When we arrived on Friday (Jan. 2, 2015) the receptionist informed us of some construction underway in part of our building - she immediately offered us an upgrade from our queen-sized, ocean-view room to a newly-renovated king room on the bay side. And while the move seemed like a no brainer, the suite was indeed "newly renovated", meaning fresh, wet paint on several of the bathroom walls and construction dust on the floor. (The latter was immediately addressed with a phone call to the front desk.) The huge room featured new gray tile floors, freshly white-washed walls with all new bathroom fixtures and new vanities. The headboard, dresser and mirror were obviously repurposed pieces, pitted with scratches and gouges, but nothing too distracting. The room included an iron and ironing board, hair dryer, a nicely-stocked mini fridge (no charges), a dual cup coffee maker, a 35" television and wifi.
We spent our entire visit on site, enjoying the rather small'ish beach and massive pool complex. The white sand beach is deep, but less than a few hundred feet wide - walking out for a dip in the water was less than comfortable, due to the coquina-like rock just below the thin layer of beach sand at the tide line. Once in the water, it was refreshing and calm. Lounge chairs were abundant and available at both the pool and beach, but for some odd reason, towels are only available "one per person" from the sundries office - so you couldn't pick up a towel for your spouse's chair, or extra towels for drying off. We remedied that by asking the pool boys to fetch us towels, when needed, and they were happy to do so. Speaking of the pool boys, they, and the pool/beach waitresses, were amazingly polite and attentive, popping by whenever our drinks were a bit low, offering up dining menus and bottled water. By the second day, we were on a first name basis with several of the staff members, including the swim-up bar host and the chefs working at the outdoor grill. Across the compound, we found all the staff members polite, gracious and helpful.
Access down to the pool and beach from the hotel was either by shuttle bus, which operated every 15 minutes during our stay, or by a gorgeous wooden walkway dubbed the "99 Steps".
Food and restaurant service was "budget cruise ship"-quality, at best. On our all-inclusive plan, we were offered three dining options at the main building; French, Italian American or Japanese steakhouse - no reservations were ever needed, and our longest wait for a party of six was less than five minutes. There were posted "dress codes" for all three (no bathing suits here, pants-only there....), but nothing appeared to be enforced.
Dining portions for dinner were small'ish to ample, but most everyone enjoyed multiple trips to the all-you-can-eat crab legs and antipasto bar. On the first night I had a lovely piece of perfectly-seared black grouper over couscous and topped with fresh mango chutney. The second night, I was given two rather tiny lamb chops -which I called "lolli-lamp'pops"- with a side of bland, steamed vegetables. Desserts were bulk-produced and included tiramisu, red velvet cake and (dry) bread pudding. The bread and bun offerings were always stale, and the butter pads always frozen, rock hard - one of my pet peeves for any restaurant.
At breakfast, we almost always had to wait for a table to be cleared, but the wait was always made pleasant by the Bloody Mary and mimosa bar at the front of the line. Service was rather slow at breakfast, and none of our meals ever came out hot. Food offerings were simple; tepid, tasteless oatmeal, eggs -including eggs Benedict- reheated pancakes, French toast and mealy, cold pre-packaged breakfast potatoes. There was always a small selection of fresh fruit available, as well as plain yogurt and, again, stale breads, including boxed muffins and pastries. I enjoyed the smoked salmon, capers and onions, a'la lox n' bagels-style on the last three mornings.
Even at the $450+ a day all-inclusive rate, I certainly felt as though I drank my share of liquor and wine - all of the pours were strong by the bartenders, and all the booze slingers knew their cocktail recipes. I'm a bit of a bourbon and whisky snob, so I was pleased to see they stocked Jack Daniels Black in the well, and offered several premium brands of vodka and rums, by request. We never paid an up-charge for "high end" booze, including after dinner liquors and dessert wines. Several of the dinner wines were very nice, and included one of my wife's favorite white wines. While I don't drink beer, our friends noted all the bars served plain Budweiser, Heineken, Coors Light and Corona.
While I don't have much experience with tropical locations or all-inclusive resorts, I thought our entire visit was pleasant and worthy of repeat, especially if we could score a slightly discounted price. All 30+ members of our party reportedly had a good time as well. read more
