my grandmother bought my boots for Christmas and they fit great, only problem is they had a issue where the seal between the sole and boot came together making a squeak every time I stepped on my right foot. the lady in front was sweet and the people in the leather shop were amazing. But whoever the round guy was with the white beard who didn't give me a name needs to find a new job. told me that after spending over $200 that there was nothing he could do except send them off. stand behind your products. as someone who owns horses, cattle and wears multiple pairs of boots... Came in store for boots. Was never greeted. Was never asked if we needed help. My husband went to a girl who was sitting halfway thru the boot section and asked if there was different sizes of one style she said no and kept eating her bag of chips and on her phone. The same girl walked by us twice as we were trying to fine something to fit as the selection for 11 1/2 was sparse. After trying on about 20 pair of boots, decided on a pair and as we were leaving we walked by 4 employees, again no one spoke. Went to counter to check out where the male, bulky in size and bald, was rude and was talking with another customer about if an order had came in. The man behind the counter said, well if I didn't call you they ain't here. Told us our price, we paid, he jerked the receipt out of machine, put it on top of the box and walked off. Very very rude. I will never be shopping at Jackson's Western Store Again. Here's why... I came by the store today to pick up some jeans for my brother ($120.00 worth of jeans, mind you.). While we were in the store, my one year old baby picks out a toy horse that cost $7.95. When I approached the register I remembered that my wallet was still in the car, so I stepped out to grab it. Hardly sooner than I'd gotten my foot out the door, a short blond haired lady that appeared to be in her 50s comes barreling out behind us YELLING "Ma'am! You can't leave the store with that horse." The horse that I'd forgotten my baby was holding in his hand. I calmly explained to her that I was just grabbing my wallet and that I was so sorry, and she says, "Well you can't leave the store with that horse!" And YANKS IT from my toddler's hand, turns around, and STORMS back in the store. I calmly go back in and pay for the jeans and the horse, leave, and call the store and ask to speak to a manager. Lo and behold, the manager is the gestapo from the sidewalk. Of course. She proceeding to tell me that, "Maybe next time he will know he can't leave a store without paying!" I reminded her that he is ONE. ONE YEARS OLD. And I let her know in no uncertain terms that I'd never be shopping there again, and informed her that that is an abominable way to treat a baby. One who happens to be clearly mixed race. If a little white cowboy to be would have walked out with his horsey and his unassuming mommy would she have yelled at him? We didn't run into any nasty woman like the previous reviews mentioned. Instead the customer service we received was 5 star! Our daughter was looking for her first pair of boots and I didn't really want to make a car payment at the store. The boot manager came right up to us and offered her help. To say she knows her stuff is an understatement! We were wowed by her knowledge, extremely grateful for her understanding of our budget and really impressed with how she paid attention to our daughters style and comfort preferences. I was excited to see this western store located close to the Sams Club that I just went to as I need Miss Me Jeans. I ran inside here and they did not carry any Miss Me Jeans. Bummer. What western store doesn't carry Miss Me Jeans? This one apparently. Went on to look at their size 9/10 cowboy woman's boots. Not alot to offer. Maybe 15 pairs. Ugh! We've been here a few times and purchased many hats, boots, belts etc. Love the items in the shop. All the employees have been helpful and kind except the nasty older lady at the register. Every time we go, she has a scowl on her face and when you ask her a question, it's like an inconvenience. Like we are wasting her time. Our recent trip and last, we bought 4 pairs of boots, a cowboy hat and some leather belts (we are a large family). My oldest son was standing by her and heard her say to another employee at the register, Just buy your shoes and get the hell out. Clearly not a fan of kids (who we were buying items for) and made an offhand comment about them in front of us while checking out. Masks? Gloves? Signs reminding customers to stay 6 feet apart? Not here, folks; not at Jackson's. It's such a shame, too, for they've done some long-lasting, fine leatherwork for me over the years and I came in wanting to have a lot more done. Not now, though. Not after they showed how little they care for their customers' lives. Putting on a mask is such little thing to do, but you won't find masks on anyone at Jackson's if you go in there any time soon. When I asked the leather worker approaching me to please put on his mask, he said, "I don't wear one." When I asked why not, he said, "I'm not sick." (Where does one even begin?) "Surely you realize," " I said, backng closer to the exit, "that you might be shedding virus without having any symptoms." "Well, " he shrugged, "there's a lotta different opinions about that." There was nothing more to say. Once upstairs, I asked an unmasked employee if I might see the manager. Turns out, he WAS the manager. I asked why HE wasn't wearing a mask. He spoke of breathing problems. I explained why I would not be back. He shrugged I left. Nobody was rude; they were perfectly polite. The pity of it is that 15 years ago, when I first started bringing in things for repair, they made clear in large and small ways that they wanted their customers to be happy with their purchases and/or repairs. Went in here to find a fly mask for my horse that I've had for 12 years. They didn't have the kind I was looking for (I have reasons for wanting a very specific style). When I inquired about it I was shocked at the condescending tone of the sales clerk who basically talked to me like I was an idiot. Went to tractor supply and found what I was looking for and with no judgement. Will definitely not be returning. Don't appreciate know it all horse people. I had an exceptionally positive experience at the leather shop downstairs. I had a favorite handbag on which the handles had begun to fray. I took it to a local shoe repair shop, as I could think of no better place to try. The owner said he could do it, but after going back, and calling back, after three weeks I gave up and picked up the purse. I then went straight to Jackson's repair, left the bag, and got a call before I got home, telling me that the job was done. I turned around and picked it up, and was very pleased with the repair. The employee said that she did it right away because she knew I wouldn't want to be without my bag. It is a huge shop and they do all kinds of leather work, from saddles, to holsters and, apparently, handbags. Thanks. read more

Wow, I'm frankly surprised not to see this yelp thread busting at the seams with 4-star and 5-star reviews from happy customers. Jackson's is seriously solid, and I'm a fan. Jackson's main floor, upstairs, is your typical boots/hats/dungaree selection that seems to cater towards locals looking for solid values, more than out-of-towners looking for fancy stuff. I mean, nobody comes to AVL to buy a Stetson, but some people round here like to wear them, and if you're one of those people, this is where you find that sort of stuff. That said, I took a Prada-wearing Italian politician to Jackson's one time, and she must have blown a thousand bucks on "authentic American" souvenirs to bring back to all her European friends. I started calling her "Spaghetti Western" after that. I thought that was pretty funny. Downstairs underneath the Jacksons retail salesfloor is a hidden basement with a working leather shop that makes stuff like the harnesses for carriages that take tourists around Central Park in NYC. Really high-end bespoke stuff. So yeah, maybe the desk clerk isn't all that chatty, but it seems disingenuous to say this shop isn't a local treasure, or to imply that they somehow aren't that good at the few things they do--things that are highly specialized, and hard to find anywhere else. That's my two cents, anyway: I think everyone should shop at Jacksons because they rock. read more

I went to Jackson Western store to buy a pair of boots, but they didn't have the ones I wanted in my size. The salesperson offered to order them and I agreed. She told me it would take two weeks. Not wanting to wait two weeks for my order, I went to Work Boots & More in Waynesville the next day. Tney had the same boots in my size! So I purchesed them there for $147.66. When I looked at my receipt from Jackson Western Wear, I noticed I was charged $178.64 for the same boots. ($28.95 more) I immediately phoned Jackson and cancelled the order and was advised that I would receive a full refund to my credit card. (It hadn't even been 24 hours.) A week went by and I received a refund but for only $160.64. I called Jackson' Western Store and they told me the $18.00 dollar difference was for a restocking charge. What did they restock? I had cancelled the order in less than 24 hrs. There was no product and I was originally told I would receive a complete refund since there was no product involved. If you have money to burn then shop at Jackson Western store. If not shop around or go to Work Boots and More in Waynesville. Not only did I save $28.95 on the same boots, they even gave me a free pair of socks. read more

I came in to Jackson's Western store after a recommendation from an employee from Foam and Fabric Outlet told me they had a good selection leather craft working supplies. This is a very cool family owned store with a great selection of quality western wear. Although I'm not a horse person it looks like they have a great selection of tack for the horse lover. I can't say enough about the staff. They are truly customer focused and made my experience an enjoyable one. In the leather shop downstairs Robert well exceeded my expectations in explaining the different fasteners and their strengths and weaknesses to me as I am new to the hobby. He spent his valuable time with me like I was an old friend. It is the kind of store that'll I'll stop in when I'm in the area even if I don't need anything particular just to look for something to further develop my knowledge in leather work. I was really worried about shopping here after reading some of the very negative reviews. But I actually had a great experience! They allowed my brother to bring in his little Aussie puppy and carry her around no problem. When looking at boots and trying to find a good pair to get dirty, we found one that wasn't marked. The woman walking around through the boot section helped us out and made up a price that was actually very reasonable. Unfortunately they didn't fit. The girl in the tack section was absolutely AMAZING! She helped me figure out what size a halter out of the used tack section was and gave me lots of tips and advise on different halters for different types of training, leading, and hauling. Forward: this review pertains to the custom leather shop, not the retail store. My only experience with the retail store was brief after the lady at the counter seemed annoyed when I asked if they would be receiving additional sizes of one of the hats that they had in the store....she reluctantly took my information and said that they would call me, it's been nearly 10 months, still no call. I doubt Stetson is shipping hats in from China....by rowboat. To start, about two years ago I decided to surprise my father-in-law with a custom leather holster for father's day. I took him in approximately 1 month prior to father's day so that he could give them the specifications for his holster and they could begin work. As with everything in the leather shop, we were given a confirmation ticket and told that the 1 month timeframe would be met without fail. Fast forward to one week before father's day, we had not heard that the holster was ready so started calling them to check on status...turns out, they had lost the order and we ended up not getting the holster until almost 2 weeks after father's day. Albeit, they did give us a discount and were pleasant to deal with - so we let it go. This should have been my warning of how things worked here, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since they did try to make it right. Last Christmas, my wife surprised me with a custom holster from Jackson's. We went in approximately 3 weeks before Christmas, I gave them the basic specifications of what I wanted and, once again, I was told that the timeframe was acceptable and that we should have no problem having it by Christmas. About one week before Christmas, we had not heard anything from them so I decided to follow up...turns out, they had not even started the order yet, but the worker said that it shouldn't be a problem to complete by the end of that week so final adjustments could be made. To make a long story short here, the quality of workmanship on this holster was sub-par in comparison to what was made for my father-in-law just one year prior; it needed several rounds of adjustments and I can still safely say that it is not exactly correct. MY father-in-law and I had to make several major adjustments to it after it was supposedly correct, and it seems like it was just slapped together at the last minute with some spare leather that they had lying around. Still, I have managed to make the holster work, although for the nearly $200 spent on it (this was the same price quoted for my father-in-law's holster before we received a discount for them losing the order), I expected much higher quality and I shouldn't have had to do anything to it except adjust the position, size, etc. My last, and final, experience came a few days ago. I have been in the market for a custom leather wallet as it seems that the store bought ones fail on me after about a year...I wanted something that would last a lifetime (or at least more than a year)...cost was not an object. I wanted a fairly simple wallet - a billfold with several pockets for credit cards (something that I thought was standard nowadays). Point blank, I was told that this was "too complicated with all of those fancy pockets" and basically they could not charge me for the amount of time that it would take to make...not even asking me what my budget would be for the project in the first place. I was referred to the retail shop upstairs to look at the wallets that were, I'm sure, made somewhere well outside of Asheville. I find it difficult to understand why you would call yourself a custom leather shop and not even be able to make something as simple as a men's billfold wallet - people trust this shop with thousands of dollars worth of saddles? Those aren't "too complicated"? My family and I try to support local businesses as much as possible, but in this case I have gone to looking well outside of Asheville for this need. With the spotty quality (whoever made my father-in-law's holster did an excellent job, mine....not so much), inconsistent customer service, and the fact that their order system is apparently a hot mess...I don't have any problem in taking my business elsewhere. read more

I purchased a hat from Jacksons Western Stores two months ago as a gift for a friend. I read the policy of the company before the purchase; it claimed that the delivery would take one month so I waited patiently. Once a month had passed, I checked to see if the hat was out for delivery. I called this business on several different occassions before a man answered, but with a horrible attitude. He left me waiting at least 10 minutes on the line only to inform me that the hat wasn´t ready yet. I called once again two weeks later - this being two months since the initial purchase. The same man with a bad attitude left me waiting 10 minutes once again to tell me that I should not be expecting delivery as they could not produce the hat which I had ordered two full months previously. At no time did any person associated with Jachsons Western Stores contact me to inform me of any difficulties with production or delivery of the product that I had purchased. I am certain that if I had not been persistant in my attempts to reach a representative via telephone, I would still be waiting for this hat to arrive. If you are thinking of purchasing any product from Jacksons Western Stores, forget it. Their client care and customer service is nonexistent - much like the custom hat that I ordered. read more

Went in to buy a piece of tack for my daughter's birthday. They didn't have what I wanted in the store. Said they'd order it for me. Turned out not to be what she needed. Had receipt, went back to the store only to be told too bad, we don't take returns on "special orders". I was not informed of this policy when they took the order, nor is there any returns policy posted at the register, and there is nothing on the receipt. I was born and raised in Asheville, but now I live in Texas. Recently, I decided to buy a new cowboy hat. The one that I wanted was not available anywhere locally so I knew that I was going to have to place an online order. Even though my past experiences with Jackson's had not been good, I decided to support them over some company I knew nothing about. Every time I have been in that store, I have found that the majority of the employees in there (except the commissioned ones of course) are incredibly rude, dismissive, and uninterested in helping their customers. As I should have expected, the exact same was true of my online experience. Never in my life, have I ever had a more miserable experience buying something online. These people will not communicate with you on the phone, in fact, they always acted incredibly irritated when I would call to check on my order. Every time I call, I am advised that I need to speak to "Mr. Jackson" who is NEVER there apparently. I'm also told that I will receive a call back from him when he IS there, but I only get useless emails instead. The crotchety old woman that answers the phone is the most hateful and rude person ever and she does not hesitate to raise her voice at you once she hears that you're even remotely displeased. She literally yelled at me TWICE which ultimately resulted in me hurling some choice words and hanging up on her. If I could give Jackson's a negative star review, I would do so ten times over. These people need some competition. They really have none and that is exactly what allows them to get away with being such jerks. A nice big beautiful Cavendars set up nearby would sink their business like the titanic, just like they deserve. read more

We got almost no help at all except for a different lady on the floor. Poor customer service and rude employees. I went there today for the first time, and purchased a really good pair of western boots and some decent boot cut jeans. The sales gals were great and knew the stock well. I only had to try on two pair of boots and decided to buy the second. While I was shopping, I saw the interactions between them and several other customers, everybody was being treated well. They made me feel very satisfied with my purchases. I'll go back again, I'm sure. Maybe some of the bad reviewers need to smile more, and treat people like they would like to be treated. I've been to a lot of western stores, and the selection here seemed lackluster (we went looking for fancy snap shirts, which my husband favors as stage-wear for performances with his band). The staff was not rude or anything . . . they just didn't seem friendly or interested in helping too much. Pricewise, things were about what I expected. Additionally (and I don't know that this is the store's fault), the place was just about impossible to navigate to. We tried two different GPS systems (Garmin and GoogleMaps on iPhone) and neither got us there--so if you go and are not familiar with the area, you might want to consult a real MAP. read more

My wife and I came into the store to shop for some western boots for me and here's why we won't be going back to Jackson's Western Store. We arrived at about 1:15 and spent about 45 minutes in the store with me trying on a number of boots. At no time did anyone working in the store ask if I had any questions or if I needed any help. In fact, nobody even spoke to us. Actually, the whole experience was unsatisfactory since we found many of the boots to be mismatched in size, without prices, and in the wrong size section to begin with. During most of the time we spent in the store looking for the best boots for me, the store staff were in the office near the boot department discussing personal matters. After a half hour of frustration, we decided to leave without buying any boots but stopped on our way out at a display of men's slippers because I need a pair of those, too. During the next ten minutes, a young male store employee stood at the front door counter facing our direction working on his laptop about 25 feet from us but did not acknowledge our existence. BTW, at the same time we were in the store, there was another couple shopping (we two couples and one other woman were the only customers in the store at the time) who were also looking for boots. I did not see any staff people try to help them either as they moved around in the boot department looking for a pair for him. After looking at boots for quite a while, they seemed frustrated at being ignored as well and left the store just before us, also without making a purchase. After largely feeling invisible for almost an hour in the store, we left to shop elsewhere. Having owned my own business for many years and having shopped at many others, I am stumped at how store employees can ignore potential customers who would have spent around $200 plus for a nice pair of boots (and maybe bought other merchandise) if given a chance to do it by just the common courtesy one expects from the staff at a quick-stop gas station. Obviously, they need to do some customer service training. I sent Jackson's an email through their website citing my frustration at shopping at their store but received no response at all, another indication of their "don't care" customer service policy. I have been talking about getting cowboy boots now for quite sometime and so I decided that Asheville was a perfect place to find a great pair. The BF's sister knew the perfect place: Jackson's!!! We hit up Jackson's on Black Friday and a few people were there, but not overly crowded. The cowboy boot selection was absolutely out of control, there was just an endless amount of shoes! I was a little overwhelmed but I got to narrow things down once I had a little help. I finally found the perfect pair. LOVE the boots and everyone working in the store were nice and helpful. Took my big horn saddle to the repair shop in the basement. The man in the repair shop was very nice and very accommodating. Had to drag my heavy saddle downstairs with no help. He was done with the saddle in 10 minutes. Had to drag my saddle upstairs to pay for repair. I needed one other product and asked the clerk at the register where it was. She pointed. That was the extent of her help. I think it was the owner that was standing by the check out. So the old woman by the register and the owner by the register never even offered to hold the door for me on my way out. They just had a blank look on their faces as I left. Not even a thank you. The repair shop in the basement is great. Other than that, they suck. read more

If this store had friendlier, more helpful employees and better customer service I would shop there more often. I love nice boots and will spend quite a bit on them, but this store has a substandard returns policy and the employees are seemingly indifferent. Therefore, I've spent thousands ordering expensive boots online from Zappos - they have a great returns policy and excellent customer service. I would love to support local business, but I will not waste my time or money patronizing a business that doesn't seem to care for my business.
