Subuary Subway
Michael C.

I frequent a lot of different Subways on a regular basis, due to the nature of the field of work I'm in. The Subway on Upper Union always seems to build a better sandwich. Maybe some of you feel this way, maybe you don't. But when I usually go in and order a foot-long sub, it usually turns out to be all veg and no meat...and that's with me ordering a roast beef sub sandwich. I'm talking about maybe getting 4-5 thinly sliced pieces to cover an entire 12" x 3.5" sub. I'm one to get all the veggies piled on, but I still want to be able to taste some meat. I can honestly say that the Subway on Upper Union will make you a roast beef sub with at least 8 slices of meat (the correct amount for a roast beef sub according to Subway's corporate website) and sometimes even more. Whenever I am there, the veggies are always fresh and so is the yogurt parfait I always get on the side with My sub. So for that, Salute you Union Street Subway. There cookies. For some this is important. Cookies at different Subways are largely inconsistent. Some are soft and chewy, others are hard and chunky. Some taste like they are a day old, while others have a weird salty play-doh after taste to them, that is really unpleasant. Subway on Union has the cookies on lock-down! They make them soft and chewy with a hint of cookie dough still left in the center. That's just how I like 'em. The staff is always friendly to me and they are quick to make my sandwich. I've never had to wait more than 6 minutes, and that's with a line out the door. You can find them located on the corner of Dean and Union Street, across from the McDonald's. They share a building with Union Beverage Center. Go there if you are looking for an inexpensive fresh sandwich. It's a great alternative to fast food like McDonald's, and because I'm on the road a lot, I try to eat fresh instead of fast.

Storefront looks like an old speakeasy entrance. This side faces Union, but the store is really on Dean Street.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen - New Honey Lemon Pepper Wings

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen

After reading this food critics article -- "I Asked 6 Chefs…read morefor the Best Fast Food Fried Chicken, and This Classic Won by a Landslide" By Karla Walsh Allrecipes I headed to the closest Popeyes to pick up lunch for my 20 year old grandson and me. The article is based on critiquing nationally available fast food fried chicken. Six experts selected a winner, and it was Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen by a landslide. Here is their justification: "When it comes to fast food fried chicken, no one does it better than Popeyes. They've really nailed the salty, peppery, crispy coating, adored by this Southerner. Plus, Popeyes chicken is always juicy and tender, even the breast pieces, which are often dry at fast food places. The moistness they are talking about is likely due to the 12-hour marinade the brand boasts about on its website." Another Excerpt -- "Popeyes' crust really knocks it out of the park. It has the crispiest breading that's never soggy, greasy, or underseasoned." No wonder Popeyes came out on top during our team's taste test, too." At the drive thru, we picked up our order of Crispy Chicken with Louisiana Seasoning and Wings. Shortly after, we concluded that the fried chicken was even better than KFC and way better than Chick Fil A. We agreed with the experts who wrote the article. In addition, the bone in and boneless Wings from Popeyes were also excellent. And the Sauces! The Mardis Gras and the Sweet Heat dipping sauces were outstanding.

This store has a sign on the front door that it is locally owned by John and Kathy R. If you want…read moreto see the full last name of the owners, you can simply walk up and view it. In theory, the point of putting your name on a restaurant is an act of taking responsibility for what happens inside, and an indication of personal pride for the establishment. Surely if John and Kathy visited this restaurant recently, they wouldn't find it to be a reflection of themselves. Seeing the level of filth and decay I observed after walking in, I normally would have walked right out. But the reason I was at McDonald's in the first place was because I had skipped an earlier meal, and needed to get some food inside my belly, stat. I find that Egg McMuffin's are a reasonable emergency measure. The disrepair of the store wasn't just limited to things one could see in the dining room with the naked eye. I observed one of the cooks struggling with a malfunctioning burger seasoning tool, which required multiple attempts in order to get it to work. Why it took so long to get the food prepared remains a mystery. But it wasn't just my order, everyone was waiting and exasperated. Including the staff behind the counter. It felt like we were all in this together. There were some other things I observed while waiting for my food, which included massive grease and dust build up on hanging signage, water damage on ceiling tiles, a crusty garbage can compression stick in plain view of those entering the building, and debris all over the floor. But the thing that really got me was the dining room. Once I received my McMuffin it was hard to find a clean table in the mostly empty restaurant. And when I went to get a napkin to finish cleaning the mostly clean table I found, I came face to face with a ketchup pump that was thoroughly crusted over with old dried ketchup. I'll spare you the photo. I think it is safe to say this restaurant had not been well cleaned in a long, long time. That said, the Egg McMuffin itself was remarkably fine. I ate it standing up. Mostly because I wanted to touch as few surfaces in the dining room as possible. Hopefully, someone from McDonald's contacts John and Kathy, and invites them to visit their store to take a look around. Or maybe, better yet, sends someone from corporate for an unannounced visit. I can't imagine that a place that prides itself in the consistency of the guest experience would be happy about what they find.

We went the first time because it was one of those days, and our non-vegetarian kid was desperate to eat and we were in the neighborhood. So while he chowed down on the pork sandwich platter (which was, he reported, excellent, and I can tell you the aroma made my mouth water), we split one of each non-meat side available. Chips, Potato Salad, Mac and Cheese, the Japanese eggplant, and the Kimchi Coleslaw. (I think we passed on the beans because they had pork in them.) They were FABULOUS! I mean, I've had plenty of BBQ sides in my time, back when we were carnivores, and I've tried them all. I can think of maybe two or three others that were the equals here, but for a limited run of options, it was non-pareil. It kind of makes me wish they'd put their minds to a veggie sandwich, the name of the place notwithstanding. They do the maillard reaction proud. One tiny tip for the owners: "Reuben" is misspelled on your menu.
