff is very helpful. I have referred many friends to Sun Tan City. This review is for the people I brought in with me, because they have only had bad experiences. A couple of weeks ago, I brought my boyfriend and my 50 year old mother in to tan. My mother was getting ready for a big event and wanted to "double dip" that is using a tanning bed and then a spray tan. We came into the store at 7:25 P.M. They both got new packages and were all ready to tan. I showed my mother how to use the bed, because she has never tanned before. After her tan she went into the spray tan. She had taken awhile getting dressed and it was about 7:50 P.M. Instantly the girl at the front desk, Brianna, became hostile. When I came out of my tanning bed she said my mom wanted me to show her the spray tan. My mom explained the girl was very rude and impatient with her. When my mom was done, I walked to the back to rush her along because it was 7:59 P.M. When I started walking to the back Brianna and the other girl with the pony tail and glasses decided to start mopping right by the door my mom was about to come out of. They had not mopped anywhere else and that room is near the center of the store.. They slopped a huge puddle right by her door, I am assuming to let us know they closed one miniature before and we had over stepped out welcome. By the time we got to the car it was 8:03 P.M. which means we inconvenienced them for 3 extra minutes and we were treated very poorly. The next time we all came in, we came earlier this time and with less to do. Brianna rolled her eyes at us, glared and said in a very hostile and passive tone, "How can I help you". Sorry, Sun Tan City, I believe you are a great location with a bad employee. If you plan on closing earlier than 8, please let us know not to come past seven and please change your hours on the door so costumers are not mislead when searching for tanning salons that are open after work hours. read more

As I stood in line for more than ten minutes today while the employee signed someone up for a tanning membership and talked them into lotion I realized how it makes no sense to have fast beds but to make customers wait in line for so long and take our time talking us into purchasing products even when ours are new and full. They don't do anything fast they don't accept cash and it's pretty ghetto read more

I have yet to have a bad experience since returning - I originally went to the Ankeny location & moving had resulted in being able to go to Des Moines. It is SO incredible, the beds lights are actually bright & your time is genuinely well spent there - meaning, there's no need to overcompensate by adding minutes to attempt to get your actually glow. I got to unfreeze my account & start up at my incredibly low price from 3 years ago with no hiccups. Everyone was incredibly kind & the girls were super knowledgable. I truly look forward to coming in. read more

When I left Des Moines in 2012, I was a regular at Visual Impact on their Tuesday Specials. I recently returned to visit Des Moines for the first time since then. I flew in town for a wedding and wasnt able to get some color before the event so I figured I'd get a tan at Visual Impact like I did years ago. I started to freak out when I found out all Visual Impact locations had shut down. Thankfully, my sister referred me to Sun Tan City. I came in just after opening on a Saturday morning in desperation to get some color, and the gal at the front desk (I believe her name was Brianna) was super helpful and informative! Its been a while since Ive tanned, so I hadn't built a base and didn't want to tan too hard, too fast on the beds since I tend to get red if I try to build color too aggressively. Brianna suggested I do the Double Dip, where you lay in a bed first to get a little bit of a base and open up your pores, then hop into the spray tan booth for more immefiate color. I was a little reluctant and opted for the Instant tan bed at 6 minutes and the lightest color for the mystic tan, since I didnt have time to shop for new make up and didnt want to venture too far off from the color of foundation I used. So I got the instant tanning bed / spray tan cocktail, and on top of that also had 3 packets of gel, lotion, and a spray tan extender...all for about $29! I believe its about $5 more than just a level 3 tanning bed session, so it was a better deal as far as the cost comparison and my goal of trying to get some good color asap. The salon itself was SUPER CLEAN! The tanning bed I used was the one in the 1st room right next to the reception desk. Initially, I only requested 6 minutes, but I felt soo relaxed in the bed that time flew by so fast, so I requested to use up the remainder of the allowed time. There was a phone in the room, which I found super helpful as I was able to call the front desk instead of standing naked behind the door, peeking my head out while trying to get someone's attention. Now onto the spray tan - I love the dispensed barrier lotions. Other places Ive been to for spray tans provide bottles, which get messy and clumsy considerinf you have goopy hand - so I really appreciated that little touch with the dispensers. I also really love the spray booth with the automated prompts to get into position. Other booths I've used simply beep and you're supposed to remember to turn, which was confusing if you dont spray that often. Overall, I had a great overall experience and really appreciate the customer service and also appreciate the facilty & equipment. Thank you Sun Tan City and THANK YOU BRIANNA!!! read more

Gals that work there are totally awesome. But after being a customer over three years I put my account on hold only to come back and be told that they took monies from my acct. That they would NOT give back but offered a gift card to buy THEIR products! Bad customer care and they stole from me! Had to fix by going through my bank. Mind you this comes from higher up the gals at the store are awesome to say the least! Will NOT return . read more

Sun Tan City has a policy that as long as you cancel prior to the following month, they will not debt your checking account. I signed the form in person on April 15th. They debited my checking account on May 1st. I got back from vacation on the 2nd and went in for a refund. Their only recourse was to "email a manager". Didn't hear back for a week. Called them. They said they hadn't heard back. Then they said an email wasn't sent. I asked for my money back, they said would send another email. Didn't hear back for a week. Drive to location. New gal called the manager. The manager wouldn't get on the phone with me, said they had to call the district manager. They finally called me back, and said I would have to drive to the Ankeny location to pick up a check. THIS is the only customer service provided by THEIR mistake. I realize it's 78$. But that could mean a lot of money to some people. Especially the millennials that work there. They probably owe me that in gas alone for time and gas. If you go there and you cancel, make them enter into their system before you leave. Because it's a nightmare trying to get the debits to stop, and they provide NO customer service whatsoever in return for their mistake and your time, gas, and energy. Never again. read more

Absolutely ZERO STARS. My friend went to get her spray tan today and accidentally left her wedding ring (given to her from her mother; and her mother received it from her grandmother). She called to see if they put it to the side and said no two other people had been through the booth and it's just missing. The police WERE involved-still nothing showed up. FINALLY after an hour, police involvement, and a phone call from the husband. The WORKERS "FOUND" her wedding ring and Fitbit and returned it. The workers had the ring and Fitbit the WHOLE time. Thankfully it was returned but I will NEVER go back. read more

Honestly, If I could give a 0 star review I would. I was told I was getting signed up for a tan till the end of the year and assumed that was the package I bought turns out I was signed up for auto pay on a contract that I did not realize was happening. I kindly called and asked for the mistake to be fixed the day after they charged me in January as it was a new year and I had only THOUGHT I was tanning till Dec2018 and apparently my request for reimbursement was denied! WOW NEVER HAVE I BEEN DECIEVED LIKE THIS KEEP THE MONEY!! CAUSE I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO LIARS AND THIEVES read more

The girl at the front desk was very knowledgeable & I told her what I wanted to do & she gave me all my pricing options. She was very professional, the place was clean. I did the cocktail (bed then spray tan)...I got such a great tan. I will most definitely come here again & recommend to anyone. read more

Apparently they don't follow their hours of operation because it's 8:40 am and here I sit despite the sign on the door and the recording on their phone saying they open at 8 on Saturdays. Waste of a 20 minute drive. read more
