I've been a fan of Sugar Loaf since their days slinging breakfast at Grant Park Farmer's Market. Now that they've opened a brick and mortar, of course I had to check them out and brought my in-laws. Pack your patience because there was a quite a long wait for Sunday breakfast. It's counter service and they will call your name when your order is ready for pick up. The only thing is that if you grab one of the tables outside, you won't be able to hear your name unless someone in your party sticks around inside. Of course, I had to get their chicken sausage, egg and cheese biscuit on a buttermilk biscuit with a decaf coffee. The sausage was juicy and the cheese nicely melted. The biscuit was perfect as well. It was a hefty biscuit but was so worth it. Nebi and Lindsay, the owners, are the kindest people ever and it shows from the love that you feel when you walk in their cafe! PS: if you park at the parking deck behind, they validate 2 hour free parking!

Traffic was pretty heavy that morning, and when I finally pulled up, I didn't see an open space right away. For a second, I thought about leaving, but I'm glad I didn't. Parking is actually pretty easy once you know the options--there's a garage nearby and street parking too. As soon as I walked in, I knew this was the kind of place I'd be excited to work from. I ordered a matcha latte and spotted the perfect seat by the window--it felt like it was waiting for me. The vibe was calm and creative, with just the right energy for working or people-watching along the BeltLine. The music was on point too, though it really depends on who's working--some days the playlist is an A+. My only real issue? The outlets. They were there, but during my first few visits, the ones at the booths didn't work. Maybe that's been fixed by now, but at the time it was the only thing that missed the mark. Still, this spot easily makes my list of favorite places to post up for a few hours. Between the matcha, the ambiance, and the overall vibe--it's an easy yes for me.

The handheld comes vegetarian with the option to add protein for an extra couple of dollars. The BLT comes on thick buttered toast, with the slightest hint of garlic and thick beefsteak tomato slices. I think it's really neat that they ensured whether we would want dairy or non-dairy in our chai lattes...kudos for that! Overall, we were full long before we finished our sammies & chai. The overall vibe of the coffee shop felt very intimate and community based. I loved all of the extra spots filled with community activities, and community made art or jewelry that was for sale in the shop. There was a large indoor area as well as a quaint outdoor patio that I can see myself enjoying during summer months. As for the coffee and service it was great. I tried the February specialty coffee (I can't remember the name at this moment) but it was really good and came out in no time at all. This spot is pretty quiet so it's perfect for working, meeting with friends or a cute coffee date.

It's frustrating enough that they now close so early, but we came in around 4:50pm a couple weeks ago (they close at 5). The barista said sorry but the espresso machine was already washed and shut down. The one thing you should make available at all times while open at a coffee shop is COFFEE. It only takes a few minutes to clean an espresso machine. So dumb. Happy the Bellwood within Plants & Coffee is staying put! Much better attitude, service, and coffee. Joe's has seemingly become too cool for school. :(

While it may appear welcoming and well-run on the surface, that image quickly falls apart when you look at how things operate behind the scenes. I have personally witnessed how the owner, Rahel, treats employees, and it is deeply concerning. As many other reviews have noted, there is a consistent pattern of unprofessionalism, poor communication, and a dismissive, often hostile attitude toward staff. What's most troubling is the disconnect between the public-facing atmosphere and the internal reality. Customers may see a polished environment, but behind that façade are employees who feel uncomfortable being themselves, who are reprimanded unfairly, and who are neither properly valued nor treated with respect and dignity. A business is only as strong as the way it treats its people, and unfortunately, this establishment falls short in that regard. I would STRONGLY encourage others to take this into consideration before choosing to support it.
