I came for the Crab, Shrimp and Grits then decided to order the French toast platter since it is raved about so frequently. I called ahead since I figured they would be having a weekend rush and I was correct. The person who answered the phone was very pleasant although she seemed busy with taking orders. Upon arrival you may see a line and people walking up to place orders. This was nice to see, because it made me seem like the food would be worth the wait even though you shouldn't have to wait long for an order that's completed. Please note that this is a very small establishment (no seating inside - basically carry out) and they are currently only allowing 3 people in at a time (which is pretty much all that would fit in the first place). I ended up waiting much longer than I should have since my order was already ready upon arrival. The person manning the door was not helpful in trying to get orders out that were already completed and he doesn't open or hold the door so I assume he's possibly just there for security. He would ask for your name and then nothing would happen. When I made it inside, it was confirmed because he didn't relay any updates or shuffle the customers or anything. I think it would be best to have separate lines for pickup and ordering. People who walked up to place their order would wait inside until their order was finished while those who already had their order, had to wait outside in the cold. That doesn't make sense. And as an option/recommendation, if they want to monitor the number of people, have people place their order and then step back out so that people who are just picking up can step in and go about their business. The French toast itself was decent, I enjoyed the texture and flavor. My sides were eggs, home fries/potatoes and a sausage patty. The potatoes were good but the eggs and sausage is nothing to rave about. It was ok. The Crab, Shrimp and Grits are amazing. The portion is great as well. The photo does not do the meal justice. What you see in the photo is not soup, but the sauce that is full of crab meat and plenty of shrimp. While placing my order I was asked if I wanted onions or not, and of course I did and I think the onion brought more savory flavor to the sauce. The sauce is rich, but not heavy, it is very flavorful. I may not get the French toast again but I WILL go back for the grits. This meal saved this experience because if the grits were nasty, this would've definitely been a 2 star review. read more

I arrived less than 10 before my order was expected to ready and was greeted with a line of patrons inside waiting for their order. Everyone seemed moderately patient but I think most of us were not expecting the extended wait with an online order. This is not a dine-in spot, just a full kitchen with a pickup window. The staff seemed like they were managing well for the high demand of orders on a Sunday morning. I ordered the French toast platter with eggs, home fries and no meat. I waiting ~15 minutes after arriving before I received my order. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The French toast was good; didn't need any syrup and I skipped the powdered sugar. It was still sweet and delicious. The home fries were crispy and well seasoned. The scramble eggs were standard but a little runny so I suspect they use liquid eggs. Overall I enjoyed the food. Sugar Mama's remains THE place to get top notch soul food and brunch. Everything is reasonably priced, averaging about $10, though the platters, sandwiches, and subs all cost less than that. On the weekends, Mama's offers soul food specials not on the regular menu - check her Facebook page to see what they have. My favorites remain the waffle platter which comes with eggs and a meat. My wife likes the Collins Trio which is 3 pancakes, eggs, home fries and choice of meat. And those home fries... they're the best. They are perfectly cooked and seasoned. Apparently I've missed the memo on the french toast, but people rave about it - I'll have to get that next time. The jerk chicken and buffalo chicken cheesesteaks are solid. They can substitute coco bread if you want to mix it up. The side of mac-n-cheese is fantastic also. During COVID-19, Mama's has reduced her hours from closing at 7:00 to now closing at 3:00. In spite of that, business appeared to be booming last time I went. It's a small place, so they had to ask some people to wait outside in order to allow people to social distance. I looked at pictures on IG to see if it was just battered like French toast with no powdered sugar and it checked out. Unfortunately, I should've read the reviews on Yelp. The French toast is sweet due to them adding cinnamon sugar. Sweet steak is gross. I was nauseous and couldn't finish it. It was also pretty soggy. I ordered a sausage platter for my mom and the eggs and grits were unseasoned which I found strange. You can add salt and pepper on Toast but it doesn't tell you what exactly you're adding it to and there's not an area for notes. Plus I didn't add salt and pepper to her food assuming there was a minimum amount of seasoning. I mean the grits pot was massive and not seasoned ?? Strange. I got the french toast platter with scrambled eggs and grits, and I was able to substitute the meat for home fries for no additional cost. The french toast was very moist and more on the sweeter side, the home fries were seasoned well, and the grits were slightly too buttery but still tasty. I do want to note that this is not a sit down restaurant and parking is extremely limited, so it's probably best to order ahead for pick up. This was my first time trying Sugar Mama's and it was ok. I feel like their set up needs to be a little more organized and they should get a place that allows more space, but overall, it was a cool experience. For starters, you can only-ONLY- order online. Do not call, do not expect to walk in and they take your order. You can only pay by card- no cash. It gets extremely busy and you will be waiting. My suggestion- it is worth the wait, so order at least 45 minutes before you make your way to them. I got the French Toast platter, which consisted of two pieces of French Toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and their garlic home fried potatoes. It was fantastic! I'm not a fan of super sweet stuff, but the French toast was really good- fluffy, caramelized and buttery. The standout to me was the potatoes, I had never had home fries prepared that way, but these are by far the best I've had- seasoned well, not hard, just right. The young lady getting the orders was very patient with the impatient customers and made sure that she apologized about the wait and was very gracious even with upset customers. This is definitely one of those hidden gems of Baltimore and I intend to try their other entrees. read more

The consistent critique with this hole in the wall (it's literally just a counter that passes you a box of food) is the poor customer service. I went to place an order during their operating hours. I found out that they are closed early that day. They weren't apologetic or offering sympathies of any kind. This this information was relayed to me while the person behind the counter was talking to me with a mouth full of food and what looked like preparing the last few orders to go out the door, which is a nasty practice to accompany a nasty attitude. Extremely frustrated by the treatment I received and their business practices, I exited the store. Right across the street is a memorial where somebody has died apparently, and the spot is marked with about 50 bottles of Don Julio.
