I was originally told that it would take 2 hours prior to booking the appt so I am wondering how I got charged 5 times for $26 along with the cost of the wash and blow. I was not even given a heads up by the receptionist until my child's hair was almost finished!!! I end up paying an extra $130 for my child's hair!! And you are tricked because you're not told upfront. So for a 10 year old I paid almost $300. Insane!!! If I knew that's what they do I would have never even booked an appt. I find it crazy that someone would feel good charging $281 for a 10 year old. And to be quite honest my child's hair looked horrible after. No one would ever guess $281 for just paid for her hair. I don't like bashing black business because I know it's hard enough- but I want to save someone from agony! To keep it short, I paid $575- yes $575, for highlights, color, cut & style. When I only came in for highlights and cut. Knowing this I would've went to my old hairstylist for 1/3 of the price for a BETTER outcome. My hair was only PARTIALLY highlighted, she cut most of it off after coloring. So only half of my head was barely colored. Then the stylist added a full color of light brown without my permission- which added 10 years to my age- I'm only 24 and I looked 40! On top of that, my appointment was at 10am- the stylist strolled in without apologizing 30 minutes later- non chalant about her tardiness. No class or home training. You call ahead to respect my time- I didn't even eat breakfast that morning to be on time. I should've left at that red flag. The only reason I'm giving 1 star is for the DECENT courtesy and vibe during the visit. My family and friends almost dropped to the floor when I came home and told them how much I paid when comparing it to my results. I wouldn't recommend this salon to my family's dog. Once again I didn't want to write this review because I never do- but hopefully this will save some poor soul. Btw their prices on their IG don't match in person. I would've added a picture of the style but as soon as I got home I dyed my hair back to Jet Black to remove the tragedy they called highlights an hour after. Did my big chop at Suite Beverly's Black Door Salon last December and always felt welcomed by the staff and my stylist. I came in on short notice due to moving and traveling, so my thick hair needed extra attention. I was apologetic, knowing it's a tough job, but my stylist reassured me as others have before. However, the environment shifted from welcoming to one where I felt judged and uncomfortable when the owner made off-putting remarks about needing more brushes during my detangling and whispered about pricing with another stylist who seemed reluctant to trim my thick coarse hair. I was taken aback when the final service quote for a trim was $40-$50 more than initially stated, which I declined. I left feeling hurt by the unnecessary comments, secretive discussions, and sudden price hike. This salon was my refuge as a black woman with natural hair, now I'm disheartened and hesitant to ever return to any salon. I booked an appointment for this salon based on the information and post on instagram. I visited their website which I thought listed the prices of their services, so I booked an appointment for a rod set, which is clearly priced as $130. So I decided, hey it's a little pricey, but I can handle that. I called the salon to make my appointment and they require a no refundable $50 deposit. I provide them my credit card information. I login to their appointment database online & I notice my service on the day I was supposed to have appointment is $155.97 not $130, this is roughly a $26 difference. So I call the salon and was told the prices on the website vary and are based on the stylist's experience. Clearly, there is nothing on the website that states this policy. Mind you, I have previously gone to salons that clearly state this policy. IT seems to me that it's all about the money at this point the love of the craft is gone.. Are they really all licensed . If not licensed prices shouldn't be that much . I've been to this salon maybe a handful of times and really enjoyed the service. The reason why I'm giving this salon "1 star" is because when I booked my appointment I specifically asked for the price of the service and it was communicated to me that the price would be $140 which included a trim/cut and a coils set. A week before my appointment I called again just to confirm the price and the receptionist confirmed the price that was initially stated. The day of my hair appointment, I'm happy with the service and satisfied with the end result, i was met with an additional $45 charge which they classify as "Extra Time" because of the length of my hair and its thickness. ***Mind you my hair isn't even shoulder length ***I tell the receptionist that it was never communicated to me during the entire process that I would be charged an additional fee. I also spoke to the owner Danielle and her response was that I've been undercharged in the past. . I was very upset and took this form of service as a bait and switch. Love this place! There aren't a lot of black owned, natural hair care salons in NJ so it's definitely a nice option to have. My favorite part of this salon specifically is that there is never a long and unnecessary wait period. When you have an appointment set for a specific time, you will get started within at least 15 mins or less, which makes this salon SOAR above the rest. I will say it is pricey but I guess that's good marketing on their part because there are so many limited options in NJ. If money isn't a concern for you, this is definitely the place to go; if you're on a bit more of a budget like me, it's still the place to take care of your hair...just not as often. I haven't quite found my footing on which stylist best meets the needs of my hair. (Currently recovering from a silk press that looked like a complete disaster the day after lol) but I'm sure I will eventually because everybody there is talented. I went there to get a cut. Although my hair is thinning in the front through to the crown, this was specifically explained to the stylist Jillian. I showed her a picture and specifically stated, CUT AS LOW AS YOU CAN GO WITHOUT MY SCALP SHOWING!! I showed her a second option. She proceeded to show me a cut she did on a previous client. Again..I instructed her to go as low as she can WITHOUT my scalp showing. I was asked what color did I want to dye it. I SAID BLACK, but I listened to her and went with a burgundy. I absolutely love this salon. I was referred by many different people (sorority sisters, people I met in the grocery store, and even women from my church) and I'm so glad that I took the risk of trying a new hair salon when I relocated back from California. I've come here for a big chop (part two!), deep conditioning, cut, color, trims, natural styles and have never been disappointed. Danielle refuses to let me walk out the door without making sure I'm 100% satisfied and I appreciate that. She also coaches me on how to maintain my hair (style & overall maintenance) which is tremendously valuable. Let's face it, it's a popular salon with great stylists who pride themselves for great customer service once you walk into the salon and that means making sure they meet the needs of every customer. So yes, there may be a little wait time every now and then, but while I've waited, both stylists and washers have checked in on me and offered water, etc. I just bring a book, chat with other women and make new friends. Ashley was my stylist and I can say that in my 8 years of having natural hair that it's the best that my hair has looked. She was courteous, professional and also knowledgeable about natural hair. When she started to explain the composition of hair after I asked a question about protein, I knew I was onto something good. I received what's called a baby chop and classic coils with a few wand curls and I'm extremely happy with my results, which leads me to add that I was in and out within 3 hours, which is pretty impressive. This salon came highly recommended, so I booked an appointment for my daughter for November 9 at 4:30pm. I arrived around 4:15, early I know, so did not expect to be serviced at that time. I did, however, expect to be serviced by 5:30. We sat there and waited for the stylist to complete two people and someone who arrived after us. When my daughter moved to the shampoo bowl, I thought ok. But she sat there, too. If she really didn't need her hair done, I would have left! ugh, here goes....I was referred here by a friend who is also natural and was very excited to find a salon that tends to natural hair AND near by too! Usually I would have to schlep into NY to go to Devachan or any of those other places and wind up paying $100 or more just for a damn trim. So when my friend told me about this place, all I thought was "FINALLY!" Ok, I made my first appt which was for a cut and some highlights with a junior stylist. I arrive a few minutes before my appt time and the receptionist addresses me by my name and seems very personable. She says "you're here for a trim, right?" I respond, "and highlights." Looking confused, she tells me that the stylist doesn't have time for highlights today. Huh? That's what I booked, and this is the girl who booked my appt! I asked if someone else could do my hair...so a senior stylist, Danielle wound up trimming and highlighting my hair. Initially, I was going for copperish tones but when she lifted my hair it came out kinda cool- like an ombré. She said if I put a copper on top that it wouldn't go back to blonde so maybe to rock the blonde a bit and I could always put the copper on top later. So that's what I did. Mind you, I was going to leave with wet hair because they charge an extra $35 just for a twist out, which I can do myself ! But I was already there, and don't spend money on my hair like, Ever. So I got all the works done which nearly came to $200. Yikes. They used Jane Carter to twist my hair and I literally sat under the dryer for nearly two hours because that stuff would NOT dry! Also, I got my hair cut into a tapered cut that day so I had A LOT less hair. I wound up unraveling the twists, while slightly damp because they were closing and I wanted to see what it looked like before leaving. It was new for me-the highlights were more on the yellowish side when they dried but it was still kinda cool and the cut was solid so I'm like "hey, I could rock this." After a while, I was over these blonde highlights and wanted the copper -what I wanted originally. I booked my appt with Adia (junior stylist) because Danielle's prices were too high just for some highlights. This time I wanted a few more highlights evenly distributed around my head. I had pictures as a reference and all. As she was lifting my hair, I noticed she lifted a very large patch in the middle of my hair and when she washed it out that entire area was damn near white. It didn't look right at all, nor like what I had asked for but I didn't freak out because she hadn't yet put the red on top and I was TRUSTING her as a stylist. When she put the red on top, sat me under the dryer and finally washed it out...there were a lot of different red tones, but it certainly wasn't distributed properly. But! It was still wet! Clearly, I was keeping hope alive, lol. I left with my hair wet because I was NOT paying an extra $35 for two strand twists this time. When this ish dried...I swear to you...I looked like Woody Wood Pecker! I was mortified! And had a photo shoot in two days. I called the shop hysterical and had to wait for Danielle to call me back, who also seems to be the manager. I went in the next day...and honestly, she (Danielle) was NOT apologetic at all! She seemed completely not phased and unbothered and asked "so what do you want to do?" I told her I wanted to go back to my natural color and she told me they wouldn't charge me anything to tone it down or break up some of the color in the middle of my head (and make it look more like the photo) but if I wanted to go back to my natural color they would need to put a demi permanent on top which would cost $55. Talking bout "that's policy!" Excuse me ? UNBELIEVEABLE. If they didn't screw up my hair I wouldn't have to pay anything to undo the damage that was done! At that point, I had lost all trust and thought the safest and best thing to do was to make my hair one color. Sure I was very upset, but I was not rude, or nasty...I didn't curse anyone out. I just wanted it fixed. Them charging me was going to be the deciding factor as to whether I return or not. Danielle toned it down and then applied the demi permanent. Yes, they charged me and CLEARLY, because of that I will never return. See here is my thing...when you are running a business, mishaps happen. I get that!! But if you screw up, you must take ownership! And are obligated to fix it and repair the relationship with that customer so that they will hopefully return-even if that means not charging them $55 just to mix and apply some demi permanent color -___- so that you can maintain a good relationship and so that that client will potentially bring more clients your way. Even if it means bending "policy." -____- But, like I said...it didn't phase her. I do appreciate the Junior stylist for coming over to me to apologize before I left. My boo and I wandered into Suite Beverly the other day; he needed a haircut (or de-mulletizing, whichever), and the sign out front advertised 50% off for first-time walk-ins. The space is charming without being too cute. It's respectable for a dude to hang out in, but it does keep a secret stash of trashy lady magazines in the cabinet. The music is good too - a lot of funk and motown. It was about a 15 minute wait for a chair. The lady working on my boyfriend (Danielle) was patient with his vague descriptions of what he wanted and even pulled out a laptop to look up Roger Federer's haircut when I stepped in to explain that's what he really wanted (he was just too embarrassed to march in and yell, "give me the Federer!"). The whole staff was attentive, friendly and chatty without being over-the-top, and at the end boo had a really good-looking, manageable hairdo. Prices are decent - not cheap, but reasonable: starting at $55 for women's haircuts and $35 for men. And they have a ton of great promotional stuff (like discounts for first-timers and for referrals) going on right now because they're trying to get the word out. I've gone to Suite Beverly at least every two weeks since it opened. My Stylist (Danielle) has the best cut and color skills in New Jersey - and maybe in America (and I've lived all over the country). I tend to prefer a trendy look and often when I've shown Stylists what I want done, it doesn't turn out the way I'd hoped, not because I don't have the right texture of hair to do what I'm asking, but rather because I'm looking for something nontraditional that requires skills not used on a normal basis. Danielle's talents exceed my expectations. Danielle is vocal about what products are best for my hair and she often thinks about the next look that she'd like to try on me. However, she's not pushy and will ultimately let the customer make the decision. I love the vibe and I love that I don't have to wait ages to be serviced. Everyone in the salon is professional and attentive, the salon is clean and organized and the ambiance is upbeat without being distracting (an added bonus since I'm typically doing work while at the salon). I've been going here for about the last three years and cannot say enough good things about not only my stylist, Meg but virtually every single member of the staff past and present.
