I wanted a place close to work for non-greasy food and stumbled across this place online. It's one of the few Japanese places in the area (the next closest is probably the little place on Commercial Street, or the expensive hotel one by tower hill).
I should start by saying I love Japanese food, and I think you have to accept that in London you won't get amazing sushi unless your are willing to fork out (or should that be chopstick out?) a few quid. What you can get is a decent approximation for a reasonable price (this place) or amazing 'almost in Kyoto' treats for many more pounds in Mayfair.
By booking online we got a crazy good offer, which was a free bottle of prosecco when we ordered dinner. This meant our dinner for two with drinks was only £50. Score!
We had 12 gyoza: chicken, duck and veg. Although the dipping sauce seemed a little 'bottled' the gyoza were nicely cooked, crunchy and not too greasy. The meat ones were much better than the veg, which were a bit thin on filling.
Then we had 6 prawn katsu fotomaki, 8 grilled eel maki and a selection of nigiri. I tend not to order sashimi unless I really know a place. I thought that the sushi was good for the price. The eel was my favourite. They used nice accompaniments inside the rolls so there was some extra texture and flavour there.
We also had some chicken noodles, which I'm going to say were not very exciting. Perfectly pleasant but they could do with more flavour. I wouldn't order them again.
The ladies serving us were super nice and helpful. I'll definitely go back here again when I'm peckish on a work night. I also notice that you can Deliveroo from here, so likely to become one of my go - to places for late night office dinners.
I agree with the other reviewer that the ambience is a bit stark. This place is still quite new and with the great manageress they have I'm sure it'll be a hot spot in no time. read more
