She too was very pleasant and helpful, especially upstairs when I was trying to decide on my orders. So the negatives: I was a bit disappointed by the Iced Hojicha Latte and the Hojicha Tiramisu. Both didn't have that roasted earthy flavor that goes hand in hand with Hojicha. The texture of the tiramisu was fine though. It was served in a cute little wooden box. The positives: The food in the restaurant downstairs was reasonably priced. But I'm not sure if that's just because I'm doing the conversion to USD from Australian Dollars? Pretty decent sized portions for the prices. As for flavors I can't complain. My roll was good. My pork gyoza was nice and crisp with a good sauce. But the star was the MB4 Australian Wagyu steak. Perfectly marbled, flavorful and tender. The cafe drags down the overall rating but not enough to drop them down to a 3 because I enjoyed my dinner that much.

We ordered a sashimi selection, pork belly skewers, slow cooked scallops and, tempura prawns with truffle salt. The food here is amazing. The fish was super fresh and tasty. The tempura prawns were divine and I loved the scallops. The flavours were very authentic and clean just like good places in Japan. I would happily come back here any day for a feed and some sake. This looked like a generic Japanese place, like the ones you find in English speaking countries. Yelp and other apps seem to recommend it, and I walked in suspiciously. Turns out, it was great! They advertised wagyu beef grilled on pink Himalayan salt, and that was what we got. It turned out to be a thick slab of salt on a gas stove, where you could grill the wagyu and veggies on the salt itself. Since the salt provides the flavour, you don't have to add extra seasoning to the food grilled on it - it made everything taste delicious. The beef was also of good quality and had fabulous marbling. We also got agedashi tofu and some grilled salmon. The tofu were so-so, but the salmon was so delicious and presented very nicely with vegetables. Service was so-so, but the prices were great since the US dollar was strong (woohoo), and I think that was the cheapest quality wagyu I've had in a restaurant. I still haven't seen places in the US that does the salt grill thing. I wish I could go back and have this again!

Sashimi was superbly fresh. All in all quality of ingredients are amazingly fresh. Portion runs big so be careful not to over order. The price runs on the more expensive side but it did reflect the quality and taste so I didn't feel like I was ripped off. But then again I wasn't the one paying. I don't think I'll rush back with that kind of price but if you don't have to worry about the moolah the it's a great Japanese place to go.

For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

It was tasty but I found the portion was really small. I was still hungry afterwards. On my second visit I tried their Bibimbap. The portion was much better but I was disappointed with the egg. Bibimbap that I know would have a raw egg yolk which would be placed at the top centre of the dish. Instead there was a fried egg sitting on top of my Bibimbap. On my third visit I sat down at their Sushi Train section. There weren't that many options presented to me on that train, and all of them were slathered with a lot of either sauce or Mayo. I ended up choosing only about 4 plates as I didn't want anything else on there. And they were quite pricey too. The service was quick and the staff was helpful. Most of their food were tasty. Great option for work lunch if you happen to work in the city.
