Wasn't the easiest place to find but once you get there and you're inside, it's all smiles as the staff greet you and are very welcoming. However, not sure if it really is suited for big groups, as it's tight and cramped, not roomy at all. As you would expect from a BBQ, there is an assortment of meat and it was all good quality. The highlights were the marinated pork ribs and cow tongue. Sashimi is also available and it was really fresh but quantities were quite small. There were also salads and sides but all pretty standard stuff. For dessert we had some ice cream which comes with three flavours, pretty decent. But there was this other dessert which was horrible. Pretty much was just shaved ice and syrup. It was very bland and sort of like a really bad slushie. Throughout the night service was consistently good, staff were very attentive and food came out quickly.

I went absolutely nuts here. Little did Suminoya know that my friends and I (all girls) were coming and we loved to eat. This is an all you can eat Japanese do-it-yourself BBQ joint tucked away in an alley near Priceline and major landmark, ANZ head office on Pitt St. For $41-49 you can order anything on the plastic menu and as many times as you like (unless indicated otherwise). My favourites were the beef tongue, shabu shabu pork, salmon sashimi and the eel with teriyaki sauce. If you love meat and Japanese food, fuse the two together and visit Suminoya. Loved my experience here! Important note, as with all Korean and Japanese BBQ places, make sure you don't wear your finest as you will definitely come out smelling like BBQ and the smell won't leave your clothes in the first wash. Especially when you come to this place because the ventilation isn't very good and trust me, you'll be BBQ-ing for a while. Enjoy! :)

I've dined here numerous times over the past decade and normally it's for a celebration with a group of friends. If you like meat and charcoal bbq then this is the place to go! This style is slightly different to Korean BBQ and the marinates are no where near as heavy or sweet. Don't forget that you're paying good money to dine here so the quality of meat (especially the beef) is top notch. They also serve sashimi which is pretty good but I admit, I come here for the meats. You order off the menu and the servers bring it out to you and you have 90 minutes to eat and last orders are taken an hour after you start. There are numerous sides including salads, rice and soups. To finish there are a few dessert options and you can get as much as you want. I've seen someone polish off a dozen scoops of green tea ice cream on a previous visit. Tip : don't plan to go out in public after a meal here, you'll smell like bbq!

Dined here many times. Always great experience and most times ends in food coma. If you love meat and bbq, this is the place to be. Ingredients are fresh and tasty. The beef just melts in your mouth. Recently they have had an upgrade. Gone are the charcoal burners, replaced by gas units. Great news, no more waving down the staff to order, ordering has had a technology update with a tablet provided to the table for instant ordering of food and drink.

If you have made it this far, you have done well. This place can be a challenge to find.

Finding Korean BBQ in Sydney is amazingly easy and delicious (check out BBQ City review http://frid.co/nhWRmR ) but finding an awesome Japanese BBQ is almost impossible. Against those odds Suminoya stands up and delivers. There is nothing that quite compares to the sizzle of fat, dripping down onto red hot charcoal embers, and then lightly dipped in a Japanese BBQ sauce. Taste the crispy fat and the juicy meat as you chew......*drools....* Something Suminoya do differently is that while they do have an al carte menu, they do a 90 min (60 min that you can actually order) all you can eat style buffet. While $50/pp for bbq is a bit rich, it is an awesome way to share a meal with 4-5 people.

If you love to bbq, this is the place to dine! Slightly different from Korean BBQ, you are only given a small stove but since it uses charcoal, food tastes better. It's not exactly cheap ($55 for premium per person) but the quality of the meat is really good. It does not have fancy marinate like the korean bbq but the quality of meat makes up for it. Menu is quite extensive with a wide variety of meat / side dishes/ hot food / sashmi. Some of my favourites include the black sesame ice cream / garlic prawns/ waygu beef sirloin and mushrooms! Note: Make sure you make a reservation in advance.

If you're seeking arguably best Japanese bbq restaurant in Sydney, you'll find it here. Charcoal bbq really makes a difference when done right and this restaurant knows how to do it right. They even have the whole setup done proper, with the ventilation so you don't get too smothered in bbq-ing smoke. We approached this joint from the Pitt St side, so it felt quite hidden for us. They have a back entrance but I think that's for airing out the smoke. Make a reservation, it gets busy here. We were seated quickly and given menus straight away. The staff were very straightforward about the meat ordering rules. Yes there are rules. Rules about leftover meat, I won't detail them here but you'll find out when you arrive. You can tell immediately the high quality of the meat by how it's listed on the menu, that and the prices. You are paying for high quality meat here so let's not be too shocked. I'm ever a lover of Japanese/Korean style bbq meat so I expect quality. They don't just serve bbq meat to bbq but some entrees like sashimi, don't put that on the grill. I know it sounds silly but the knobs sitting next to us did exactly that. This restaurant looks great for bringing groups, you need all the extra mouths you can get to help finish the food. But the main rule is, order what you know you can eat, don't overboard else you will find yourself wondering how you're going to stuff the last bit of delicious meat down. I'd return here again next time I'm in the neighbourhood, for sure.

    Cow tongue. So good!!!

So there's two options when you go here. Regular or premium sets. The premium includes stuff like sashimi, some bunch of ice creams and cow tongue. The regular you only can order cow tongue once per person. $50 vs $60. Since I mostly eat cow tongue I got the premium. Very cool place. You order off a tableside iPad and the meats and food come out very very quickly. The food was great, but the sashimi was forgettable. The one thing that kept me from giving this place 5 stars was that you get charged $2 for the mesh grill. And if you want to get a grill change its an additional $2 per grill change. Just never seen that before, kind of odd. Other then that the service was good and food was great. Just a little pricey but worth it if you eat enough.

    BBQ!

With relatively few staff that have to multitask between assembling, serving and taking orders, the queue rapidly lengthened behind us as dinner hours began. We ordered the karage bowl, plain wagyu bowl, the teriyaki chicken salad, assortment of side dishes and the matcha milk. The fried chicken is lightly battered and has a strong soy sauce flavor, topped with a layer of mayo. While the slightly undersized pieces have just came out from the fryer, the exterior barely have any crisp and is quite oily, while the interior is a little overcooked. The beef, different from its thick and succulent appearance on the menu, is overcooked and stringy. However, the flavoring on point and the topped spring onions are cut perfectly. Nothing special about the salad, and the same for the self-served takoyaki-on-a-skewer and cold tofu with sliced spring onions. The self-serve matcha milk was a pleasant surprise, with the right level of sugar and bitterness, only lacking some creaminess.
