We started with the duck appetizer and it was fantastic! We then had salads and soup! Their French onion is fantastic! While we were fully prepared to dress up and go to a sports bar for dinner during our girls weekend…read morein Houghton Lake, East Bay Grille gave our group a better option. We made a reservation for 13 on a Saturday and they were ready and waiting for us. The table was prepared and two servers greeted us. The restaurant, located inside of the Springbrook Inn, is a bit difficult to describe. Comfortable with some kitsch, a bit of an upscale family restaurant with a reasonable wine list (also reasonable pricing). The menu is not extensive but hits all of the main American items: steak, seafood, pasta, soup and salad. All of the mains were served with mixed vegetables (zucchini, onion, pepper or sans pepper for me as requested) and a potato (which included rice in the category). We did have two vegetarians in the group and the grill was not very vegetarian friendly. They did offer a stuffed red pepper, which luckily both ordered and enjoyed. The rest of the group had a large variety: cajun pasta, steaks, shrimp, perch and my order of ribs. The cajun pasta had a good flavor and was not at all spicy (this could be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences). The only complaint was that only a lone shrimp was found in the dish (the menu did say shrimp, which while suggesting a plural, was not). Overall everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the ribs as was a bit disappointed. The meat was tender but severely over sauced. I also found the sauce to be average. I did really like the sauteed veggies. I would not agree with the other reviews that the food is outstanding. I felt it was good to above average, depending on the item. The service was five stars. Both servers were friendly and engaging, refilling promptly and were responsive in their check ins. My four stars are based on an overall good experience and the service certainly orchestrated this.

It pains me to leave a mere two-star review but I couldn't find much to like here. The quaint…read moreambience, friendly service (we were one of the first guests to arrive on a Friday morning mid-May) and fresh brewed decaf were the highlights. The food, which is most important, was a big disappointment. I am a cinnamon roll connoisseur and was so excited to try the rolls that past Yelpers raved about. They were out of caramel today so we ordered the grilled roll with pecans and homemade buttercream frosting. It looked dry and tasted even drier. Barely warm, flourey and tasteless. The frosting was the best part. The menu of choices looks wonderful and diverse for a small cafe. I was delighted to see shrimp and grits. The skillet was very small, the food was hot (a plus) but it was heavy on the grits, which lacked flavor and space on shrimp (only 4), sausage and sauce. I ate the toppings with half the grits and left the rest. My husband ordered the hoagie sandwich with hash browns. His comment was "a lot of bread and minimal filling" with "luke warm" hash browns that were more spongy than crispy. It's hard to go wrong with breakfast, but somehow Lazy Toaster has missed the mark. The concept is fun, the menu is great, yet the recipes and preparation could use some major improvements. The tab ($41 for two) was not bad, but was high for the quality. We liked the decor yet felt the cleanliness was lacking (sticky floors and no paper towels in the bathroom). A breakfast place in East Tawas is a plus; I hope this cafe commits to some improvements and stays around.

The service is good and the food quality is good. Probably the only complaint is that the hashbrowns aren't brown enough, but that's my particular taste. On busy days, I recommend getting there before 9 o'clock, it gets pretty busy and it's small so the weight can be a little bit long. I wish they had a few more healthy options. I like avocado toast but there's is lacking. It's just a piece of toast with some avocado spread on top, no seasoning, very bland. Also kind of small.
