I believe that I have found a hidden gem! After being told that I had to have reservations at Colorado Bend State Park to camp overnight; we found our way to Sulphur Springs. Okay, there are many, many cats that are sleeping around the office area and yes, it doesn't smell the greatest, but you're only there for less than three minutes at the office signing in. NOT a big deal at all in my opinion. The lady that works there can be rude, but honestly, I don't think she realizes it. When we asked if they do anything for Active Duty Military; her reply was more of a snicker when she said no-- it was more like she couldn't believe that we had the audacity to ask! We shrugged it off, not a big deal. We wanted to do primitive camping for one night. The lady told us that it was $12 a night and we must check out by 9AM. We definitely did not want to wake early in the morning so the lady gave us a deal of $22 which is basically two nights. The old man the other yelpers are referring to isn't a bother. He will follow you with his little side by side to make sure you find a place and if you need guidance, he will help you. He may be hard to understand, but he was helpful to us. MUST HAVE 4X4! It is a must! There is a two miles stretch of primitive camping; you can literally put your tent anywhere you want by the river. The closet neighbor was 400 feet away! There are some campfires that you can use in some sections, but the further out, you may have to do some digging and build you own fire pit. Also the further you go out, the more open spaces there are and the scenery opens up beautifully, BUT you must have a 4X4 to get through!! There are sharp uphills with rocks, sections of the path in water, and winding down hills with branches that will scratch your vehicle, but it is so worth it. It's just a one way so cross your fingers that there won't be another car heading towards you. We also went exploring around. There is no swimming pool and we didn't come across any Sulfur Springs; however we did smell the sulfur in the air. There's also a worn out fish cleaning section. Pretty much just a laid back place to hang for a couple days without too many people bothering you. You can fish and hike around. We went hiking towards the primitive road and we went ways down and discovered a cave with two carcasses at the entrance! We immediately turned around and hiked back to camp, haha. Compost toilets probably never have been scrubbed clean so be sure to have your toilet paper, wet wipes, and your hand sanitizer with you. If you are a girl, might be better to bring a portable toilet for you. There's also a shower, but I didn't check it out. So if you're looking for more of a calm place to camp, this is it!

This review is for tent camping at Sulphur Springs Camp (www.bendtexas.com). While I had a decent overall experience at this campground on April 19th 2014, the following things are huge negatives for me and my family in regards to a camp ground: 1. Spring Fed "Pool" was completely empty and looked like it's glory days are LONG past. 2. Roads have not been graded in some time and much of the campground cannot be accessed by car (without significant undercarriage damage). We could not access many sites with a factory Mazda 3. 4. Shower/Bathroom facilities near the main office were not clean nor did they appear to have been cleaned in some time. Soap at the wash sinks and hand dryers (towels, paper or otherwise) were not available. Floors were very dirty in the showers and the general facility was very dirty. 5. Upon entry there were over 15 cats running around the main office/house. Not really my business but the smell walking through the front door was a little overwhelming. We raised our concerns regarding the shower facilities with the staff but were met with surprise at our concerns and excuses of why they weren't clean (lots of land for 2 people to take care of). While we understand the difficulty of maintaining grounds of this size, it is still a concern to us as guests. Overall, the value was great, it is located very close to Colorado Bend State Park (our destination) and if you don't mind the facilities, it works as a "place to sleep" in my opinion. We will not return to this site however unless some effort is given to improve the grounds.

The low water crossing at 9 that morning.

I recently visited this camp over memorial day weekend and although it was mostly enjoyable, there were 3 big issues that really changed my outlook on this place. 1. The directions on the website are WRONG! Idk why you'd continue misguiding people especially when you KNOW there's an issue. 2. The campground road it horrible! We were able to make it through with our cars however I would recommend a truck or other vehicle. Those giant potholes and roads are no joke. And last but SURELY NOT LEAST 3. When you visit this place, as well as the nearby state park, you must cross a low water crossing. Now I don't know how many people reading this will know, but Texas has received quite a bit of rain recently. Friday and Saturday were pretty enjoyable but by Saturday evening the rain poured down on us. Now I can't blame Sulphur Springs Camp for that but what I can blame them for is not notifying us like the state park did that at 8 that evening PEOPLE WERE BEING EVACUATED!! They checked on us a few times and not a word was said. We had no idea until yesterday, we were attempting to leave at 9 am and noticed the low water crossing was completely covered. Went to the state park who told us they had people evacuate the area at 8pm the previous night. The Park Rangers went above and beyond to help us and even let us stay there, which can I add that their camp ground was really nice and even had a nice toilet area and outdoor shower? Wish we would've known! Needless to say because of the choices Sulphur Springs made or should I say didn't make, we were stranded there for OVER 12 HOURS!! Adults, CHILDREN. So take it or leave it but I thought this really hurt the integrity of the place in my eyes. Maybe they just wanted our money? Idk but I will NEVER return again.

Diamond in the rough. So much to do, but so little time. Great spot for young, old and in between.

When the State Park was full, it was very easy to pay($12/night for 2) and pitch our tent here for the night. Pretty place. Clean bathroom.

There's a small river that crosses through the camp site, but the tides were low and it didn't look like you could kayak or tube in it that weekend. It was nice to watch the ducks swim by though. I like that the campsite includes clean restrooms and showers. Each tent site provides you a bench, trash bin, bbq grill, and fire pit. Unfortunately, there was a burn ban in effect during our stay, so we couldn't light a wood fire. There was plenty of space between us and other campers, so it didn't feel cramped. One thing that could be improved is that the field is pretty rocky. We couldn't seem to find a spot for our tent that wouldn't drive a stone in our backs at night. The camp site offers kayak rentals, but it gets to be quite expensive. Visitors can also use the swimming pool located by the front office. If you're feeling hungry, want to grab a drink, or enjoy some entertainment, right by the entrance is a restaurant bar. They've got live music most nights.

It's more of a camper site with a dry-ish field nearby. I feel that this site just had extra land so it offered some camping grounds but you're basically in people's backyards on both sides, and near a highway so lots of car noise. Maybe there are sites offered deeper where you're not so close to roads and peoples homes. Overall, I still enjoyed my trip, but I would probably only return here if I had an RV Camper. Not the best spot for tent camping.
