Oh 2020. What a year. With everything going on in the world as of late, I made the decision in mid May to rent a beach house for a week. Given my late timing, the options were slim. Grill, Hot Tub, Ocean front & a pool were a must, as well as a few bedrooms. I ended up finding Casa Costa Rica and it seemed ideal for us to share with another couple. I invited a good friend to join me, and it was decided. We were headed to the outer banks as soon as Fairfax County Public Schools were out on June 12th and would be staying for a week! Upon our arrival at Casa Costa Rica, a property managed by Sun Realty of Salvo, NC we were initially impressed. It is a massive property with five bedrooms, five bathrooms (+ 2 half), and a private pool. The walk out to the beach is enjoyable and the views are spectacular. It didn't take long, however for the reality to set in. Upon our initial inspection, we found that the hot tub was leaking water. It would not hold water overnight, and when we called Sun Realty of Salvo, NC we were simply told to "Fill it up from the hose, and someone would be out to check on it". We also discovered that the gas grill worked only intermittently. A technician came to take a look at it, and generally the diagnosis was "tap this, or tap that until it works". We never heard from anyone about the hot tub. Ever. No one called us back. No one came to look at it. As a few days went by, we continued to enjoy the house, but something was clearly amiss with the fridge. We notified them on Friday that it was no longer working, and to their credit, a technician was sent out to confirm that the fridge was, in fact, dead. He left promptly after his diagnosis. More to come ... :) Find more on my blog @ https://www.sunrealtysalvo.com/

We rented WH-1044 Pelican Breeze. First time using Sun Realty and 100% the last time. Before we checked in we were told fans were running in a few rooms due to a slight leak. They were industrial sized fans. Previous renters dirty linens were left until our fourth day at the outside entrance of the house. Some beds had clean sheets put on, some didn't. Had to pull all of the bath towels from a bag, none left in our rooms. One bed still had potato chip crumbs on the sheets.... 2 windows poured water when it rained. Moldy bathrooms and disgusting air vents. Pool was NEVER cleaned before or during our stay. Hot tub jets were broken. It could be a great house with proper upkeep and maintenance. Clearly whoever owns this home and Sun Realty could care less of this homes condition.

Sitting down to dinner the first night. Nearly fell onto floor.

Rented Risky Business W-546. Felt more like camping in your creepy uncle's cabin than a luxury beach vacation. Arrived to 15 year old broken hot tub, plywood on the deteriorated, stained, ripped box springs, ants in the kitchen, unpainted plaster repairs, peeling ceiling coatings, broken kitchen chairs, clogged drains, doors unattached to closet for W/D. W/D at least 20 years old with worn off finish/bare metal spots, kitchen cabinets glued back together. Cheap plastic furniture on deck and by pool. Moldy pool toys and inflatables. Basic slum lord tactics, collect market rate rent, spend nothing on improvements. I have pics of everything.

Disgusting fridge

We arrived last night and were extremely disappointed! First the house is filthy to the point I couldn't let my baby on the floor to crawl and we all had to wear shoes because the floors are loaded with dust and sand. We later found out that the lady hadn't been here to clean so we're here with kids in someone else's filth. Secondly the pictures do NOT depict the actual conditions. There is mold on all the ac units, globs of dust hanging off the ceiling fans, worn down linoleum ,rust laden refrigerators, the filters are out of the ac units filled with dust sitting on the hearth, windows so dirty you can't even see thru them. This place is run down and depressing! I'm shocked you guys would represent such a property. We've stayed at your places several times with no trouble but this is a huge disappointment.

I feel our experience warrants this post to share with other consumers the absolute terrible experience we encountered with Sun Realty. Will never work with Sun Realty again. Their lack of empathy, poor customer service and false advertising is completely appalling. Decided to keep our 2020 reservation this summer at since the year has been a disaster with the pandemic. Was looking forward to change of scenery and getting away for the first time since pandemic. We arrive to property (Carolina in my Mind) to find it has bed bugs and was very dirty. The whole thorough cleaning for COVID was not present. Food crumbs everywhere, the previous tenants toiletries in the bathroom, food left in kitchen, etc. Downright dirty and NOT cleaned to meet CDC guidelines. We contact managers at Sun Realty to be told they have no other units for the week and we have to stay there during and after they conduct a heat treatment. They showed no empathy for the fact that if we stayed we would be living in a conditions where the home would be heated to 150 degrees. Meanwhile, the outdoor temperature was almost 100 degrees with humidity. They basically made it our problem and gave us no options for another place to stay. We were not comfortable staying in a property, one, with bed bugs and, two, where the heat treatment would be so uncomfortable for our family. We ended up spending hours on the phone and finally found a super helpful rep at Twiddy who was able to find a property that was available. Pretty much double what we paid for our initial rental. Had to come out of pocket over $10,000 to rent another unit while still trying to fight Sun Realty for our refund for the bed bug property. Had to stay in a hotel the first night as the next property was not available until the next day. All the representatives we dealt with at Sun Realty were rude and unsympathetic. I never realized how unprofessional a group of individuals could be. I kept asking them, would you want to stay and live in a place that has bed bugs? We drove eight hours to get there, unloaded and loaded the cars in 100 degree weather, had to keep hundreds of dollars of food on ice so it would not spoil for our first 24 to 48 hours we were there, were forced by Sun Realty to stay in a home with bed bugs or leave and have nowhere to go. Needless to say, our initial 48 hours of vacation were disheartening. However, thanks to Twiddy realty we were at least able to get something, even though it was double what we paid initially. Our family enjoyed our vacation. But I can tell you this, do not count on Sun Realty to offer any assistance if you get into a bind with a rental property. I will never use them again and hope that someone who reads this post will decide to use Twiddy instead of Sun Realty. It took over 3 weeks to get refunded our money and that was after countless phone calls and messages. We wrote Sun Realty and the owners of the property and asked to be compensated for at least the hotel stay, which they declined to do. Very disappointing experience and pretty much fell in line with the year of 2020. It's a good thing we checked before getting comfortable and unpacking. We are not saying this is any fault of the owners of the property. However, the owners and the property management are tasked with ensuring a property up to suitable standards. The bed where the bed bugs were found had a mattress/box spring that was duct taped in the corners. The bugs were coming out of a small opening in the tape. Someone must have taped the bed up. Thank goodness we were cautious to look all the beds over before unpacking and getting comfortable. I sure hope the previous renters to us were notified so they can check their belongings.

The building looks okay, yellow outside. Customer service is horrible tho. I don't recommend renting from the company.

This practice was quite different from my experiences with Twiddy up in Duck / Corolla where the keys were held until check-in time even when the house was already cleaned and inspected.

Everything from the process of selecting a cabana and checking on availability to arriving, staying, and checking out was smooth, simple as pie, and budget-friendly. We had our vacation dates picked out first and checked the website to see what would be available during the September 17-24 (Saturday to Saturday) week. There were plenty of options when we booked in July, but by September there were no vacancies listed on the website (though there was a sign at the cabanas themselves that said "Vacancy," so something might have opened up). The first half of the fee was due immediately, and the second half was due a month before arrival. The rates vary widely depending on the season. Ours came to about $570 for a week's stay after tax, fees, and trip insurance were all figured in, but "off season" begins in early September, thanks to potential hurricane threats. Prime season is listed in the brochure as $820.37 per week and may be more after fees. The cabanas are a mix of uniform and highly individualized. They're single-room affairs (plus a bathroom with a door, of course) on stilts -- you park underneath. They have no fewer than three decks: both front and back decks on the living floor and a third one at roof level. They all have air conditioning, a TV, and kitchen areas including a fridge and oven. They're all built of the gray, salt-blown wood that is popular all over the island. The best way to visualize the size is to think of a medium-sized dorm room with a kitchen. Beyond these details, they all have their separate personalities. The one we stayed in, Ocean's Door East (#27), had a rare two-bed setup, one of them loft-style. Most others appear to have one bed, some of them full-size and some of them queen. It was decorated with a beautiful array of beach-inspired wall knickknacks, many of which said "Welcome" on them -- and welcome we felt! The kitchen had lots of dishes and pots (but not all of the cabanas necessarily will, so come prepared!), and we were pleased to find beach chairs we could borrow. There were also a lot of children's beach toys, but again, that will vary from cabana to cabana, so don't count on it. This one allows pets, both dogs and cats, but not all of them do. We chose our cabana based on its proximity to the beach -- it was the closest one available when we booked. There is a wooden walkway that takes you over the dune, and there you are! There was always a smattering -- but not a crowd -- of people lounging, reading, fishing, beachcombing, or throwing balls for their dog. The waves were medium-height while we were there, but of course that can be variable. A convenient hose is located at the cabana end of the walkway for cleaning off sandy feet. About halfway through the week, we realized there was a hose under our cabana, too. Additional tips: Be aware that weather in this area is volatile. We had the pleasure of partly cloudy 88-degree days and rainy nights during our week, but it could just as easily storm, or a hurricane might blow through. Hatteras Island gets completely evacuated at such times, so get trip insurance. Also note that you will need to bring your own sheets, towels, and paper goods. This isn't a hotel, it's someone's beach home, so there will be imperfections in the accommodations, and you're cleaning up after yourself, ESPECIALLY right before you leave. Also, bring bug spray. Even though the cabana has an owner, it's through Dolphin Realty that you'll be paying your fee and signing your lease agreement. I did this all by email with them. They responded within a business day or so of any inquiry I made. It was all so easy and reasonably priced that we'll consider coming back to Hatteras Cabanas for future trips here!
