Our neighbors had used JB successfully, and the city of Boston's historic-approval folks told us that, while they can't recommend any window contractors, they've had nothing but good experiences with JB. The whole process was quick, transparent, and professional. They had the windows made in Italy, and--after we gave them the exact shade of paint that our bedroom was painted in--they took care of the rest. It happened that, on the day when the installation was going to happen, we were going to be out of town, so we left them a key in a lockbox. They took care of everything. They sent us photos so that we could see what they'd done while we were gone. There was a bit of confusion: after they left, we noticed that we no longer had screens in our windows (which we'd obviously want during the summer). Without needing to say another word, they came by and spent the morning installing the screens. The windows are beautiful, and are a huge improvement over the rotted ones we had there before. Since our apartment faces onto a historic park, we needed city approvals before the installation could go ahead; they handled all of this for us. Full disclosure: to replace two historic windows, tear out the old ones, etc., we paid $12,755.55 (of which about $9000 was parts; the remainder was labor). It was a lot of money, but it was totally worth it. What I've discovered by working with multiple contractors from multiple trades is that you get what you pay for. You could probably find a cheaper contractor, but you're unlikely to find a better one. Specifically: if you're in the South End of Boston, JB works here all the time. They know the neighborhood and everyone loves them. So do we.

I cannot say enough great things about Joe and his team. From day one Joe was very professional,…read morepunctual and responsive. Windows were over 60 years old and had to be replaced asap! Joe explained the whole process from start to finish and also provided recommendations for external trim - game changer! His pricing was consistent if not a tad cheaper than six other quotes I got. His crew covered everything with plastic (Dexter vibes) to make sure furniture did not get damaged. They also cleaned every day before leaving, not just my unit but also neighbors windows and the street - wow! I could not recommend Boston Doors and Windows more! This was my first "big project" experience and I could not be happier! Thank you thank you thank you!

Joe was very responsive, showed up on time, explained everything he'd on both projects like a pro, and he also gave the best quote we received. Hiring him was easy, especially when we saw how positive all the reviews are on him here as well. Joe was in communication with us on what we needed to do, helped guide a novice in me on what type of lock sets to buy, arrived on time and completed the jobs even faster than I expected. The results are great, as seen in the "Before and After" picture included in this review. I can't recommend him enough and when we need any future window or door work we'll definitely go to him again.

It's now mid-November, and not only are the windows still not installed, but the installation date was just pushed again to mid-December--almost five months after signing. We specifically reviewed the timeline because we wanted this done before it gets cold. We have booked dog daycare which has to be rescheduled, it affects our schedules, plans, and will massively impact our work, which is WFH. The measuring process was chaotic. The person sent to measure always gave last-minute notice and had to come out multiple times because they kept miscounting the number of windows--always short by one. Communication throughout this process has been terrible. You have to constantly follow up for updates; Zen never reaches out proactively or takes ownership of delays. Every update comes only after you chase them. When we brought up these issues, the company's response was to blame the original sales rep, who is "no longer with them." Convenient excuse, but the timeline and promises were in writing. Zen has taken no accountability for the misinformation or poor service. Yes, they may be cheaper than competitors, but you truly get what you pay for--unreliable timelines, lack of professionalism, and customer service that's downright egregious. Buyer beware!
