When my hair was longer I tended to cut it myself because I'd had way too many bad experiences with stylists not listening and giving me terrible haircuts. Now that I have shorter hair, I needed someone who wouldn't make me cry! Joy is the first stylist I've had who listens and has actually given me great haircuts. I've loved both my haircuts with her and will definitely be back. The only thing I feel weird about is the automatic tipping calculator on her payment screen. I know you aren't supposed to feel obligated to tip a salon owner because the entire fee goes to them already (eg: they aren't renting their space). But I can feel self-imposed pressure (because it's on the screen, not because of Joy) to add a tip anyway. Otherwise, no complaints!

I simply wanted to go darker by adding lowlights to my natural copper hair. I showed a reference photo and was told that to achieve the look, I would need highlights first and then an all-over color. I also asked for layers and curtain bangs without losing too much length (my hair was last measured at 30 inches). I am 17 and was getting my hair done for my birthday. I made it very clear that I wanted to keep everything as natural as possible--no heavy or extreme colors, and nothing so dark that it would look unnatural as it grew out. At first, I liked the color when it was wet. Once it was dried and styled, the lighting in her studio made it look close to what I had imagined, so I initially believed it was done correctly. However, I also wanted a butterfly cut with layers while keeping my length. Joy responded with, "That's not happening. I don't care what you want." After drying, my mother and I had to practically fight just to get her to blend my curtain bangs and make them wispy (I have very thick hair). When my mom tried to stand up for me, Joy became combative and rude. Every time I mentioned layers, she would say things like, "No, you don't want layers. I promise layers won't look good. I'm not doing layers." I felt pressured to trust her because she said she's been doing hair since 1993, and her reviews initially seemed good. After looking again, none of the reviews are recent (all over three years old), and the most recent one is extremely negative. I paid $120 for what I thought I loved--aside from not getting layers--but the moment I left, I felt overwhelming dread. In the car, I noticed my ends were the exact same color as my original hair, even though she supposedly did an all-over copper brown. My roots are a very dark, unnatural red under my top layer of hair, almost peekaboo-style, which is absolutely not what I wanted. The colors do not blend, and I can't even see the highlights she claimed to put in. After researching, it's clear the color was not left on long enough. The color on the left side of my roots was left much longer than the right side, and my ends--like I mentioned--are completely unchanged. She applied color, aggressively "massaged" it in, washed her hands and bowl, and then rinsed and shampooed my hair. The color was on my ends for maybe five minutes. The entire appointment lasted from 5:45 PM to 8:24 PM and felt rushed and extremely unprofessional. As someone who has never done anything to their hair besides simple trims, I didn't know what was normal or what to question. I felt forced into what she wanted instead of what I asked for. She was rude to my mother when she tried to advocate for me, and now my hair is uneven, poorly colored, and badly blended--especially the bangs. She was still paid $120 for a service I am deeply unhappy with, and this experience has caused me severe emotional distress. I've been crying for hours. I will never be going back to Joy, and I do not recommend her services. Also after my mother and I did some more research, all her hair images are from Pinterest. We reversed imaged searched her pictures they are ALL from Pinterest. I also want to note that her house smelled of marijuana.

Booking Hair and Makeup by Tanya was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding!…read moreTanya's team, which included two talented artists based on the size of our party (eight people), was absolutely terrific. They arrived promptly and prepared with everything one could possibly need, including professional, appropriate lighting. This attention to detail and expert efficiency meant we even finished ahead of schedule, which was a huge bonus on a busy morning. Every single person in my bridal party, including myself, was absolutely amazed at how flawless their makeup turned out. They are true artists who listen to what you want--they completely nailed my "natural-glam bridal look"! Not only is their work top-tier, but they are also genuinely sweet and calming presences to have in the room. The quality of the work and the overall experience were completely worth the investment. I would highly, highly recommend Hair and Makeup by Tanya to any bride looking for a perfect, stress-free beauty experience!

Tanya didn't personally do my wedding hair and makeup--instead, I booked through HMU by Tanya to…read morework with other artists from her team for my wedding outside of Bozeman this summer. While the artist I ended up working with was professional, the way the business side was handled left me feeling misled and incredibly disappointed. First, I did not know which specific artist I'd be matched with when I booked, but I expected that everyone from Tanya's team would offer a similar style of hair makeup to what is advertised on her instagram, especially for the $1,500 luxury price point. After I specifically asked them who the artist would be, they sent me her portfolio page (I was matched with a local artist near my location by Bozeman). When I saw the photos, I was shocked. The difference in quality was striking--what I saw promoted on the Tanya's page was modern and professional, but the artist I was assigned had a completely different approach that didn't align with the look I was promised. After requesting someone else to do my makeup, Tanya's assistant Christine introduced the option of working with a different artist. I was told she'd be doing both my trial and wedding day makeup. But weeks later (just days after the 90-day cancellation window in their contract had already passed) I was told she might not be available for the trial and that her travel would cost an additional $508--which was a complete surprise to me. This fee was never disclosed in the original invoice, and I only found out about it because I asked. Had I known that upfront, I would have made a very different decision and likely would have cancelled altogether. When I voiced my concerns, I didn't receive a phone call or genuine apology, or any real effort to make things right. Instead, I got a string of generic responses from Tanya's assistant Christine that did not address the specific issues I was raising. The replies felt impersonal and scripted, which added to my frustration. I felt like as soon as the cancellation window passed, there was no concern for my experience as a customer. After several frustrating emails, they finally said they would ask the artist who would be traveling to waive her travel fee (which I felt was unfair to the artist because it was their mistake), and she agreed--however, they would be assigning a different artist for my makeup trial, which I feel defeats the purpose of the trial altogether. Thankfully, the artist who did my trial was wonderful and ended up doing both hair and makeup for my wedding day. She stepped up and took care of everything, including managing communication with Tanya and her assistant to take the stress off of me before my wedding day. I'm grateful to her, but the situation should never have escalated to that point. For a service that ended up costing $1,500 (a splurge I saved up for for months) I expected a high-end, low-stress, professional experience. What I got was a disorganized and impersonal process that caused so much unnecessary stress in the weeks leading up to my wedding. If I could change one thing about my wedding, it would be to save myself the financial and emotional stress of working with them and find another option for hair and makeup services.
