From the street, I initially thought this was a boutique selling perfume and incense, but quickly (and happily!) realized my mistake upon entering, where I was enchanted with a sprawling section of yes, scents, but also cocktail mixers, bath and body products, chocolates, teas, wines, tonics, tinctures, and naturopathic remedies for just about anything that ails you! I swiftly descended upon and scooped up a bottle of Oahacan Old Fashioned chocolate and chili bitters for mixing into some whiskey back home, completely oblivious that it said to mix with Mezcal on the bottle, but it worked really well my way, so no complaints! This is the sort of shop where I would spend far too much money on a regular basis, so I'm slightly thankful that I would have to drive five hours to get back here. Hopefully the residents of Langley are wealthy enough to keep a fantastic small business like this running year round, so I can come back during our visit next year, and be charmed all over again! read more

As we headed out for our camping trip, I knew I'd regret not stocking up on my my favorite sodas (DRAM, omg...) and was hoping to find them "out in the wild". And I had zero expectations of finding the Phony Negronis I have fallen so in love with... so I adjusted my attitude and settled on sparkling water. I've recently stopped drinking alcohol for a multitude of good reasons and have found that a really good beverage is deeply satisfying. Even BETTER is a perfectly balanced craft mocktail. There are genius bartenders creating absolute masterpieces with NA spirits and I have become obsessed with seeking them out and learning the craft. But I always hit a wall when I attempt to research the products being that the internet is filed with sponsored reviews and taste is so very subjective. Then Sugarpill happened. EVERYTHING on my impossible list is in there! I had to remain focussed to keep from turning my head in every direction where I would inevitably find yet ANOTHER thing I absolutely could not live without. The tinctures, the herbs, the ointments, all my stuff... the DRAM! And my beloved Phony Negronis!!! I died. Karen walked us through some different brands of NA Spirits with tastings and sound explanations for the flavor profiles. She probably saved me a bundle considering all of the HIT&MISS research I was preparing to do in the field of mock-mixology. YES, some taste like slightly flavored water. SOME taste like actual somethings and they are a delicious ingredient for fascinating mocktails. Afterward, we followed her advice and headed to The Roost for a mind-boggling mocktail experience. I did sip my husband's alcoholic "Italian Hand Gestures" as prescribed by Karen. JFC... holy. I love this store. The concept, the products, the experience, the interaction... My daughter and I visited this shop yesterday and were half greeted by the owner. I say half greeted because she was annoyed from the git when we asked her about her non-alcohol products. She asked what flavors we liked and my daughter said citrus. She proceeded to pour a sample in a cup which we tried. To say it tasted like citrus flavored floor cleaner is an understatement. She could tell from our faces that it wasn't something we liked. I asked what else was in it besides citrus. Her answer - "a lot of stuff." Like poison is what I was going to ask but my daughter kicked me before I could get it out. I even tried to redeem the situation by asking her if it came in a smaller bottle. Why I don't know because I wouldn't pay a nickel for that awful product. From there it went further down hill as she glared at us and it became obvious she wanted us out of her shop. By the way there wasn't another soul in it. Wonder why! I have been shopping in Langley for over 20 years and there have been a few, not many, cranky storekeepers. This woman is way beyond cranky and it's shopkeepers like her that give Langley a bad name. What a shame. Nice shop, horrible woman. read more

Any time I can support a queer-owned small business, I want to. But my experiences here have been incredibly mixed. Sometimes the proprietor is warm and friendly, and other times I've received downright snippy responses. I know we all have our bad days, and that customer service is a circus sometimes... but if you can't hide your disdain for someone who's in your store, they will start to shop elsewhere. This is an incredible place with beautiful and well-curated merchandise, but OUCH... I can no longer go in with the fear that today's going to be one of the days where I get treated like I'm just an irritation. read more

I love love love visiting Sugarpill in late December. I don't limit myself to December, but that's normally the only time I'm scrambling to find some gifts that are physical things. What's so great here? They have interesting and artisan/gourmet jams, salts, chocolates, bitters, jars of local honey, etc... and I think that's pretty awesome. This store is one of the reasons that I can't bring myself to buy anything from the Fab.com foodie shop. (I'd much rather just visit Capitol Hill and avoid paying for shipping.) I haven't had the chance to sample anything except the tiny little chocolate that the owner recommended one time (because I normally just buy gifts here), but if that chocolate represents the rest of the store... everything is freakin' amazing. Oh my! So i'm a HUGE fan of Wato soap, which Sugarpill carries. Automatically 5/5 for that. This is the first "in-person" shop that carries it in WA from my knowledge. That's what led me here! Along with that the store is great, it's definitely pricey but so cool to see the items they carry too. I'd probably say check it out first and then return another time with some extra cash and a list because you'll want to try so many things! Thank you for carrying Wato soap PS: the nice lady working was great, i've been to similar shops in which the employees don't feel welcoming. It was recommended to me to pop into this store to see if they had any recommendations for me. Unfortunately this experience was belittling, dismissive, and left no room for compassion. As I started to talk about what ailment I wanted to focus on relief for, before I could even finish my thought or my sentence, the employee cut me off saying "I'm gunna stop you right there, I can't help you". They went on to mansplain (not sure what their gender was but the term still applies) to me about my own health journey which if they had taken a moment to listen, they would have known a bit more about. No one is required to listen but the societal assumption with employees in stores is that they are there to at least try to help. They continued to lecture me on how certain medications can have harsh effects on the body and how the health care system bombards our bodies without giving it time to rest. I mentioned that I had been on this health journey for five years and yet for some reason they continued to talk to me as if I had no knowledge or understanding of what they were talking about. They tried to reassure me that they were doing this for my own benefit as they didn't want to waste my time. As someone who is chronically ill and a spoonie, I never waste my spoons, I can't afford to. In reality it felt like they didn't want to waste their own time and also for some reason believed that I was coming into the store for them to cure me when I was actually wondering if they had any recommendations for relief which for some reason they assumed I would take blindly as opposed to questioning the recommendation they could have given me. I have autonomy over my own body and own health to make my own decisions, I wanted to know what they recommend not that I should just leave the store as they wouldn't even try to help me. At the very least they could have let me finish my sentence and let me know that they believed that they couldn't help me in the ways they would have liked to as the issue was more complicated then a two minute conversation. Makes perfect sense, if you can't help that's fine but at least let me finish my sentence. Overall it felt as if this employee was making snap judgments about me. I am a white women in their mid twenties who is female presenting, and unfortunately I and many other women as well as gender non-binary folks can tell you (you need only to goggle women/non binary chronic health issues/ health issue in general) have all had many experiences similar to this due to various biases and discrimination (it case it isn't obvious, like everything else this affects women & non binary folks of color more). It is very possible that this employee was just having a bad day, we all have them. There are, I'm sure, many patrons who sing this stores praise. I only write this review to caution those who are chronically ill or on any kind of health journey that while they should definitely go in to see if they have a different experience, to keep your guard up a bit incase you have the same experience as I did. If you do visit this store, I truly hope you can find some relief. As you know all our journeys our different so yours might play out better. I hope it does. read more

Sugarpill is just lovely. I finally came in to browse after passing by the shop so many times, and I fell in love. The space is charming, high ceilings and dark woods, cozy, with shelves lining the walls, utilizing the small space to its best advantage. There is an amazing array of bitters, salts sourced near and far, locally-made chocolates and caramels, bath & body products, spices, oils... I was in awe. Little sample tins of salts and spices run at $3/pop, so you can try the varieties without feeling guilty. I settled on some of the absinthe & black salt caramels (delightful), a little tin of Chinese 5-spice and some Thai ginger infused salt. I also bought some 'bothersome cough' tea in hopes of ridding me of a persistent dry cough that has stuck with me for several weeks. I told the proprietor, Karyn, this and she warned me that the tea is dreadfully bitter (and oof, she wasn't lying, it's awful) so I should down it in the quickest way possible. Then she told me that if the tea doesn't cure it, to come in a few days later and she'd make me something stronger. Now that's an herbalist! I was in love. This place is neat!!!! It gives me modern witch doctor vibes which is really unique. They had a massive amount of product to the point where it was almost overwhelming. I picked up one of their mystery grab bags. It was $50, but it included $120 worth of products. I love a good mystery, and the contents were all usable and fun. So my two interactions with this store have been unanimously negative. First I called asked about something and was told that the woman I spoke with "doesn't discuss herbs on the phone." Apparently it's better customer service to waste your time going into the store to find out they don't have what you're looking for. Then, apparently because I didn't learn my lesson the first time, I did go into the store. She was just as rude and condescending in person as she was on the phone, and when I asked whether or not some herbs she was suggesting were metabolized by the kidneys or the liver, she behaved as though that was an outrageous question, and told me she "wasn't a scientist" but I could Google it if I wanted to. Of course, it turned out she didn't know the answer. Don't go here, go to someone who actually knows how their products work. Edit: The icing on the cake is that the owner is now claiming on her Facebook page that she threw me out of the store (I had already left) and that I'm lying about her Google comment. Delightful. A treasure trove of magical items tucked around the corner from Broadway, this little shop is deceptively full of the best things on the planet, from local food products to fancy imported bath goodies, this is one sweet little shop. Sweet, you see how I did that there? The owner is as knowledgeable as she is friendly, without any pushing, she can guide you to the 'don't miss' things in the store and seems to have exactly the same taste as I do... or is she clairvoyant? Either way, it works for me like a charm. Totally and utterly charming, from the decor to the products to the owner. I've driven by this place a few times (it's across from Molly Moons and adjacent Cal Anderson Park) and wasn't sure what was actually in here. But then I heard from a friend that you could get fancy jams from Deluxe Foods (a Seattle-based company) so I had to check it out. Inside the spaces has exposed wood beams and brick, soaring ceilings that must be 30 ft high in spots. There's some unique shelving and an inventive use of an old dresser to display the products by the window. The products are nicely laid out - with a wide variety of each category of item. On that note SugarPill has way more variety and items than I thought. There's all the fancy salts that others have mentioned (didn't sample those this time). There's some herbal products and remedies (not my scene, but there's a wide variety behind the counter laid out all old-time pharmacy style). More importantly there's a huge amount of CHOCOLATE - most of it organic and/or fair trade. On my visit I picked up some chocolate covered edamame. And on that note, dear Internet, why didn't anyone tell me this existed up until now? Chocolate? Good. Edamame? Good? Chocolate & Edamame? FSCKING GENIUS!!! I also picked up a spicy chili + dark chocolate bar named "Hottie". Back to the reason I came here, I picked up a couple bottles of jam from Deluxe Foods (mmm, jam). One's a pear butter with vanilla and the other's a peach preserves with vanilla and bourbon. Hopefully I won't get too drunk before 8am when I spread it on my muffins. And (shew, out of breath) there's also a few knick-nacks (cards, coasters, etc.) that seem like nice additions if you're putting together a gift out of the stuff here. IMHO, as someone who wouldn't be caught dead using a tincture or a poultice of any kind my review should carry more weight. This isn't just another "apothecary" style place with useless trinkets - it's an excellent addition to Capitol Hill and your speciality food needs. read more

Hopped in here to grab a gift for an out of towner. Sugarpill has lovely local picks and Karyn (the owner I think?) was lovely and extremely helpful. They have a wide range of custom designed salts and the packaging is very sweet and has a local handmade look. I paired a few salt selections with a bag of Portland based caramel corn. They have selections of chocolates and natural cocktail mixers as well. There were a lot of essences and other items but I didn't take a long look at them. A super-cute, olde-tymey-looking "apothecary" shop with lots of adorably packaged and expensive stuff - gourmet salts, fancy chocolates, artisanal honey and the like. If you're the type of shopper who doesn't mind throwing down $17 for a small paper sack of drinking chocolate, this is the place for you! The owner was friendly and the store is fun to browse through - dark wood cabinets and pretty displays of antique medicine bottles and vintage cosmetics. The gourmet salts are nicely displayed and you can get tiny sampling tins for $2.50, which is by far the cheapest thing in the store. They also have some yummy scented soaps and essential oils (which make it a very, er, fragrant store), and a few letterpress notecards and books. Cute, girly stuff to ooh and ahh over, but for the most part it's out of my price range. read more

Sugarpill - a serendipitous and serene discovery Yesterday afternoon I went for a small walk in the precious sun to break up the monotony of lying home ill with a head cold and a sore throat. After a quick stop at Elliott Bay bookstore, my reverie took me past Cal Anderson Park and luckily to the Sugarpill Apothecary. I did not browse, but instead approached the herbalist, Karyn, hoping she could suggest something to relieve my aching throat. She asked me a few questions about my symptoms, made some rather astute remarks about how a cold is going around where people think they're better when they're not (this happened to me,) and then she proceeded to mix me up a fantastic cure of elderberry, ginger, thyme, sage and more... Whether it was the sun, the newly purchased books, or Karyn's fabulously soothing tea, today I am happy to report the sore throat is gone and things are looking up indeed. I spend hours browsing the well-stocked aisles of the store, feasting with my eyes, and leave only with enough to be back again soon. Karyn (the owner) is the real gem of the store. She knows every intricate detail of the products in the store, and can regale you with the history and usage of each herb/spice and its healing powers. Every trip I make into the store I learn something new. If you think about it, it's a cheap and delightful way to educate yourself. I love that this place has ready-made, delicious spice mixes that will convince those who aren't so keen on mixing their own spices to cook more; I don't love that the spice mixes and salts more expensive than other flavored salts/bulk spices I buy. Granted, Sugarpill has a much greater selection of salts than I've seen before, but I'll stick to mixing my own spices. It is a convenient location and I bet rent is expensive, so if you can afford to pay for the owner's expertise or if you are a salt connoisseur, this shop is money. The packaging is also really nice, so it is a good idea for hostess gifts and stocking stuffers. They also have a wide selection of bitters, though they were a bit more expensive than I'd hoped. They had multiple bitters in 4 and 5 oz jars, and really, I can't go through that much in a reasonable matter of time (although it does last for years). I ended up buying a 1 oz jar of Bittercube Bitters, a small-batch Milwaukee brand that I know and love - my sister lives in Milwaukee and the guys who make it are really great people. When I buy it in Milwaukee, it's $8/bottle. At Sugarpill, it's $14. I understand the markup, and it's a top-notch product, but next time I might just buy from the source. Still, it is great knowing that if I need a bottle, I can get it just around the corner. Oh - the sales staff was super friendly, ALWAYS a plus. read more

I think it's time to admit to myself and everybody else that I'm a sucker for a tiny, handcrafted pot of jam. I always cringe at the price, then I always get it home and realize that it's worth every cent. I was on the hill and popped into sugarpill yesterday to feed my jam addiction. And as always, I was blown away with the unique products and wide variety. It's such a compact space, but the owner does a great job of keeping the inventory fresh and relevant. Of course, I left with an extra item, which I'm pretty sure I'll fall in love with too. I have yet to be disappointed with something I've purchased there. The owner is very friendly, and expertly walks the fine line between recommending new product and not being pushy. I've noticed that a couple of reviewers have complained about the prices. I've never done a side by side comparison, but I can honestly say I've never felt like I've paid too much for something. Most of the items she stocks are things you can't pick up at a grocery store. Sugarpill is like two awesome stores in one. When you walk in it may initially seem like a specialty foods store - the tiny shop is filled with culinary delights - salts, spices, chocolates and more. I love the selection of bitters, more than can be found at most liquor stores including the local brand Scrappy's. But wait! It is an herbal medicine shop as well! I buy essential oils here - the prices are not dirt cheap, but they are not especially inflated, and I trust Karen to sell me high quality oils (something I don't trust the sites online with better prices to do for me). The same goes for the tinctures - while the single tinctures are more expensive than some other sources, the quality is much higher. And what is the point of using herbal medicine if you aren't going to be using something potent? The greatest resource here is actually Karen herself. I happily pay her prices for herbal medicines because she always gives me straight advice. Before selling you an additional product or potion, Karen will typically recommend ammending your habits. She tries not to just get rid of your symptoms, but to actually find out what is making you feel ill. Make sure to stop in during the Capitol Hill Art Walk too, there are normally some samples, and great art up in the nook! read more

Outstanding. My review focuses on the apothecary ministration in particular. Whenever I have a cold or itch in my throat I will stop here first. Save yourself the $20 in over the counter cough meds and come here to find herbal products that soothe at wonderfully affordable prices. There have been four seperate instances where Sugarpill has saved the day! Their remedies, for me, and for other loved ones, can require some soaking, boiling, and maybe (not always) some nose plugging. But it will bring you ease. There are things I have learned here that you really cannot find on the internet (at least not easily) and truly lessen the wrath of a cold/virus. The lady who works here is PHENOMENAL! Her knowledge is VAST and watching her mix up herbs is such a warm experience as opposed to being in the back of grocery store waiting in line with four other miserable people. Going in this place is like walking into a neighborhood corner drug store back home, if (like me) you're old enough to remember the era before Rite Aid and Walgreen's. Only instead of traditional prescriptions there are herbs and tinctures, and instead of a soda fountain there's flavored sugars (whoever knew of such a thing?) and sweet treats from places you have never heard of. Glory be! And Miss Karyn. Oh my, what a peach! When she's not behind her counter mixing up some magical potion (it's not witchcraft, and yes I did ask), or giving someone valuable guidance on the do's and don'ts of this or that, she's being friendly and patient. I thought for ages that this apothecary sold herbal medicines. However, I read in Via Magazine's article "The West's Best Chocolate" that Sugarpill is only store in Washington that carries Snake and Butterfly chocolates. So I went in and discovered that this place actually sold salt, soap, chocolate, and other ethnic sauces. It's a very neat shop. I end up not getting the Snake and Butterfly chocolate because I found out that it was based in Campbell, CA, which is close to my hometown so I figured I can just go to their main store in CA. Sugarpill is such a delightful little store, and I am absolutely a fan of their collection of local products. This is our go-to spot for holiday and birthday gift shopping since they offer wide range of fun, high quality products! Ever since I heard that honey sold in grocery stores are barely "honey" as they are highly processed to extend their shelf life. So I always buy locally produced honey from Sugarpill. So far, I tried honey from Ballard Bee Company and Urban Honey Co, and both were quality. The specialty salt are sold by 3 or 4 different sizes from tiny sample size to bigger container, which allows me have all sorts of different salts for different cooking purposes. I also love their super cute Sugarpill brand containers they offer those salts! They can be stack nicely in my tiny kitchen. :) Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I absolutely ADORE Sugarpill. I was there on opening day and it's still my go-to place anytime I need to get gifts. The array of fancy salts is fantastic. I love that I can buy the small, sample-sized tins for around $3 or less. I stock up on two or three of those whenever I go in so I can try as many as possible. If I find one I like, I usually end up buying a larger tin as a gift for someone. Even the bigger containers are a good deal which is excellent because Sugarpill has caused an addiction to truffle salt on my air-popped corn. In addition to the salts they have lots of soap, interesting chocolate bars, local honey, a nice collection of bitters, and lovely-looking preserves (I do my own canning so I usually just scan the jams for any ideas I haven't already tackled). I haven't used the owner's services much for teas and health stuff but she has a ton of containers behind the counter and can probably whip things up for whatever ails you. I did go in once in a panic because I needed to make mustard for someone I'd promised it to and lo and behold she hooked me up with a large amount of mustard seeds for practically nothing.
