    Subuary Subway

I frequent a lot of different Subways on a regular basis, due to the nature of the field of work I'm in. The Subway on Upper Union always seems to build a better sandwich. Maybe some of you feel this way, maybe you don't. But when I usually go in and order a foot-long sub, it usually turns out to be all veg and no meat...and that's with me ordering a roast beef sub sandwich. I'm talking about maybe getting 4-5 thinly sliced pieces to cover an entire 12" x 3.5" sub. I'm one to get all the veggies piled on, but I still want to be able to taste some meat. I can honestly say that the Subway on Upper Union will make you a roast beef sub with at least 8 slices of meat (the correct amount for a roast beef sub according to Subway's corporate website) and sometimes even more. Whenever I am there, the veggies are always fresh and so is the yogurt parfait I always get on the side with My sub. So for that, Salute you Union Street Subway. There cookies. For some this is important. Cookies at different Subways are largely inconsistent. Some are soft and chewy, others are hard and chunky. Some taste like they are a day old, while others have a weird salty play-doh after taste to them, that is really unpleasant. Subway on Union has the cookies on lock-down! They make them soft and chewy with a hint of cookie dough still left in the center. That's just how I like 'em. The staff is always friendly to me and they are quick to make my sandwich. I've never had to wait more than 6 minutes, and that's with a line out the door. You can find them located on the corner of Dean and Union Street, across from the McDonald's. They share a building with Union Beverage Center. Go there if you are looking for an inexpensive fresh sandwich. It's a great alternative to fast food like McDonald's, and because I'm on the road a lot, I try to eat fresh instead of fast.

Storefront looks like an old speakeasy entrance. This side faces Union, but the store is really on Dean Street.

After reading this food critics article -- "I Asked 6 Chefs…read morefor the Best Fast Food Fried Chicken, and This Classic Won by a Landslide" By Karla Walsh Allrecipes I headed to the closest Popeyes to pick up lunch for my 20 year old grandson and me. The article is based on critiquing nationally available fast food fried chicken. Six experts selected a winner, and it was Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen by a landslide. Here is their justification: "When it comes to fast food fried chicken, no one does it better than Popeyes. They've really nailed the salty, peppery, crispy coating, adored by this Southerner. Plus, Popeyes chicken is always juicy and tender, even the breast pieces, which are often dry at fast food places. The moistness they are talking about is likely due to the 12-hour marinade the brand boasts about on its website." Another Excerpt -- "Popeyes' crust really knocks it out of the park. It has the crispiest breading that's never soggy, greasy, or underseasoned." No wonder Popeyes came out on top during our team's taste test, too." At the drive thru, we picked up our order of Crispy Chicken with Louisiana Seasoning and Wings. Shortly after, we concluded that the fried chicken was even better than KFC and way better than Chick Fil A. We agreed with the experts who wrote the article. In addition, the bone in and boneless Wings from Popeyes were also excellent. And the Sauces! The Mardis Gras and the Sweet Heat dipping sauces were outstanding.

The service could definitely be improved. The only people who deserve any recognition are the cooks…read morein the back. They work so hard and it all gets missed because the front house service is that terrible. The ladies at the registers do not care if you have been standing there for more than five minutes before they acknowledge you and when they do they give the feeling as though you have bothered them. It really is sad because we have been going to this Popeyes for over 10 years but we stopped about 2 months back because of the terrible service. Mobile ordering is a sham here because they will say the order is fulfilled five minutes after placing said order but then you get there you have to wait another 30 minutes. When you do get your food, it is never correct. I have never reviewed another restaurant but I had to for this Popeyes because of how bad their service has gotten. All the credit for good food goes to the cooks in the back! Your cooks do an amazing job!

Meat & Company first and foremost takes me back to the Yelp Elite event which was so memorable for…read moreso many reasons. Yes, the food was delicious and plentiful, but connecting with Yelpers was one of the biggest highlights of that event. So, I know it's taken us long enough to come back but it was truly better late than never because they did not disappoint. It was within an hour of closing but the place was buzzing both with folks dining in and a constant stream of orders from online and in store. We settled on their brisket sando and three sides - pit beans, mac & cheese, potato salad. The brisket was tender and juicy, potato salad wholesome and egg-y, pit beans sweet and spicy, and m&c mac & cheesy. While they don't have French fries, they have homemade kettle chips which I'm generally not enthused about but the ones here had a softer finish and I rather enjoyed them. Oh, and an honourable mention is due to the comfy chairs which are extremely hard to come by in restaurants. One minor (but non-negligible) gripe was the rather long wait before we could place our orders because the staff right in front of us insisted on packing a big online order AND serving the folks picking them up drinks before we could put our orders in. I personally would have taken the order of someone in line especially since there was no one behind us, so that the kitchen staff can start filling our orders while the staff at the register can return to finishing packing the pickup order. We'll go back. It's cool to see a local family business going strong after two years, and I feel like whoever is behind the venture managed to create something extra ordinary.

My wife brought me here as a surprise night out, and we had a good time…read more The Good: - very tasty barbecue that they cook/smoke/roast on site. I had the brisket, the pulled pork, the baked beans, and the mac & cheese. The brisket was perfect and served with sauce on the side. Lots of great spices, tons of flavorful smoke, not too mushy, not too fatty. - The beans were phenomenal with tons of flavorful pork bits inside. I wish I could make them that good at home, but I don't access to the BBQ scraps that they have. The mac and cheese was dense and creamy, and the pasta was not at all overcooked. I really appreciated this. The Bad: - seating is limited, and it is quite likely during a busy time you will get your food before a table is open. Why do they limit the number of tables they have when there is space for more? That doesn't make sense. - the pulled pork was just meh. It tasted flat, the texture was pure mush, and the color was a bit odd. Frankly, I make it better at home. This reminded me of crockpot pulled pork with a bit more smoke flavor. It too was served sauce on the side. - when our food was served it was covered with complimentary red pickled onions. Yuck! Apparently they sometimes ask in advance but they might forget when busy. Thankfully, since they didn't ask and made the wrong assumption they were willing to remake my plate without onions. - no cheap drinks. No cheap anything really. Imported soda, exotic Fiji brand water, etc. Their prices are very high for some things. They make great food, but you might get hit with $25/person or more before the smoke settles. Was it worth it? For some stuff yes, and for other things no. We had a good time, and I know better what to focus my order on in the future. But to go at dinner time when there might not be a table to enjoy your food is a real bummer.
