There's clothing, decorations, foodstuffs, barrels of candy, toys, souvenirs... I spent so much time on the first floor I didn't even go down to the lower level so I have no idea what's even down there. I even bought some clothes -- what I will now refer to as my Pioneer Woman outfit -- totally not my style but so soft and comfortable. Bring the whole family -- the kids will enjoy the large toy and candy section -- and I didn't even look at the large Mast-branded jams, jellies and jarred food section because I wouldn't be able to fit them in my suitcase. Definitely make this a stop on your AVL trip.

Jackson's main floor, upstairs, is your typical boots/hats/dungaree selection that seems to cater towards locals looking for solid values, more than out-of-towners looking for fancy stuff. I mean, nobody comes to AVL to buy a Stetson, but some people round here like to wear them, and if you're one of those people, this is where you find that sort of stuff. That said, I took a Prada-wearing Italian politician to Jackson's one time, and she must have blown a thousand bucks on "authentic American" souvenirs to bring back to all her European friends. I started calling her "Spaghetti Western" after that. I thought that was pretty funny. Downstairs underneath the Jacksons retail salesfloor is a hidden basement with a working leather shop that makes stuff like the harnesses for carriages that take tourists around Central Park in NYC. Really high-end bespoke stuff. So yeah, maybe the desk clerk isn't all that chatty, but it seems disingenuous to say this shop isn't a local treasure, or to imply that they somehow aren't that good at the few things they do--things that are highly specialized, and hard to find anywhere else. That's my two cents, anyway: I think everyone should shop at Jacksons because they rock.

My kids were doing a bit of shopping and then ended up picking up a couple of items and I spent most of my time chatting with the one woman who worked there. They did enjoy some of the clothing but couldn't find items that they liked in their size but there were some really nice items in the counter that got their attention. They both checked out some really cool necklaces and we also looked at flasks and lighters. My youngest found a hat that they just loved and took a picture of the label on it with the idea that they would check it out online at a later date to see if they might buy one. Friendly employees who were very helpful and lots of good stuff. This one is definitely worth shopping in.

I picked up a pretty sweet tee and some cologne. It is a little pricey, but after checking online at what other stores offered, it's a fair price for quality items. Every item in the store had a unique look to it and fit the vintage inspired theme of the store. The staff was really friendly, the guy who ran the store took my email when I couldn't find the size of a tee shirt I wanted, and he offered to send me an e-mail when it was available, and ship it to me if I would like. He genuinely seemed interested in making sure I had a good experience at his store, and was not pushy at all. Overall it was a great store filled with Asheville charm.

This is the BEST vintage store I have ever been in, and I do a LOT of vintage shopping, from NY to FL. I was completely knocked out by H of K because: 1) They have larger sized women's clothing! Several dresses that were probably size 10-12 which is super rare since most vintage is size 2-4. 2) They have men's clothes - a lot of them. Most vintage stores have a lot of women's items and hardly any men's, but H of K is about 40% menswear. 3) EVERYTHING is in immaculate condition. The prices reflect this, but nothing I thought was out of reach since you're buying one of a kind, well made clothing. To be clear, this is vintage, not thrift. Some of the items are up to 100 years old, so you can't expect it's going to be $5. 4) Woman working there was so nice! Not pretentious, not pushy, not overbearing, but welcoming--and very sweet when I asked if I could take pictures for my review. 5) There is NO junk or random crap - it's obvious that someone has a keen eye for beautiful things and thoughtfully puts them together in collections. When we visited, there were selections of kimonos, smoking jackets, leather capes (!), summer dresses, etc. What's amazing is that it would be 8-20 of each "genre" so you have a pick of colors and sizes... it's not just one random cape or top hat. There's also home items sprinkled throughout, but in a way that is intentional and curated (like the wool camp blankets in the men's section, vintage quilts near a small section of kids' clothes, selection of aluminum thermoses by the outerwear). 6) I collect vintage women's hats and the selection at H of K is exquisite. Very fine examples of 40's/50's hats in absolute mint condition, and fairly priced. I went a bit bonkers taking pictures of everything - this shop is an absolute dream, and I wish I lived closer so I could visit every weekend. House of Kismet is an incredibly rare combination of incredible items and friendliness.
