It was Thursday evening after going to the pool, starting a 3-day weekend, and I was in the mood for a hookah pipe and mint tea, so I started looking on Google hookah places in Edmonton and came upon Sultan. Sultan is a very relaxing place!! Middle eastern music is playing, lights are dim, and the air is filled with hookah smoke scent. Sultan offers a good variety of foods, salads, hummus and shawarmas. I took the hummus plate accompanied by warmed up pita bread - it was very delicious!!! I also drank mint tea, which was good and warming. Turkish coffee is also served, along with non-alcoholic drinks (smoothies and soft drinks), alcoholic beverages (beer, whine, shots). Finally, they have of course hookah pipes, with a long list of flavours to choose from. I decided to go with double apple flavour, but they have many other fruit and/or mint flavours. A few extra charcoal pucks are added, so you can take your time to smoke, drink and eat, while listening to music!! I look forward to coming back to try their other foods. read more

I worked here and it was the worst job of of my life. I had no training and no help. The owner is arrogant and would rather sit there and smoke shisha than make sure his employees have an understanding of their job. I had a lot of complaints about the food and the service but i could only do so much with the non existent training i was given. On top of it all they never gave me a paycheck. P.S. there is no air conditioning and they make you pay $3 for water. I was not allowed to give people glasses of water... ridiculous read more

The Sultan Palace Cafe is a great place to go with friends, hang out and just relax. The place itself is pretty simple that has plenty of seating but can get really busy on the weekends. The have good food and offer Shisha as well with many different flavors. That is the main attraction. They often have some live musical acts playing but I could do without those. Sometimes it gets too loud and takes away from the relaxing atmosphere. If you haven't been here before you should check it out. Plan to go with some friends for an evening where you don't have anything else planned. You won't be disappointed. read more

It was a cold and rainy day in October when Heath and I found ourselves driving around downtown looking for a place to eat. We both reminisced about our time in the Syrian desert about this time last year we sat in the car and thanked the auto-Gods for heated seats. Our conversation went from the heat we wish we had, to the Palmyran ruins, to the Bedouin food, to "Oh hey! That place has Shisha in the window!" and so we decided to wander into The Sultan Palace. The Palace is located across from Save On Foods in the bottom of a very large condo/apartment complex. The restaurant is simply decorated with pictures of Lebanon on the walls and fake vines with grapes hanging from the ceilings. The menu is small but well priced and offers a good sampling of Middle Eastern Cuisine. Heath and I decided on a pot of tea (about 6$), Dolma (about 6$) and a chicken panini for him (about 7$) and a beef shwarma for me (about $7). The Dolma arrived quickly. There was four on the plate and we quickly devoured them. They were delicious with hints of lemon and dill. The shwarma and panini arrived quickly afterwards wrapped in foil. The shwarma was perfect! The tenderloin was cooked to perfection, the tahini was not overpowering and the bread was fresh. I had a bite of Heath's chicken panini which was also nicely done and complimented with a strong garlic sauce. As we ate we enjoyed the pictures of Lebanon up everywhere and the lack of English around us. It was like being transported back to little restaurants we loved in the Middle East. We finished our food feeling comfortable and not too full. We decided no shisha for us today as we didn't have the time to properly enjoy it, although had we gone for some, they had a wide range of flavors for 12$ and 7$ refills. Love this place, next time you're here, see if you can spot me as I frequent often. So I agree with some of the other reviews, and this place has been both fantastic and crappy in the same breath. What started off as a hip happening place has changed over the years. It used to be a moroccan styled cafe with food, drinking, and dancing. A place where me and friends would hang out and play cards. Slowly the place was falling apart.... but that was all before 2014 hit. In 2014, the owner shut down the restaurant and renovated. And A much needed renovation it was. New Decor, new equipment for the food, new hooka's, hell the works. Its now better than its ever been. The portion sizes, and the quality of the food has gone up, and the hooka's/Shisha is better than its ever been. They are still having staffing issues, but are looking to hire for the summer months, so expect service to be a little slow till things are fully settled as the renovations were just completed. All in all, if you're looking for a chill place to do work, study, or relax with friends I would recommend this place. read more

I went for dinner here on Sunday night. I had the beef shawarma and my friend had the chicken shawarma. Both of our meals were really great. The rice was plentiful and tasty, and the meat was really great. The portion was huge and fair for $18. We had good service, and the place was very quiet. The only negative is that we asked for water and each got a bottle of water. It was a solid experience and I will return! Also, as others have noted, it is now called Sultan. read more

Is it possible to give less than one star? I guess not. Please don't be shy to visit this establishment if you are looking to be ignored. I went with 5 friends, and was virtually completely ignored. We received one 2 hookahs, our hummus never came to the table, it took them 25 minutes to make our Turkish coffee. The owner was too busy flirting with some teenage girls, or maybe it was because we were white... Regardless, the restaurant was empty, and the staff didn't care to serve us. I will never go back. From what I saw at one of the tables that was occupied, it looked as if management ran over to Save-On-Foods and picked up some hummus and threw it in a plate and served it. This place is horrendous. This place is awful. Food overpriced, portions small, food bland and flavourless and made without passion. Next, while there is one friendly server, it's mostly very dismissive and sparse. Get ready to wait if you want to order more coals. Better to get up and try find someone, if even possible. Thirdly, they LOOOOOOVE to over-charge you. They don't produce itemized receipts, and this is because they often add an imaginary "cover charge" onto the bill, while double-billing for other items and hoping you won't notice. It's actually borderline criminal. (PS, try not tipping, they'll FREAK OUT as if they earned it in the first place with crappy service and crappy food). Avoid this place AT ALL COSTS. It needs to be shut down and the owners should be ashamed of themselves. read more

This was my first visit to Sultan's, but having enjoyed other shisha restaurants, I was looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately I can't review the food we planned on getting, as we rushed through our hookah and decided not to order anything else with our drinks due to the shockingly appalling service. The blonde server was so incredibly rude and flippant that we had no desire to stay past a single drink. Questions were met with sarcasm and disdain. Not worth staying, and most definitely will it go back. My friends and I will be sticking to other shisha restaurants. read more

Not the greatest place to enjoy a shisha. The service is sub-par, staff is impersonal, shisha is often poorly packed. The average customer here is of the high school kid variety, not that that's a bad thing, I just get tired of seeing pompous kids in flat brim baseball caps. I went here the other day for dinner and had horrible service. The waiters barely came around, messed up our order and seemed more concerned about chatting with their friends. When paying the bill, I was asked about the service and was open and honest about how I thought they should have came around more and was surprised when the waiter seemed puzzled and started to argue with me. I told him I had received a bad experience and that they gave us the wrong food order, but that I would be back as I have frequented this place several times. A few days later, I went back and was confronted on the spot by a different server. He berated me and told me they were around every five minutes and that it was my fault for not calling them over. I hadn't even sat for one minute and he spent several minutes yelling at me. I felt verbally attacked, embarrassed and bullied and immediately left. I will never go back to this place again. This place has its ups and downs. It is a good place if you want to chill there, smoke hookah and take your time. But if you're in a rush, don't even both. The place is packed with high school kids, the service is super slow. We had to wait 30mins once just to get water. That too, it was bottled water. The food is alright. I was looking around for a late-night meal and came across this place. The music was loud but I managed to clearly communicate my order of the shish taouk plate which already looked expensive at $15. After waiting for twenty minutes, I received an average-sized plate with rice, chicken, turnips and a few McCain frozen french fries. As I was eating, the owner came along and gave me about three pitas and a bowl of tahini. He did not ask me if I wanted this and the music was too loud to ask if it was extra. Still, I didn't expect that it would be too expensive anyway... However, at the end of my meal, which came when the music stopped abrubtly and people were being ushered out because it was closing time, my bill came out to almost $30! DOUBLE what I expected to pay. The pita and (very bland) tahini dip alone apparently added up to the price of my chicken plate! I tried to dispute the bill but I was being forced out and the owner refused to reason. This was one of the worst dining experiences of my life. If you're hungry and it's late, go to the Denny's around the block. For this disgraceful rathole to call itself 'mediterranean' is an unforgivable insult to the mediterranean people and their culture and cuisine. read more

We phoned on New Years Eve and asked if they had any room for us to come for supper there. Surprisingly, they said they did, so we got dressed up and drove across the city. When we arrived, they turned us away rudely and without apology, stating that there was a private function happening. It ruined our evening. Also, I ate there once after that because some friends wanted to go. All the staff sat around smoking hookah and visiting and we were not looked after. This is a nice place to come to with friends. On the inside, The Sultan Place is neither glamorous nor fancy - the decor is very simple with lots of plain tables and chairs. I was here on the weekend, and the place was extremely busy. We were lucky to get a table before they were all occupied. My company and I haven't tries the food here, so I can't comment on it; but from what I have seen waiters deliver to the neighbouring tables, portion sizes are generous, and the food looks fresh and colourful. Turkish coffee and hookah are what my friends and I came to Sultan Place for. On the menu there are about 6 flavours of shisha to choose from; and after trying green apple and mint flavours I can recommend both. Coffee here is exceptionally good and strong; it is also quite pricey. Sultan Place get very noisy because firstly, it is often densely packed, and secondly, because there are frequent live performances going on. On the day my friends and I came here, we witnessed live performance from a man who played keyboards and sang Lebanese songs very loudly. It helped create and authentic atmosphere but completely killed all conversations people in the restaurant were having. It was simply too loud! If I am not mistaken, Friday is the day when you can witness a performance by belly dancers. read more
