Overall, an acceptable experience from a fast-food chain joint. The shop is located at the entrance of the mall, with a single service line and open kitchen. With relatively few staff that have to multitask between assembling, serving and taking orders, the queue rapidly lengthened behind us as dinner hours began. We ordered the karage bowl, plain wagyu bowl, the teriyaki chicken salad, assortment of side dishes and the matcha milk. The fried chicken is lightly battered and has a strong soy sauce flavor, topped with a layer of mayo. While the slightly undersized pieces have just came out from the fryer, the exterior barely have any crisp and is quite oily, while the interior is a little overcooked. The beef, different from its thick and succulent appearance on the menu, is overcooked and stringy. However, the flavoring on point and the topped spring onions are cut perfectly. Nothing special about the salad, and the same for the self-served takoyaki-on-a-skewer and cold tofu with sliced spring onions. With so many options here and nearby, I was feeling overwhelmed and just picked this place as it was the closest spot to the entrance I came In on. (There are two entrances, so it's also a nice shortcut between Kent and George st.) Oiden has like two dozen rice bowl options. I think they all come in regular and large sizes. I asked the cashier for her favorite and she recommended the teriyaki chicken. This sounded so plain to me, so I decided to get the garlic butter teriyaki chicken. While it was tasty, I did wish I had gone with the regular. The garlic butter was very flavorful, but so potent that I got zero teriyaki flavor. I also wish I had taken the time to figure out the condiments, so I could have put some soy sauce or hot sauce on it. The bowl came simply with rice, chicken, and some cabbage. Everything came out super quick, and it was very easy to order. The cashier was very nice as well. The fried options right before the cashier were like the packets of candy before you cash out at the market. Delicious, but not very cost effective. Located on George Street near the cinemas, I came here before I was meeting some friends for drinks. I would nearly always go to Menya Mappen next door as I love eating their udon but this time round I tried something different. Like next door, it is self service so order at the counter and make sure you pick up a black tray to collect your food on. Pick up any drinks you want before ordering your food as well. You can then select from their hot food station to add any extras if a bit more ravenous. Service is polite and efficient. I went with Ontama Teriyaki Chicken Bowl, and Curry Croquette. You can choose between having a regular and large bowl as well. The chicken was tasty and had a nice flavour to it. Rice was well seasoned with the sauce. A tray with a bowl of rice topped with chopped shallots and tempura flakes, miso soup with noodles, coleslaw with sharp Japanese dressing, and a little plate of a mystery something that was as tasty as it was unknowable. Slather chilli dust and soy on to taste and walk away stuffed with a pocket full of money you've saved. The rest of the menu looks epic, but really, the set meal is the dog's bollocks. These are one of our dinner spots because the food is great and its amazingly cheap (for Sydney). You can get a medium size bowl of curry, teriyaki chicken or other yummy Japanese dishes for about $6! There's usually a queue out the door but it goes pretty fast. The teriyaki chicken is super tasty, great sauce. Recently tried to vegetarian bowl which included kimchi, soy mince, spinach and a few other yummy veggies. I added the soft cooked egg on the top and I must say the egg makes all the difference. They also have complimentary tempura flakes and green onions that you can add as toppings. Menya Mappen is more of a noodle bar but Menya Oiden is a rice bar. so they give you a bowl of rice and then you can add toppings of your choice and the Kushiage ( which are the sides). The top selling point is the Kushiage - it's all bite sized pieces of vegetables, meat and seafood , all skewered, dipped in a batter and deep fried to get an amazing result. This place actually has a process which works really well . They have even explained it step by step at the restaurant. So you join the queue, the person serving you will give you a bowl and serve out the dish of your choice . Rice with whichever curry you choose - the sukiyaji beef and the chicken yakitori are quite popular. And then you make your way forward to all the amazing sides of Kushiage - which offers deep fried prawns, chicken ,asparagus, eggplant etc. none of these go above $2.80 in price. And then you proceed to the all the things kept in the refrigerator like potato salad, fermented soy beans and some desserts. The last step is to the counter and they tell you the amount to be paid as per your tray. They also offer you a cup of water. I mean what a system they have, its quick, its fast and it's cheap and efficient. For a meagre 20 $ two of us ate so much food that we were ready literally just go off to sleep in the car. And if it's your first time here, I suggest to give way for others while you check out their menu before getting in line because there are a lot of regulars and they're in and out of this place. For any newbie, you really can't go wrong with any of their bowls because they're all very delicious and will satisfy you. I went with a few friends and we got to have a little tasting of what others had sush as the chicken and beef bowls, takoyaki and the deep fried pork, all were GREAT! The freshness and flavors were all so good. The place itself just has a great smell once you enter and you see them prepare your food in front of you. Besides ordering your meal, there are other a la carte items where you can just pick up and you pay at the end and find yourself a seat. The salmon was a tasty flavouring for the rice (remember these are rice bowls, not protein on a bed of rice) and the egg and seaweed add that delectable yumminess that only cholesterol and umami can. I was visiting sydney for a couple weeks and loved hangin' out in chinatown. There is a great amount of food and at great prices. I also stayed near this place on George street. I was curious after seeing 3 small cafes indoors and packed. I found this place a little more approachable than the one next door - both equally crowded. I had several meals here -- and for any first timers, when you enter the line there is a large menu both before you and after you enter the storefront. It is full of pictures and clear, simple descriptions. I prefer hot soups, but they have cold; and, they offer udon and soba for most if not all options. I mostly enjoyed soba, because udon is more common option at other places I have visited. I loved both their soba and udon noodles, even though they aren't made in house - i assume - since you can see them pulling them out of packages. If you go to their site they also offer a great, fun page on how to order and the rest of the process. Simply choose your main dish and size and you like add a soft boiled egg, then your next step is an awesome array of tempura -- rice cake/shrimp/chicken/asparagus/sweet potato/etc... - then there are some small toppings in closed containers - chives/poached chicken/etc... - next you have the option for tempura dipping sauce, chives and bonito...You pay in cash then as you leave grab your spoon/stix and also self serve water, napkins, etc... I truly enjoyed the noodles compared to a lot of other places because they don't over cook them, plus the broth is delicious and if you want spicy pork and spicy broth it is a good sweat or mild for those who enjoy extra spicy food. If you get the egg on top, it is a popular option, it blends in nicely with the broth. All in all, a great meal despite the cheap prices - I would pay more.
