I wanted to buy cupcakes locally for my husband's birthday, so this morning I called the bakery And specifically asked what time they're open until so that I could grab cupcakes for tonight. So the Gal on the phone said they are open until 6 PM. I show up at 2 PM, and a lady greets me at a closed locked door Telling me that they are closed for training from 1 to 3. I explain I asked earlier on the phone how late they were open and they did not divulge the information about the training. It's hard with 2 small children to get out of the house and I drove across town to come here, I asked if I could just get 2 cupcakes and she said no as she Did not want to interrupt the training. I had a small window of time to run to the grocery store and also to get the cupcakes, I wanted to buy locally but now I will not be buying at Sugar lab again. I understand being closed for a meeting, but if you do not give the correct information to your customers how can we come at the appropriate times? It would have meant a lot to me if someone would have just sold me two cupcakes because I drove out of my way and also called earlier to make sure that I could get the cupcakes at this time. We ordered the black and white cake because I like to offer two flavors for a party cake. That way, there is something for the chocolate lovers but not too overwhelming for people who would prefer an alternative. Cupcakes and other treats are HEAD AND SHOULDERS above every other prominent cupcakery I've reviewed in ventura and santa barbara counties thus far. While they don't have much variety in desserts yet, there are still many choices of cupcakes, flavored marshmallows, and white chocolate macadamia nut popcorn. Our wedding cake ended up having 4 tiers and each one was a different flavor and filling. Awesome bake shop! Found it while looking up directions to Dicky's BBQ. Me & a coworker went here on Friday after work one day to treat ourselves. I was just going to get one cupcake but everything looked so good I ended up getting a lot more haha I got 3 cupcakes: their chocolate (it was either vegan or gluten free I can't remember which), the Princess Bride, and Cookie Dough. I also got a chocolate sea salt cookie, chocolate chip and a cookie sandwich which had frosting in the middle. My coworker also got a cookie & two macaroons (I forget which flavors). Everything was amazing and delicious! I ate all my treats over the course of a weekend so obviously a few ended up in the fridge. My cupcakes did get hard but (and for some reason a lot of people don't know this) that happens with baked goods when you put them in a fridge. Took them out and let them get to room temperature and they were just as good again ^__^ There was a small issue with one of my cupcakes, didn't bother me but I figured I'd let them know. I went in the following Monday and talked to the woman who was working the counter. She honestly seemed more bothered by the issue than me and offered me a free cookie. Overall I loved everything I tried and this will definitely be my go to bake shop. read more

This place is right across the street from my house at their new location and oh my goodness! I wish I didn't love their cupcakes so much. I have celiac disease so finding a place that is super careful and aware of cross contamination is difficult, but I have never had an issue here. I always used to drive out to Sprinkles in Westlake to get a gluten-free red velvet cupcakes and I will never make that drive again. They have a different gluten-free flavor every day of the week (so I'm literally in heaven). I've never had a stomach ache or a bad reaction, and the girls working there are always super, super sweet and helpful. Oh! And their macaroons are also amazing and have never given me a reaction either. I am so happy that they are so close to me and I love that I've found a place that can satisfy my sweet tooth without having to worry about it making me really sick. We got 6 different flavors and decided to cut them up into sections so that we could try all of them because we couldn't pick just one. We only made it through the first 3 between five of us---because they are very rich (not a bad thing). So far the Salted Carmel was by far the most scrumptious, however the key lime and snickerdoodle cupcakes were delish too. I was very impressed with the service. I am a last minute shopper with a 17year old's paintball birthday party in five days. He made a special request for strawberry cupcakes which wasn't on the menu of options at Sugar Lab (or any other cake shop's menu). I began my search and within minutes of my initial email to the Sugar Lab, Ali had sent me a positive response informing me that they will customize the cakes and included some ideas for the decor. They were affordable and very accommodating, even offering delivery (we picked them up). Because it was a paintball party with camo decor, they even made the cupcakes look camo from the inside out. My son loved it. The only thing I was concerned with is the texture of the cupcakes. They were slightly dry, and I do believe it was due to the camo food coloring they used, and it will not deter me from using them again in the future.
