Callooh Callay is kind of a hole-in-the-wall but the inventive cocktails will have you chortling in your joy. I'd describe it as busy but not overcrowded, dim lit and divey but not dirty, with fair prices, interesting drink options and friendly service. And there was a live DJ starting around 10:30 PM. For drinks, I had the BBQ Negroni. I have no idea what gives it the "BBQ" flavor, but it's there and it is good. My wife ordered the Green Card, a tequila-based drink that features a mango chutney. (The Green Card is unfortunately cursed though with way too salty ancho mix on the rim). Overall, it's a quality spot for a drink before galumphing on. read more

Loved this dive bar-esque place. My personal preference, I didn't love the drink options. I knew I wasn't staying long but I have to tip my cap to the bartender (sorry forgot his name). But I told him about my venture, visiting London for a quick weekend and wanting to bar hop through Shoreditch. He was surprised I was in the neighborhood considering I was staying in Soho. He commented Shoreditch was a bit of a journey but he appreciated the effort and wrote down a list of bars he recommended. He gave about 6-7 and my partner and I managed to hit 3. A cute bar with always changing cocktail menu. There is a "speakeasy" area in the back behind the mirrored closet. However, I didn't love the vibes of this place. We sat in lounge-y area and I had to shout to make any conversation with my small table of 2 other friends. The staff were super friendly though! So I trekked here with the intention of having one drink and calling it an early night since I had to fly out the next day. Nope. My friend and I are from Canada and randomly stumbled across this place. We sat at the bar and were warmly greeted by the bartenders. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and we enjoyed watching them create various cocktails. I would recommend trying "popeye and olive oil" if you want something different and unique. Hehe, not being a hipster, I'm behind the times in a lot of ways. The explosion of speakeasies in London has rather passed me by, partly because I don't drink and partly because I don't hang out in Shoreditch that often! Fortunately, I can rely on my Yelp friends to put me right. My Yelp Elite friend Lorrie M was visiting from the States and her frighteningly comprehensive timetable of places to visit included Callooh Callay. We met with local Elite Tirthankar D for dinner at Tayyabs (another great call by Lorrie) and we then went for after-dinner drinks at Callooh Callay On entering, we found ourselves in a busy bar area but the bar tender told us to 'head back'. Fortunately, Tirthankar knew what he meant and walked into what appeared to be a closet at the back of the bar area. Like the book, we emerged into a fairy tale land. Not quite Narnia but a large lounge area We were then given cassette boxes with the drinks menu on the cassette covers. I can't believe this place has such subpar reviews. Where else are you going to go walk into a closet, an actual closet, and come out the other side into a nice, lounge, bar area? Thanks to a fellow Yelp Elite and Yee Gan O., I was introduced to this little "speakeasy" of sorts. I do agree, though, since there was no prohibition ... well I guess this is just the hype of the times. Either way, we walked into this happening little spot, and was directly promptly to the back room through said closet (apparently I'm obsessed ...) to seat ourselves where we'd like. Then we were handed these cassette tapes, and some jokes ensued about if I was old enough to remember. Of course!! Their awesome menu's are in these cassette tapes, and it's very, very well done. The whole theme is amazingly put together and I love the eccentricity of the decor and the lighting. The drinks were great, and I suppose on par with pretty much what a US place would charge for a speakeasy drink (or maybe ... even less???) and the drinks were delicious as well! I used to seriously love this place. After Nightjar (which is still and hopefully always will be amazing and inventive and my happy place), this was my fav spot in Shoreditch for cocktails. After my last experience here, I'll probably be skipping it next time I'm out for cocktails in the area. A group of friends and I were out in the area and not in the mood to standing in a crowded bar shouting at each other over the music and having beers spilt on us by the other drunkards. So we decided it was time for some excellent cocktails with a funky lounge vibe. I immediately thought of Callooh Callay (because lets me honest, no one is walking up to Nightjar without a reservation and getting in). I was almost equally doubtful that Callooh Callay would have any open tables but we were right down the road so I figured why not go and see, maybe we would get lucky. We arrived and were seating immediately in their front room, fantastic luck I thought! After having some cocktails, I realized it wasn't luck but the fact that this place isn't as good as it used to be and people have started to figure it out. Like most places in Shoreditch, you have to find this place down a sketchy looking street that you imagine Jack the Ripper used to hang out. Once you find the door and enter - you are greeted by a mix up funky 70's style decor a la Disco Stu from the Simpsons meets the Antiques Road Show. So I started a Friday night of drinking in Shoreditch meeting 2 Yelp friends here - shout out to Jane G and Isabel F! We arrived separately, but could thankfully find each other since the front half of this bar is really quite small. Points go to: - The menus, designed to be like the leaflets that you it into Oyster card holders as promo material, very cool. Even cooler since I stole the Oyster card holder and can now be sporting a various shades of blue accessory with cocktails in large letters on the front, thereby announcing to the world my likely cocktail addiction! - The cocktails, nice and not ridiculously priced. - The bar staff, recommended a couple to us and were very chatty - The secret backroom, through the secret door. Not giving away secrets, but I did feel a bit like Peter, Susan, Edmund & Lucy (cheeky hint for the literary amongst you!) There are 2 different rooms: one at the front and one behind the wardrobe. The menu is a sticker book without the stickers so you don't know what the drinks look like until you order them. The drinks were a little too strong for my liking but that's my personal opinion. The whole place also smelled like vomit but I think we just went on an unlucky day maybe. On our quest to discover Shoreditch nightlife, we came to Callooh Callay for a drink. It was almost 11pm when we arrived, and we were surprised when, at the door, we were greeted by two bouncers who asked if we were over 21. It was one of those moments when, like at customs, you are asked intrusive questions and feel hot shame crawling over you even though you are in the right and did nothing wrong. Am I over 21? My goodness, do I not look over 21? What if I'm not over 21? I could be under 21... We answered that we were and were allowed access, but then stopped to ask a waitress why we needed to be over 21 and not 18, which is the legal drinking age in the UK. She laughed and said that over 21s were more fun, less hassle. Glad about being on the right end of the cut-off, we sat at a low table in the middle of the room and set about ordering drinks. The bar is dark and animated, and rather sparse: it could have, and maybe should have, more tables in the central room. They seemed to value their exclusivity to an extreme: a couple came in and sat down, and they were told that there was no more room and that they couldn't sit. If everyone had scooted over a mere inch, they would have had enough room! Not that we were unhappy about this: we liked having the space. We also liked where we were sitting. From there, we could witness people walking in and out of the wardrobe, which led to the toilets and the private back room. Nothing beats a secret back room whose entry is through the closet. I ordered the Gringo Fix, a whiskey drink with root beer that hit the spot. My friends enjoyed their gin and rum cocktails, equally flavorful and sophisticated. We managed to order one round of fries, too, before the kitchen closed. They were like McDonalds fries: thin, light, and crispy, that you could pop into your mouth by the fistful. To dip, there was a small pot of sriracha ketchup on the side. They were so good we tried to order another, but alas, the kitchen was closed. There were two downsides to the Callooh Callay experience: the front room, in all its sparseness, became uninteresting quite quickly. And my drink and my fiancé's drink were dominated by a column of ice, so there was very little actual drink. read more

Cost to worth it rating: 4 Return worthiness: yes High - Layout: a standard looking bar up front but you can walk through the wardrobe--so lion and witch of them--and find another hidden gem room in the back. - Decor: so crazy but cool. From a gramophone to multiple disco balls to a Space Invader wall and dim red lighting, it covers a lot of fun themes. There's even a wall covered in cassette tapes that takes me back to the days when people would make others mix tapes :-) - Drink menu: served with a choose a paint color thin slab on a ring type format, it has so many interesting cocktails with names like Grow a Pear, Mary's Magic 8 Ball, Ale of Two Cities, and Flippin' Nuts. This is the place for me, nice setting, especially the back room which is super cosy for a date and the drinks are inventive and every bit as exciting, as the name promises. Price wise, they are pretty standard around the 10 pounds mark. What impressed me was the service, the waitresses were constantly keeping us topped up with water and were also on hand to recommend some great cocktails. My personal favourites were two classic cocktails which weren't even on the menu, a pisco one, which was every bit as potent as you'd expect and one called rum jungle, which my date loved! This is a really fun cocktail place. There are 3 sections to it: the front section which welcome walk-ins, the back section you have to make reservations and there is a hidden upstair section and you'd better know enough to be asking about it. Of all the sections, I like the front the most. It is always super busy here and getting seated isn't always easy. There are two bathtub turned couches and they tend to be quite popular. The front room is quite small and you can see a thick and heavy door that looks like a closet door at the back of the room. It is actually the door to the back and upstairs sections. It is much bigger than meets the eye. They are quite creative in their cocktail and menu design. I think the most recent menu is London Tube inspired. The menu actually comes in an Oyster card holder. A while back, it was high school year book inspired. Each drink has a fun description with a year book picture. We went here for a birthday celebration after reserving a table and calling to let them know we were going to be late a few times we got in and shown to our private booth no problem. The cocktail selection was incredible there was so much to choose and after coming from another cocktail bar close by (98 bar) visually they looked better and they tasted better too! Our waitress was so helpful - pointed us in all the right directions including a superb sister bar in soho that we later visited. My two drinks were beautiful in very different ways. The adastra is a gin drink with a basil oil that kisses you each sip with a roundness that i could not get enough of. However the verdona was a dry vegetable forward fantasy. There are odd colors, weird chairs, curvy sofas, crazy mirrors, and the list goes on and on. One of the decor highlights was definitely the armoire door frame. When you have three wildly different cocktails bars located under one roof, how can anything ever be the same? Answer: it can't. Upon entering Callooh Callay, it's got all the markings you'd expect from a bar of this ilk. Dim lighting, reclaimed wood, slender bartenders with various patterns of facial hair... but it's the other bells and whistles that make it such an intriguing experience. Mosey into the bathrooms and you'll see a collage of cassette tapes plastered to the tiled walls. They're likely to appear on your social media feeds instantly. Head left at the end of the main bar and push on a door to enter a secret room with an entirely different personality. Bright, midcentury modern furniture dots the landscape in a perfectly haphazard formation. You'll even find a couple of clawfoot bath tubs that have been converted into cozy couches for lounging. It's the polar opposite of where you've just come from. The next hidden nook is located up a flight of stairs at the far right end of the bar. You'll need to know some insiders to enter into this space as it requires some secret intel, but lucky for me I've got very hip friends. Inside you'll find a small bar that seats a handful of patrons with a guest bartender that rotates on a weekly basis. The mustachioed man making our drinks hailed from Norway, and they were so tasty, they almost seamed dangerous. He also made a mean salted chocolate brownie that knocked our socks off. Undoubtedly the highlight of this place is walking through the Narnia-style wardrobe through to the back room or upstairs bar. However even those without bookings in such covert locations can live up the experience simply by wishing the visit the bathroom, so the exclusivity isn't exactly red rope. The down side is, that if all your group aren't exactly sure where the bar is (or the secret 'back' to the bar at least... the phone reception isn't at its best in good old Narnia and the clandestine effect is somewhat ruined by needing to run out to and fro into the front bar or even into Rivington street to flag down confused party attendees). The cocktails hover around £10-13 and the amount of time we had to wait for them to be served might have suggested a painstaking care in their concoction as on a Tuesday night we were only one of two tables seated... not that libations were sloppy when the did arrive but for these prices Shoreditch certainly offers better... The drinks menu is presented in a high school year book, but I can't say I was hugely inspired. A lot of them tasted just very boozey without the nuances in the variety of ingredients listed. I like to taste the layers in a well made cocktail but this wasn't really the best opportunity. The service was quite slow, I'll be lenient on this as we were not exactly in a rush. The food however was a total waste of money. Tiny portions at not so tiny prices will not do much to quash the hunger of edacious individuals and beside was nothing remarkable. I've got to say, after all the hype and good Yelp press this place got, I was expecting more. I got even less than my downside case would have believed. I'm guessing this place was a lot different a couple of years ago, but it's fallen from grace and aged as well as a cheap barrel of tequila. Where to start? Well being slightly OCD (I blame my former job), let's make a list! 1. Front of house - We had booked a table for my friend's bday and she was already in there waiting for us...at the table. Why is this important? It proves that a) we had booked a table, b) the reservation exists in their world, and c) they had confirmed this by seating her there. When we rocked up to the front of the line, we were told that we would have to wait as there was no table under her name. So we called her and she came out but the bouncer still wouldn't believe her. Ridiculous. Took almost 20 minutes before a manager sorted things out. 2. Atmosphere - A Saturday night in Shoreditch can usually be an energetic and wild night out. As it should be. Callooh Callay (henceforth known as CC cause I can't be bothered to write it all out multiple times) was as dead as the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve. Perhaps that's not completely true, there was some music in the front bar but nothing in the table area except some drunk girls on a hen night. 3. Drinks - Ordered the big mixed punch bowl for my friend (it was her bday after all) and was told we had to wait as hen party had the only bowl they owned. Seriously CC? You put a drink option on your menu, draw as much attention to it as you can, and then you can only provide 1 at a time? Fail! 4. Cocktails - They were okay, but the best part was the comic book style menu, not the actual drink. A couple of them tasted worse than the trash can punches we made in college. Again, fail. 5. Getting the bill - It took ages and we finally had to go up to a register and demand to let us pay. We should have just walked out. Overall, don't bother. Go somewhere else, anywhere else. Drinks will be tastier, cheaper, and the crowd more alive. Hell the kebab shop was more entertaining than this. read more

To that nameless pub round the corner ? But i went there yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. Maybe to that pub named after some royal body part. King's arms ? ... or was it called the Queen's head ? Damn it ... i can't remember ... but they are all the same anyway. So i decide to walk a bit and come to Callooh Callay. What a name ... i start with a floor of two stars just because of the name :) This cocktail bar was a pleasant surprise. It was weekday evening, but still there were quite a few people around. They had a 4 page cocktail menu (which asked me to tip and drive and not drink and drive) printed in tabloid style, with the 3rd page being "Random Shit". The drink was good, and more importantly, strong. They are not stingy with alcohol. I like that !! I saw groups ordering the punch bowl ... which comes with a gramaphone. Mental note to myself: Next time come with more people and order that. In fact, i might order that even if i don't come with many people :) The music was very nice. Now i don't know much about western music and so i can't tell you what i heard ... but it was soothing and i liked it ... that is all that matters to me. The place was the evening version of Starbucks, here I could peacefully spend the evening ... the 3rd place, away from home and work. After all the hype, we went. We drank. We marvelled. We stumbled out. Pissed. Had the foresight to book ahead here for a Friday night (check me out!) and we ended up in a sweet booth in the bar back - through the much celebreated cupboard door - and whilst there is no bar out the back, the decor is exciting and you get a very attentive server to help you out with your drinks. The drinks - fantastic. I got right stuck into the cocktails, didn't I. They're not cheap, but there's a certain amount of pleasure in throwing some money at a drink and being blown away by it. Yum Yum Yum. We didn't stop drinking until we were told that the table we'd booked was reserved from 9pm. Fair enough, we knew that at the time of booking. The staff were courteous and friendly and even recommended another bar to move onto (Casita). It was a bit of a mission trying to get our of here though - the front bar was PACKED with a queue outside. Book ahead people, book ahead. You'll be glad you did. read more
