Well, my friend who brought us here said we ought to split one plate among two people. He was right (though with Sultan as far from Seattle as it is, I'm glad I got my own so I could eat leftovers later). We ordered some kind of apple upside-down muffin thing that was like a cinnabon gone horribly awry in all the right ways. Not too sweet, very cinnamoned, and absolutely delicious. GET ONE. We had a roast beef prime rib, club sandwich, ranch chicken sandwich, and chicken fried steak. Firstly, the mashed potatoes come with four choices of gravy types. And the potatoes are real mashers! Winning already! The bread on many sandwich/burger options is made in house, and is awesome. Sadly, they won't sell it to you. They make it just for their restaurant. Every dish was perfect, huge, and absolutely delicious. SO MANY WINS. I am so glad I don't live close to Sultan Bakery. I would end up being such a fatty. Breakfast on the road - particularly if it's for business - is never, EVER, anything to write home about - unless it's in Japan. So imagine how surprised I was to find the best - and I mean THE BEST - breakfast I have ever had in my entire life in Sultan of all places; it's the Riverside of Seattle damnit! Positioned maybe a quarter mile down from the local reptile house and koi supply, this tiny bakery has no signs claiming the "world's best breakfast!" - just the one that simply states "BAKERY." My friends who travelled here last year stopped in out of curiosity and made it a mission to visit it again this time, not once but twice. I gotta say, it's so freaking worth it. Locally supported, it generates a healthy flow of customers. The display case is filled with all of their own baked goods, which are the same you'd find at your local grocer, except these seem to been injected with steroids - ultra fuerte. But you want a real breakfast, right? The first day I sampled a heart clogging ham (you can also opt for bacon or sausage) sandwich that's crafted from "Texas Sized" slices of bread (I think that's how they were referring to it?), which looked totally intimdating but are amazingly light and easy to take down, that include a couple eggs and a slice of American cheese. My second taste of Sultan was the corned beef and hash, which was better than any of the Hormel canned goodness I've typically eaten throughout my lifetime. Here, there are succulent pieces of corned beef with tiny chunks of potato mixed in with a taste you know that these people have perfected through years of experience - or they've done a fine job of making the Hormel taste that much better. Sides include the jumbo toast and homemade jam which was really good as well. I may never find myself in Sultan very often or ever again. But if the plan calls for Seattle, I'd gladly go out of my way to experience this culinary treat again. It's so tasty and most of the items on their menu/display case don't go above the $10 mark. Swooping down the slopes on Stevens Pass, 6 hours boarding and being pelted by icy rain, trudging back into a car to drive 2 hours home to Seattle and then a heavenly sign beckons. All lit-up and boasting "BURGERS. ROAST CHICKEN. ROAST PORK. STEAK." And by golly, did they deliver. Sultan Bakery is located off the side of the road in 'blink & you miss it' Sultan. The name is deceiving though since they're so much more than just a bakery. It's a throwback to a by-gone era where it has a genuine diner feel without all the fake jukeboxes (I'm talking to you Johnny Rockets.) Their menu is down-home, stick to your ribs kinda grub: platters of spaghetti & meatballs, gigantic sandwiches, steak, mashed potatoes and stuffing. Portions are humongous and hearty. Nothing that would be featured on the Food Network by any means but perfect after a day in the snow. But let me tell you about a dessert that deserves a category of its own. The peanut-butter chocolate bar. Overheard it's one of their best-selling items and me oh my. 4-6 layers of who knows what, topped with caramelized peanuts ... there was chocolate and peanut butter scrambling on top of each other. I've stopped by Sultan Bakery on my way up to Stevens Pass for a day of snowboarding twice now. Both times I left disappointed and somewhat disgusted at what I just ate. The first time I tried a vegetable omelet. The omelet itself was huge and with hash-browns and toast. It was a completely gigantic portion. The vegetables weren't very delicious, rather bland in taste, and the food was pretty butter/greasy whatever. I ate it and was left not amazed, nor disappointed, at least I was going snowboarding to burn off all these calories I just consumed. The second time I went things went downhill. I ordered the smoked salmon omelet hoping for an even better experience than last time. This time was much worse though. The salmon was disgusting.. I really mean bad. I don't think I've ever had bad salmon (how does that exist), but this was non-palatable. I tried over and over to convince myself it was just one piece, but I was wrong. The whole omelet let me down, especially the salmon. I mean c'mon this is the pacific northwest we have the best salmon in the world - plus this place is right on the Skykomish, which is full of salmon!! There is even a hatchery up the damn road, go get some good delicious salmon if your right there! Bleh I left disappointed and pretty disheartened by the whole experience. That said I have a few more problems I'll point out. First and foremost why is there only white bread? When anyone goes to a bakery they expect many choices of bread especially other than the least healthy kind! I don't want white bread, in my opinion every other kind of bread is better than white bread. At least have some whole wheat or something non-bleached please. Next the coffee - I love going to bakery's and getting quality local coffee, but what do they have here.. Starbucks. And of course they have the bad tasting and watered down version of starbucks.. mmmm so refreshing (not). I'd rather go to the gas station and get my coffee than this stuff. All being said and done I really was hoping for a great experience at Sultan Bakery. I don't know if all the other people who eat here are in a daze from snowboarding and just scarf down their food without tasting it or if they all just got really high before they came here. Either way it doesn't deserve the amount of stars it has. I've heard great things about this place and probably had too high of expectations, but when something can't even be eaten (especially salmon) something is wrong. If I return I think I'll just stick to donuts, which are always my last option. My recommendations are to get more bread choices (at least healthier!), buy better locally roasted coffee, and get organic actually flavorful vegetables. read more

Greasy Spoons Are Better Than This Dump! We have gone to the Sultan Bakery for meals for absolutely the LAST time. The food was solid grease and the bacon was not even close to crispy. They don't know the difference between over easy and medium for eggs and the hash browns are like petrified cardboard. We had been going here for over 20 years, but the food has gone completely down hill. The bakery aspect is still good though. Additionally, I have to wonder when the last time the health department and fire department inspected the facility. This place is AWFUL! Here's why: The food is cheap. By cheap, i mean inexpensive. The portions are HUGE. One plate can easily feed two. The food is so damn tasty, one plate just isn't enough. You find yourself wanting to eat your food, your friends food, your fellow diners food... because you know what YOU have is delicious, and theirs just LOOKS so damn good. Ingredients that enter the Sultan Bakery turn into gold. I don't know how else to describe it. The bakery itself is interesting... it's pretty sad on the inside yet clean. They don't even have a menu, they have whatever they are serving that day on individual dry erase boards that line the shelves behind the front counter and sometimes a few will be propped up above the bakery case. Their bathroom - you have to go outside, around the back of the building and then in the back door through the kitchen. Let none of this steer you away.. I'm just preparing you to not have high expectations on the bakery itself. Yet anything you order will blow your mind, have you coming back for more and recommending to all of your friends. I could never even start to recommend what to eat as we've tried so many things and never been disappointed. From homecooked meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) to buttermilk bars from heaven to the most amazing desserts (peanutbutter pie for the win!!!!!!)... you just can't go wrong. Not only are you missing out on delicious tastey food, but you are missing out on the best baked goods in Washington state! This small town Mom and Pop style bakery doesn't seem like much, but it is like a sanctuary for travelers. This bakery not only provides your standard donuts, muffins, and cakes but they also have a wide menu or Pastas, Sandwiches, and amazing soups. I used to be a local to Sultan long ago, and made frequent visits! Even now living in Kirkland I still make a trip out there once in awhile just for the food. I can say with confidence there is no better bakery in Washington like the Sultan Bakery. Their special bread which you can only get when you order a sandwich and their baked deserts are fantastic! Their bread slices are an inch thick and just amazing! Especially with their turkey special smoothered in gravy. The portions are always huge. I always end up with left overs and always buy more to take home when I am finished. The cost is painfully cheap especially for the quality of food you get. Like I said, if you pass this place and don't stop... You are missing out and denying your taste buds an amazing trip to the old country. Ordered a cheeseburger and fries for myself and my nine year old. It took so long the burger and fries were cold. The lettuce and tomato were missing from the plate. I heard other people complaining about the same issue. The waitstaff was so overwhelmed that it would have been dinner time before it was fixed so we just left without finishing. First burger I've ever walked out on. My son summed it up best when he commented; "Dad, the cheeseburger they cooked in the microwave on the train was better than that. Anytime anyone asks me to go hiking, I get little excited inside, not because of the much needed exercise or the majestic beauty that I may witness but because I know I will be stopping by Sultan Bakery. This place has the ingredients to bring joy to the chubster inside of me: delicious food, wide array of baked treats, and all of it in ginormous portions! The cinnamon buns are the size of my face and my face is huge! Literally. I wear a 7 5/8 hat. Whoa. On my latest visit, they happened to add a new food item on the menu, FIsh Sandwich! I love fish. And, althought the description wasn't all that exhilirating, I thought I'd give it a whirl, and GRAPPLEBERRIES, it was delicious! I've been to many joints that claim to have the best fish 'n chips or fish sammies, but honest to goodness, this fish sandwich was ridiculously good! Comes with a side of fries and you're only charging me $7 for it?! We're going hiking every week! Few notes: Come early. Try hiking around 9am so you can get to the place around noon because it'll start getting busy and they'll run out baked goods and food. Also, don't expect spectacular service because people come for the food, not to make lifelong friends. By the way, also ate a choco chip cookie and a lemon cake. Are we allowed to swear on Yelp? Oh, right, forgot. One minus star for a lackluster burger. They don't ask how you like your burger, so all your well-doners will enjoy the leathery meat, but as for us, it was just alright. Delicious! Generous portions ... well worth the price. It gets pretty crowded at times thus the service can be slow, but rest assure, you will go home satisfied. Somethings are simply WORTH the wait. I've eaten here a few times over the years when up this way fishing; however, I recently moved to the area. I've not been here enough times to really know the quality of service with any consistency, but on my first visit (since moving to the area) I did find the server (at the counter) to be rude. Not so much as a "hello" ... I felt like giving the obviously unhappy gal a hug ... or something. An older and FAR more friendly lady was working this time. She was a PLEASURE to do business with. This place is actually on Hwy 2 in the heart of Sultan. We lived in Gold Bar ( about 8 miles east) for 6 years so this was a place we frequented quite often. It is super busy here especially on the weekends as well as ski season for people traveling to Stevens Pass on Hwy 2. Donuts & cinnamon rolls here are the bomb as is the coffee! They have specials, breakfast, lunch and they serve until 8 PM some days so an early dinner is in order also. The smoked salmon chowder is really good and so is the chili. They make both here from scratch. Breakfast is hit or miss sometimes but the omelets are good and they even have an old fashioned French Dip Sandwich for lunch! Not a whole lot of vegetarian choices here. The sandwiches are huge and they make them on their homemade bread which is good. Our faves are the cinnamon rolls and the apple fritter cups !! I feel a sugar coma coming on!! It isn't gourmet but it fits in with the area and the outside patio is really nice in the warmer weather. I've stopped at Sultan bakery twice on the way to and from Stevens Pass. This place is always busy, but their pastries and breakfast (MASSIVE!!) items are simply amazing. Perfect for before/after skiing/snowboarding! I love their apple cup (cinnamon bread + tiny apple chunks + gooey center) and strawberry bearclaw! Walk in, pick what you want from the many white boards (which serve as menu items), order and pay, then take a seat and wait a few minutes for your food to be served. Visited this place for the first time about a month ago. Husband and I both ordered the ham and egg breakfast sandwich. We had no idea how gigantic they were. We could have shared one and still been very full. I wish the cashier would have said something but she was too busy having a snooty attitude to give a crap about how big their portions are. If I'm travelling up US-2, I'm stopping at the bakery. And, as has been mentioned, I'm calling ahead as I'm coming through Monroe. I've only been in for breakfast so far, and my choices have been limited to the breakfast sandwiches, the giant (GIANT) breakfast burrito, and a couple of doughnuts. The breakfast sandwiches are made with egg, choice of cheese (American or Swiss), choice of meat (bacon, sausage, or ham), and the most impossible bread you've ever eaten. This stuff is somehow thick and dense, yet also soft and fluffy. I still can't figure out how they slice this stuff without smashing it. These things won't leave you hungry, might not even leave you AND a friend hungry if you split it. They don't skimp on the egg or meat. Also have a choice of adding mustard or mayo. On my most recent trip I ordered the giant breakfast burrito. This monster comes with 2 extra large eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, hashbrowns, veggies, and cheese all wrapped in a tortilla. With sides of sour cream and salsa, of course. I almost dropped it when she handed to me; I wasn't expecting 40 lbs of food. This was enough for breakfast for both me and the girlfriend AND breakfast for me the next morning. They also have coffee (Starbucks and something else) at the end of the counter and an espresso machine. My only disappointment to date has been the hot chocolate. They take the same approach to this as they do the food - more, more, more. There was way too much chocolate (I know, too much chocolate in hot chocolate? But really, it was a lot) and sugar, it was like sucking down a bottle of Hersey's and sugar cubes. read more

A few friends had recommended this bakery so I was curious to try it. It was busy on that Sunday with diners and a few more people waiting for their to-go orders. I purchased two of each item - apple fritter, eclair, cream puff, peanut butter caramel bar and brownie. All of these were just okay. Too much dough and not enough filling or topping. I had high expectations, but I did learn that they do not make their cakes and bars. They make the doughnuts and (according to my source) everything on the display case to the right of the cashier. Bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sammich.... I could eat one every morning for the rest of my life and be pretty darn happy. Probably some of the best bacon I've had in any local restaurant and they don't skimp on the portion. Their homemade white bread is amazing too! Don't forget to try a cinnamon cup doughnut thingy (baked and covered with glaze, not fried so you don't feel horrible after eating...... oh, three or four). The older lady working the counter is an absolute joy. The young folk can be a bit quiet but they're still kind. Yes, it can get busy and it can be slow but it's so worth the wait. Maple bars, doughnuts, extra large apple cups, cookies, cinnamon rolls...the bakery case at the Sultan Bakery would make a fat kid drool. JP can't resist a good bakery so we popped in here on our way skiing. He ordered the apple cup (shaped like a giant muffin and covered with sugary goo, the exterior was a bit stale but the inside was moist) and I went with a cake doughnut (yea, sweets aren't really my thing and it wasn't anything special...wish they had cinnamon cake doughnuts as they remind me of apple picking as a kid). We also ordered a turkey sammy to go...holy moly...that thing was HUGE! We could have easily split a half. All of the orders coming out of the kitchen were gigantic. The grilled sandwiches look like the way to go with their thick, crusty bread. Our bread was thick but making the rookie mistake and not getting it grilled made me have a sad face. Service was slow. We had to wait awhile just for our turky/cheese/lettuce/tomato/onion/mustard sandwich to be made (20+ minutes). Also, it's kind of weird to walk through the back to use the restroom, but the staff is super nice. If you are heading to/from Stevens in the winter or hiking in the spring/summer the Sultan Bakery will surely provide you with more than enough calories to make it through your adventure. read more

I'm getting a little tingly just thinking about this bakery. Whenever I go snowboarding, it's a little distracting knowing I'm going to stop here for food on the way home. I've actually never tried their "real food" menu, though it always looks good on other people's plates, because I consume as many calories as possible of their sweets/pastries. And I usually eat something there and buy more to bring home. I also take orders from my family members who aren't there but want me to bring something back. I think it's the best bakery I've been to, really very striking. And consistent - I have never had bad food here. If only I had more reason to be in Sultan! read more
